Family Violence Appellate Project is the only organization in California dedicated to appealing cases on behalf of survivors of domestic violence. They represent clients in the California Courts of Appeal, submit amicus curiae briefs in cases of statewide importance, monitor unpublished cases daily and request publication of important domestic violence cases, provide training services and technical assistance to domestic violence attorneys and advocates, and assist pro per litigants. FVAP is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to join their small but exceptional and dynamic staff. The ideal candidate will bring significant domestic violence litigation and appellate experience to the service of their appellate clients and technical support recipients, and will be willing to pitch in wherever needed to support a start-up nonprofit. You will be joining a dynamic legal team consisting of our Executive Director, Legal Director, and Senior Attorney.
Skills & Abilities: A successful Staff Attorney has strong critical thinking, legal, analytical, writing, and supervisory skills and is able to perform professionally in a fast-paced environment. This will necessitate multi-tasking, prioritizing tasks, and changing focus when circumstances demand. You are able to communicate effectively with other members of the FVAP team, including law student clerks, law firm co-counsel, clients, and prospective clients. You are able to supervise and manage people at all levels, including law student clerks and senior law firm partners who act as our co-counsel. You are detail-oriented and capable of managing a full slate of cases and tracking and complying with dozens of litigation deadlines at once.
Classification: This position is exempt, full-time, and at-will.
Compensation: Starting salary is $50,000 – $60,000 depending on experience.
