Information about the Fall Resume Referral/Direct Contact Program and Fall Externship Program

As part of Fall Recruiting 2012, the Career Development Office (“CDO”) administers its Resume Referral and Direct Contact program. The Resume Referral and Direct Contact program provides an opportunity for employers unable to visit campus to receive applications from Miami Law students. Bidding for employers participating in the Fall Resume Referral/Direct Contact Program and Fall Externship Program began on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 9 a.m. EST.

Firms participating in the Resume Referral program require students to provide all requested materials (resumes, transcripts, etc.) to the CDO by placing a bid on Symplicity. The CDO then forwards to employers the materials of interested students. The employers will contact selected applicants directly. Do not submit materials to Resume Referral employers on your own. Resume Referral employers will only review materials provided by the CDO.

Direct Contact employers elect to have students send their applications directly to them. However, all relevant information including hiring criteria, how to apply and submission deadlines will be available on Symplicity.

Throughout the fall recruitment period, there will be several Resume Referral and Direct Contact sessions that have their own deadlines, independent of the OCI session bidding deadlines. Each session will be labeled by its deadline. For your applications to Resume Referral employers to be submitted by the CDO, you must submit your bid by the session deadline. For your applications to Direct Contact employers to be considered by those employers, you must send your applications directly to the employers by the deadline provided on Symplicity. A complete list of the first set of employers participating in the Resume Referral and Direct Contact program should have been emailed to you. Please check the various sessions on occasion to ensure that you have not missed any new employers.

Please also note that opportunities for fall semester positions, including positions that qualify for the Fall Externship Program, will be posted on Symplicity and an email specifically addressing the Fall Externship Program will be sent to you in July. In the meantime, students interested in a fall judicial internship (which could qualify as an externship placement) should view the “2012 Fall Recruiting Handbook, Judicial Internship Only Session” for a full list of judges accepting applications. In most instances, judges are taking applications on a rolling basis and you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. If you have any questions about judicial opportunities, please email Amy Perez in the CDO.

Please continue to check the Symplicity program and your email account for Fall Recruiting updates, including participating employers. If you have any questions about Fall Recruiting 2012, please contact Nirva Pierre-Louis or your advisor. For more information about the Resume Referral and Direct Contact program, please view the following sections of the Fall Recruiting 2012 Handbook, available on Symplicity’s Document Library: General Information, Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.s) and Student Guide to Symplicity.

CDO advisors are available to review resumes throughout the summer and fall. Advisors review resumes in the order they are received so it is to your benefit not to wait until the last minute to submit your resume.

IV. Fall Recruiting and Beyond:

Fall Recruiting is just one of the many ways students obtain both summer and post-graduate positions. It is important that you think broadly about your interests and look into a variety of opportunities available. Many other opportunities also have early deadlines that coincide with the fall recruiting period such as job fairs, government, public interest and judicial opportunities. For more information on all opportunities, please review the appropriate sections of the Fall Recruiting 2012 Handbook. Also, for information on fall semester judicial internships or post graduate clerkships you may also contact Amy Perez, Director of Judicial Clerkships.

V. The CDO is Here to Help:

This summer is an excellent time to discuss your interests with your CDO advisor and to devise a job search plan that is right for you. The earlier you discuss your job search, the less likely you will miss out on important deadlines. The CDO is open daily this summer from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may schedule an in person or telephonic appointment with your advisor by calling (305) 284-2668 or emailing the CDO.

VI. What’s Next:

Starting soon, students will be able to bid on employers participating in Phase I of the Fall OCI program and in the Fall Resume Referral and Direct Contact Program.
