Fall Judicial Internship Program – Application Deadline is Today

Applications for the Fall Judicial Internship Program are due to the CDO today, Monday, August 30 at 5:00 p.m.  This is a great program for students who want to work this semester and would like to work with a judge and/or cannot work more than 10 hours a week.  Applications can be obtained from the CDO front desk.  This program is open to 2L and 3L students.

Mandatory Summer 2010 Externship Program Bootcamp II

The Summer 2010 Externship Program’s Mandatory Bootcamp II will take place at 12:30 p.m. in rooms 109 & 110

Mock Interview Program (Phase II)

Have interviews coming up?  Want to conduct a practice interview with an attorney and receive constructive feedback?  Then the Mock Interview Program is for you.  Sign ups for mock interviews began last week and the deadline to sign up is Monday, August 30 at 11:00 p.m.  There are still openings left so don’t miss this great opportunity to practice your interviewing skills!

Fall On Campus Interview (OCI) Program – Phase II//Session II Bidding

Bidding begins on Saturday for employers participating in Phase II//Session II of the Fall 2010 On Campus Interview (OCI) Program.  Bidding will take place on Symplicity.  An email will be sent later this week with more information about the bidding process.  Bidding will end on Sunday, September 12 at 11:00 p.m. EST.

The BPI Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellowship for a Public Interest Lawyer

Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI), a Chicago-based not-for-profit law and policy center, seeks a recent law or public policy graduate to serve as the Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellow for one year, renewable for a second, beginning in summer or fall 2011.

The Fellowship was created in 1999 to honor Alexander Polikoff, who served as BPI’s Executive Director for 29 years, and Dorothy Gautreaux, the public housing activist who gave her name to Polikoff’s most significant lawsuit.  Through the landmark Gautreaux lawsuit, Polikoff helped thousands of public housing residents live in non-segregated communities throughout Chicago and changed the face of federal public housing policy.  The Gautreaux precedent has inspired similar remedial housing programs across the country.

As a result of the diverse range of issues BPI’s work addresses and the complicated political dilemmas they present, work at BPI requires a variety of skills, creativity and a willingness to go beyond traditional legal remedies to bring about social change. In a typical day, a BPI attorney or policy analyst might do any of the following:

  • Negotiate the components of a site plan for a new mixed income community in a working group of public housing residents, community members, the developer, Chicago Housing Authority and City of Chicago staff
  • Interview teachers and administrators about policies and practices that challenge the development and long-term sustainability of innovative public schools
  • Conduct research for groundbreaking exclusionary zoning litigation to increase affordable housing
  • Draft a motion to allow for the construction of public housing within the context of a new mixed income community
  • Meet with municipal officials and state legislators to advocate for the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low- and moderate-income households

Office of the Solicitor General One Year Bristow Fellowship

The Office of the Solicitor General offers a one-year Bristow Fellowship for law school graduates to work closely with other lawyers in the Office on drafting briefs in opposition to petitions for certiorari filed in the Supreme Court of the Untied States and prepare recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding the authorization of government appeals in the lower courts.  The fellows also assist in the preparation of petitions and briefs in Supreme Court cases, work on special projects and hep the Solicitor General and other lawyers in the office prepare for oral arguments before the Supreme Court.  The Office generally hires four fellows each year and the fellowships will begin in August or September of 2011.

PSLawNet (Public Service Law Network) is an online clearinghouse for law students and lawyers to connect with public interest opportunities and information on public interest careers.  PSLawNet is a free resource for UM law students and alumni to search among thousands of public interest job opportunities and employer profiles.  In addition to its database, PSLawNet offers an online library of educational and career-building resources for those interested in pursuing a career in public service.  These resources are publicly available to all website visitors.

Daniel J. Curtin Jr. Fellowship for Land Use and Planning

First and second year law students are invited to apply for the Daniel J. Curtin Jr. Fellowship.

The Daniel J. Curtin Jr. Fellowship is a great opportunity for students to learn about the diverse legal issues that affect the planning profession and to work with the planners and legal professionals who are involved in these areas on a day-to-day basis.  The legal issues underlying the planning of our cities and communities are an important and essential component in the education and training of those who would become professional planners and land use practitioners. The purpose of the Fellowship Program is to foster increased interest in the study of land use planning and its interrelationship with the law at the advanced undergraduate, graduate, and law school levels.

The Program is open to third and fourth year undergraduate students, first and second year master’s degree students, and first and second year law students.  One fellowship with a stipend of $4,000.00 will be awarded.  The term of the fellowship is approximately ten months (the typical length of two semesters or three quarters).

Application package must be received by PLD no later than October 4, 2010.

Faculty Senate Legal Intern

Intern needed for fall semester to work with the University of Miami Faculty Senate.  3Ls are preferred but 2Ls will be  considered.   The intern will be supervised by Professor Richard Williamson and will require up to 10/hrs. per week.  Salary TBD.

The Faculty Senate is the vehicle by which the Faculty is authorized to share in planning and governance of the university.  Through its committees and as a deliberative and legislative body, the Senate plays an important role in dealing w/academic policies, new program and degree approvals, compensation and the annual budgets, reviews of chairs and deans, and countless other matters of collegial concern and interest.  It is also the vehicle for hearing faculty grievances regarding rank, salary and conditions of employment, as well as appeals on tenure decisions.

Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court (2L and 3L students)

Applications are now available for the Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court (Miami, FL).  The program places second and third year students in a direct working relationship with county and circuit judges in the Civil, Criminal, Juvenile, Family and Domestic Violence Divisions.

The schedule by which the law student will intern will be a matter to be determined between the student and judge.  However, a minimum of 5-10 hours per week is required.  Interns are not permitted to work with any law firm or other legal agency while participating in this program.  The Career Development Office is responsible for matching students and judges.  To every extent possible, the assignment will be based on students’ expressed areas of interest.

In order to apply for the program, you must submit a completed application, resume and short writing sample.  Applications are available at the reception desk in the Career Development Office,  Room A112.  You may submit your application materials in hard copy to the Career Development Office or electronically to Amy Perez of the CDO.
