NAACP Legal Fellowship Sponsor for Fall 2012

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Department is accepting applicants to sponsor for the 2012 Skadden Fellowship. A Fellow would work on a project focused on housing and economic justice litigation and advocacy.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. The NAACP Legal Department is responsible for the Association’s civil rights advocacy and internal/corporate matters. The Department’s work includes advocacy on issues of economic justice, education, environmental justice, housing, public accommodations, and voting.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to racial and economic justice. Applicants with a history of public interest advocacy and an interest in a variety of advocacy strategies to combat racial and economic injustices are preferred. The Legal Department is seeking a third year law student or recent graduate who will complete a judicial clerkship prior to the fall of 2012. A Fellow would work in the NAACP Legal Department at the national office inBaltimore, Maryland.

Florida Supreme Court and Third District Court of Appeal Hiring

The following Florida Supreme Court Justices are accepting applications for fall 2012 term clerks:  Chief Justice Canady, Justice Pariente, Justice Lewis, and Justice Polston. 

Although the Court’s website does not specify that these justices are hiring, they are accepting applications.   Contact information for the justices is listed on the Court’s website.      

In addition, Third District Court of Appeal Judge Angel Cortinas is accepting applications for a fall 2012 term clerk.  Although the position is not posted on the Court’s website, Judge Cortinas is accepting applications.   For the address visit the Court’s website.

Save The Date – The Judicial Appreciation Reception is Now on October 19th!

The new date for our Judicial Appreciation Reception is Wednesday, October 19th from 6:30 -8:30 pm.  The reception will take place at the Newman Alumni Center.  In attendance will be federal and state judges, current and former clerks, faculty members and law students.  It will be an opportunity for you to interact with the judges who hire our students as interns and law clerks.

PSLawNet Has Recent Updates to Its Online Resources

PSLawNet recently updated some of its public interest resources.

Here are some updates:

PSLawNet’s Public Interest Career Fairs page has been updated to reflect the latest about 2011-12 public interest career fairs around the country.

The 2011-12 Federal Legal Employment Opportunities Guide is available for free download on PSLawNet.  The Federal Guide is a distilled version of the much more robust content offerings on PSLawNet’s Federal Government Resources page.  The Federal Guide is very useful as a handout and general reference.

The Public Defender Handbook (authored by Section members Deb Ellis and Rachel Peckerman) is a great resource for students looking for internships and post-graduate positions. Contains FAQs about the hiring process with examples of hypothetical questions and simulations as well as a listing of major public defender offices with entry level hiring.

 

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program

Presidential Management Fellows Program (3L, LLM)

The 2011-2012 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program application season will open on September 15, 2011.  The PMF Program is the premier program for leadership development in the public sector. Its purpose is to attract outstanding men and women to the Federal service. Each year the program draws fellows from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who have a clear commitment to excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs.

The program provides a two-year federal government fellowship to individuals who have completed a graduate-level course of study at an accredited college or university.

The PMF Program is a passport to a unique and rewarding career experience with the Federal Government.  PMF assignments may involve public policy and administration, domestic or international issues, information technology, human resources, engineering, health and medical sciences, law, financial management, and many other fields in support of public service programs.

Deadline: The on-line application for the PMF Class of 2012 will open on Thursday, September 15, 2011 and close on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

Program:

The Honors Attorney Program is designed to provide outstanding recent law school graduates – including those who are serving as judicial clerks or in government fellowships – with the opportunity to gain public law experience after law school. As an Honors Attorney, you will immediately handle your own caseload and have the opportunity to work on  some of the most pressing issues facing the state.  Whether you  are interested in complex litigation, environmental law, criminal law, antitrust, consumer protection, protecting Oregon’s children, or constitutional issues, the Honors Attorney Program enables new attorneys to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a wide range of legal disciplines alongside more experienced attorneys.  As a member of DOJ, you will work with talented and dedicated attorneys and staff to represent the State ofOregon, its departments, agencies and institutions and, most importantly, its citizens.

Program Details:

The term of appointment is two years.  Honors Attorneys typically rotate from one division to another after their first year, enabling them to obtain a breadth of experience in diverse areas of the law and with colleagues from different divisions in the office.  Participants are eligible to apply for permanent positions with the department after completing their first year in the program.

Student Registration for the Equal Justice Works 2011 Conference and Career Fair is Now Open!

Equal Justice Works 2011 Conference and Career Fair is the largest public interest law career fair in the country. The Conference and Career Fair will take place on October 21-22, 2011, inWashington, D.C.  Students interested in a career in public interest law are highly encouraged to attend.

Students interested in attending the Equal Justice Works 2011 Conference and Career Fair must register on the JusticeWork! site even if only attending for a conference session or the Table Talk informal interview opportunities.  The student registration fee is $25 per student.  If a student decides not to attend, he/she will have until 5 p.m. EDT on October 6 to cancel his/her registration and receive a full refund. Cancellations after this time will not be refunded.

Please also note the following important conference and career fair dates: 

  • August 16-September 12, 5 p.m. EDT: Student and law school professional registration opens
  • September 14-October 6, 5 p.m. EDT:  Student registration only for those not seeking an interview (can attend conference workshops and Table Talk); Law school professional registration continues
