The Just the Beginning Foundation (“JTBF”) “Share the Wealth Law Clerk Program”

The Just the Beginning Foundation (“JTBF”) is an organization dedicated to fostering racial diversity among law clerks serving in the federal and state judiciary.  The program offers opportunities for externships with federal judges, as well as interview opportunities with federal judges for post-graduate clerkships.

The JTBF Share the Wealth Law Clerk Program is a special opportunity to be considered for six federal district court clerkships in one interview.  The program is aimed at encouraging more minorities to apply for federal judicial clerkships. The participating judges accept and consider law clerk applicants of all backgrounds, and this opportunity is merely an effort in addition to, not in lieu of, traditional application channels.  If you are interested in being considered for a JTBF Share the Wealth Clerkship Program interview, your application must be received by September 7, 2011. For further information regarding the JTBF Externship and Share the Wealth Law Clerkship Programs, please visit the website.

These programs include the Fall On Campus Interview (“OCI”) Program, Resume Referral and Direct Contact Program, Fall Externship Program and Spring Externship Program. At different points throughout the summer and fall semester, students will have opportunities to apply for positions with a wide variety of employers participating in one or more of these programs.

Bidding is currently underway for the first phase of the Fall 2011 OCI Program and for the Fall Resume Referral and Direct Contact Program.  All returning students should have received detailed information about Fall Recruiting 2011 via email.  If you did not receive this information, please contact your CDO advisor or call the CDO at (305) 284-2668 and ask to speak to an advisor.

The 2011 Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program

The 2011 Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program will be held on August 19-20 in Covington, KY at the Embassy Suites Hotel. First held in 2005, the Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program is the region’s premier diversity law student recruiting program. The program provides the opportunity for second and third-year law students to interview with law firms and corporations in the Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana region. This format gives students and employers the opportunity to network and interview.

The Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program  was created as a result of the Gratz v. Bollinger and the Grutter v. Bollinger decisions, which declared that universities could no longer promote or favor one student group over another. This decision has been interpreted by law schools as prohibiting them from sponsoring minority recruitment programs as they have in the past.

Greenebaum Doll & McDonald recognized the need for such a program and began sponsoring the event in 2005 after the University of Cincinnati declared they were no longer able to support the Minority Access Program they held on an annual basis. As a result, the Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program was created to fill a void left by the Minority Access Program. This event connects employers with this highly sought after demographic.

“As a former participant in the University of Cincinnati’s Minority Access Program, Greenebaum recognized the need to continue such a worthy event,” stated Jeffrey A. McKenzie, former Tri-State Diversity Program Chair and Greenebaum Chairman and CEO. “The program is a wonderful opportunity for both employers and students.”

For more information contact Kim Spurlock at 502.587.3586 or email the organization.

Interested in project-based public interest fellowships, like those funded by Equal Justice Works and the Skadden Foundation?  NALP and the Washington Council of Lawyers are pleased to present “The Pathway to Postgraduate Public Interest Legal Fellowships” on Tuesday, July 14th, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Washington, DC offices of Akin Gump.

The event will double as a happy hour, offering networking opportunities and a chance for public-interest minded law students in the nation’s capital to meet like-minded peers.

The formal portion of the program will be led by a distinguished panel, the members of which all have extensive experience with the fellowship proposal process:

  • Patty Mullahy Fugere, Executive Director, Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless
  • Jennifer Tschirch, Senior Program Manager for Fellowships, Equal Justice Works

Check Out PSLawNet’s New Page: “Having Fun on the Cheap in Big Cities”

PSLawNet has a new “Having Fun on the Cheap in Big Cities page, which includes listings of free or cheap recreation options in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, LA, NYC, San Francisco and DC.  The page was inspired by Deb Ellis’s blog post about fun things to do for free (or cheaply) in NYC, and includes contributions from several Section members, as well as PSLawNet staffers.

The page is a “living document,” so if you have additions/suggestions, please email PSLawNet.  We hope this is a helpful resource for you to share and enjoy.

Interested in a Judicial Internship? Apply Now!

If you want to intern for a federal or state appellate court judge in the fall, now is the time to apply.  In order to assist you, the CDO has launched the first session of its 2011 Fall Recruiting Program, entitled “2011 Fall Recruiting (Judicial Internships Session Only) Direct Contact, Externship”.  This session includes information for all federal and state appellate court judges in South Florida. This new session includes judicial internship opportunities exclusively.

Judicial internships are also considered “direct contact employers” and thus you will not submit your application materials through Symplicity.  Rather, your materials must be sent via mail to the judges.  While the session will “expire” in the system on August 31st, applications are being reviewed by the judges on a rolling basis and you are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

To view the participating judges, log into Symplicity and select “OCI, Resume Referral, Direct Contact and Externship Program Schedules” from the top navigation bar.  From there, select the “2011 Fall Recruiting (Judicial Internships Session Only) Direct Contact, Externship” Session from the drop down menu.

Some of the judges currently accepting applications are Third District Court of Appeal Judge Frank A. Shepherd, Judge Adalberto Jordan and Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman of the Southern District of Florida.

If you have any questions, please contact Amy Perez, Director of Judicial Clerkships.

Last year’s event brought dozens of employers and students together to discuss and interview for legal job opportunities throughout the Southern Region and more than triple that level of participation is expected this year.

Students that are not selected for interviews are welcome to attend the Networking Reception for an opportunity to mix and mingle with distinguished members of the legal communities in an informal setting to gain insight and advice on how to enhance their legal employment pursuits.

Eligibility Requirements:

In order to participate in this year’s job fair, interested students must be (as of July 1, 2011):

  • classified as a 1L (rising 2L) or 2L (rising 3L) student, or a Spring 2010 graduate; and

SRBLSA Job Fair Registration Instruction:

STEP ONE: Confirm Your BLSA Member Status for the 2010-2011 School Term Today

Consult with the Executive Board of the BLSA Chapter at your law school to confirm that you are listed as a dues paid member for the 2010-2011 term. NBLSA’s Career Fair Team must verify your status as dues paid or you will be unable to register for the job fair.

STEP TWO: Register on the NBLSA Symplicity Web Site by July 8, 2011.

Please visit https://law-nblsa-csm.symplicity.com and register for a Symplicity account. If you have registered for a SRBLSA Job Fair in the past, you will still need to re-register in order to participate this year. Once NBLSA’s Career Fair Team has verified your eligibility, you will receive email confirmation of your official registration.

STEP THREE: Complete your Symplicity Job Fair Profile

Once you have received your confirmation message from NBSLA’s Career Fair Team, log back into Symplicity to confirm or edit your profile information and begin uploading your resume and other job related documents (cover letters, unofficial transcripts, writing samples, etc.)

STEP FOUR: Bid for Your Employers of Choice from July 9-15, 2011.

Log into your Symplicity account and complete the bidding process individually for each employer of interest. Employers will then be provided the resume and other required documents of each student that completed the bidding process for their organization. Employers will then pre-select students with whom they wish to interview for the first half of their interview schedule.

STEP FIVE: Review Your Interview Schedule on August 5, 2011.

Initial interview schedules are scheduled to be available by August 5, 2011. Each student will receive an email prompting them to view their interview schedule once it becomes available on Symplicity.

Students selected for interviews must send an email to Daphne Shaw, Job Fair Coordinator, to confirm their participation in the Job Fair by August 10, 2011. Failure to do so may subject you to CANCELLATION. Once confirmation received, cancellations will be allowed only under extreme emergencies.

Should you have any questions, please contact Daphne M. Shaw, SRBLSA Job Fair Coordinator.
