Although numerous LGBT rights organizations and advocates have declared ‘mission accomplished,’ Obergefell and marriage equality were not a panacea in the struggle for civil rights for LGBT people. The LGBT community must remain engaged and vigilant; the community still faces tremendous challenges in numerous areas of everyday life, not least including employment, family planning, transgender equality, religious exemptions to laws protecting LGBT people, and immigration to name just a few.

American University Washington College of Law’s Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law (Center), the American Society of International Law’s (ASIL) Lieber Society on the Law of Armed Conflict and the American Red Cross International Humanitarian Law team are pleased to announce the Sixth Annual International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Student Writing Competition. This competition aims to promote interest and enhance scholarship in international humanitarian law among students as well as deepen their understanding of this important area of international law.
The Competition seeks submissions of student-written academic papers on this year’s topic of “Refugee Protections under International Humanitarian Law,” focusing on the ways in which IHL intersects with refugee issues, such as status, how refugee protections are affected by issues of gender, race, class, and nationality, the impact of IHL on resettlement and statelessness, etc. Papers may be submitted by any student currently enrolled in a law degree program in the United States or abroad. The winning author will receive a complimentary one-year ASIL student membership and have the opportunity to have his or her abstract published in the renowned Human Rights Brief, AUWCL’s premier student-run publication with over 4,000 subscribers in over 130 countries, and with thousands of unique visitors to the website each month. The winner will also appear in a video presentation to be featured as part of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law’s Teaching International Humanitarian Law Initiative.
This Competition is part of a multi-pronged initiative to expand and support the teaching and study of IHL among both students and professors in which the Center, ASIL and the American Red Cross have been deeply involved. In 2007, the Center published a study with the International Committee of the Red Cross on Teaching International Humanitarian Law in US Law Schools. The study identified a growing need for resources to support and expand the teaching of IHL among law faculty, but also a desire to support the interest of students in learning about IHL. The IHL Student Writing Competition promotes and supports student interest and deepening scholarship in IHL by providing students with a tangible way to become more directly involved in the global discourse around IHL.

The Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship Fund is intended to provide an internship opportunity for first through third year law students of under-represented minority backgrounds (e.g. race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or socioeconomic background), who have an interest in practicing law in Sarasota County upon graduation, to obtain summer placement in private law firms and governmental agencies in Sarasota County. The Scholarship Application is open to those aforementioned law students enrolled in Florida law schools and those enrolled in out-of-state law schools, but who have or having had family, school, or community ties to Sarasota County and are interested in practicing law in Sarasota County.
The Diversity Scholarship aims to foster an employment and collegial relationship between the law student/s and the legal employer/s and consequently enhance the diversity of the Sarasota legal community. At the conclusion of the student’s summer employment, the law school where the student matriculates will receive scholarship funds of up to $5,000.00 per student, to be used by the student for his/her law degree. The Diversity Intern also earns wages from the Employer.
The SCBA Diversity Committee assigns an attorney mentor to each Diversity Scholarship Intern. Along with the Internship Employer, the SCBA mentor coordinates the activities promoting the Diversity Scholarship Intern’s professional development during the internship period. The Diversity Scholarship Intern and the Diversity Scholarship Employer will be welcomed and recognized, respectively, at a reception by the SCBA and representatives from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
To apply, students must submit the application form and enclose any additional required attachments. Completed applications must be in the Community Foundation office by July 1, 2016. Applications may be e-mailed in a single .PDF document by midnight on July 1, 2016 at this email address under the subject “Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship Application attached.” The original application is required to be returned to the Community Foundation via mail.
