This is an invitation to attend a free CLE event (3-4 credits pending) on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 on human trafficking at STU Law School.  On the panel this year: 2 judges, 2 representatives from Miami Dade County, 1 survivor, 1 film director, 1 non-profit, and 2 professors.

Conference will cover local, national and international developments including trafficking by ISIS, Boko Haram, and the Pope’s address on human trafficking earlier this year. Light breakfast at 8 am and registration at 8:30 am.

The Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair

The Equal Justice Works annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest public interest career fair in the country. The Conference and Career Fair provides access to job opportunities for law students; connects employers with talented attorneys and law students; and offers a multitude of skill-building and career advising sessions with experts from around the country.

The 2015 Conference and Career Fair will take place on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

Students will have until 6 p.m. EST on Monday, September 14th to register and apply for positions. For more information about the Conference and Career Fair, please access this link.

William H. Hastie Fellowship Program – Increasing the Diversity of the Law Teaching Profession

For over 40 years, the University of Wisconsin’s William H. Hastie Fellowship Program has provided an opportunity for lawyers of color to prepare for a career in law teaching. The Hastie Fellowship is customarily a two-year program, leading to an LL.M. degree. Candidates pursue a scholarly interest of their choice and are encouraged both to pursue publishable research for their thesis and to demonstrate a capacity to contribute as a scholar to legal studies. The University of Wisconsin established the Hastie Fellowship in 1973. It honors William H. Hastie (1904-1976), a lawyer, teacher, jurist, and civil rights advocate who championed the importance of high-quality legal education. University of Wisconsin Law School Professor James E. Jones, Jr., now professor emeritus, well-known as a leading expert in labor law and as the architect of several significant programs aimed at achieving greater racial equality in the work force, was a moving force in creating this program.

The Program:

The Hastie Fellowship Program encourages scholarship in the full range of law studies, including law as related to minorities. The strong Wisconsin tradition for studies of the law in action and for interdisciplinary work creates a particularly supportive atmosphere for those with these interests. Candidates are encouraged to take full advantage of long-established ties between the law faculty and faculty in other disciplines, and they will have easy access to the vast resources of the entire University. Each Hastie fellow, before beginning work, establishes a relationship with a faculty member who will serve as the fellow’s principal research advisor, guiding the fellow’s research project. Additional faculty are likely to assist as well. Highest priority is attached to the production of an LL.M. thesis that meets the requirements of the Graduate Committee of the Law School. Most fellows base one or more articles on the thesis. Ideally one article should be ready for submission prior to completion of the program.  The thesis work has proven of great value to Hastie Fellows in demonstrating scholarly ability to prospective employers. Another important aspect of the Hastie Fellowship Program is to help each fellow develop strong teaching skills. Throughout the Fellowship, fellows are teamed with teachers covering subjects of interest to the fellow. This allows the fellow to observe and assist in teaching. Whenever possible, in the final semester of the program, the Hastie fellow will have the opportunity to teach a course or seminar in an area of interest to the fellow. Fellows are encouraged to become involved in the life of the law school by attending colloquia, faculty meetings, and social gatherings; engaging with the many scholars and public officials who visit at the school each year; participating in student-sponsored activities; and simply joining in the oftentimes rich exchanges that occur over lunch or morning coffee. The Hastie fellow is treated more as a junior colleague than as a graduate student.

Fellowship Term:

The term and internal sequence of the Hastie program are designed to accommodate the need for intensive research and writing, participation in the hiring process of law schools, and gaining some teaching experience. Hastie fellows will be appointed for a term of usually two years. During the term of the appointment, fellows are required to be in residence in Madison and enrolled in the Law School, with a commitment to participating fully in the life of the law school. Applications for the program are solicited in the fall of each year. (Application information is given below.) The first year of the program is devoted primarily to work on the thesis. By the fall of the second year, it is expected that Hastie fellows will be sufficiently advanced in their research to enable them, as they seek law school faculty appointments, to submit their draft materials and make oral presentations based on their work. The final semester in residence focuses on providing, whenever possible, a teaching experience and finishing work on the thesis or publication derived from it.

Real Property, Probate Trust Law Section / Executive Council Meeting Schedule LEGISLATIVE UPDATE – Breakers July 29, 2015- August 1, 2015

This event is an excellent networking opportunity. Through continued involvement with the RPPTL section, you can make legal connections throughout the State of Florida.

The event is Thursday through Sunday.  The major events, however, take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Thursday (all day) and Friday (all day), each of the substantive committees meet to discuss current agenda items, proposed legislation, and new orders of business.  Committee meetings are relatively small, involving anywhere between 10 and 40 attorneys.

Thursday evening usually involves a cocktail hour with light appetizers.  It is generally well attended.  This cocktail hour, however, has a cost associated with it and requires registration.

Advance registrations allow us to plan for sufficient seating, food and beverages at each event. Please be considerate and register before July 22, 2015. The Registration fee of $5 per event is waived for early registrations received by July 22, 2015. Ifregistration and payment are not received by July 22, 2015, you may only register on-site. On-site registration is payable by check only and will incur a $25 late fee. On-site registration is subject to availability.

The Annual Justice Alto Adams Writing Competition

Attention all Florida Law School Students

The Friends of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library invite all students currently enrolled in an accredited Florida Law School to compete in the first Annual Justice Alto Adams Writing Competition.

Papers should be a scholarly endeavor and must have a legal theme on a topic of your choice. The papers will be judged on legal reasoning, the difficulty or novelty of the legal issue addressed, general standards expected of serious work, and include a reference to a recognized citation system as well as the Fla.R.App.Pro. Rule 9.800. The paper must be long enough to accommodate a well-treated topic but not exceed 5000 words. A student may submit a work that has been written as a school assignment but nothing that has been previously published.

Your papers should be double spaced and submitted electronically by email with the subject line “Justice Alto Adams Writing Competition 2015″ no later than September 15th, 2015. The winner will be awarded $500 and published in “Friendly Passages” magazine which is electronically circulated to most members of the Florida Bar.

The University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill is currently seeking a Director of Judicial Clerkships and Alternative Careers.

The Career Development Office at the University of North Carolina School of Law facilitates the career exploration and job search process for its students, recent graduates and alumni. Each Director is responsible for providing career advising to students and managing a portfolio of career planning and professional development programs, events and administrative processes. Directors report to the Assistant Dean for Career Development.

The Director of Judicial Clerkships and Alternative Careers provides counseling and programming designed to inform and assist law students and alumni interested in judicial clerkships and alternatives to traditional legal practice. Among other things, the incumbent directs the administrative processes involved in the production of letters of recommendation and other aspects of the clerkship application process for students and alumni. This position is full-time.

Educational Requirements:

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school OR an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline.

Qualifications & Experience:

  1. A minimum of two years of professional experience required, with preference given to former judicial clerks or those with significant experience advising students and alumni in a career development office
  2. Excellent writing, administrative, and interpersonal skills
  3. Familiarity with the judicial clerkship application process
  4. Familiarity with non-traditional legal career paths and opportunities
  5. Familiarity with North Carolina legal market
  6. Familiarity with the academic program at the UNC School of Law
