Welcome back to our returning students and welcome our new students to UM Law!

  • Fall 2017 Recruiting Program: The Fall 2017 Recruiting Program is under way at Miami Law.  This program connects students with employers recruiting second-year law students for summer 2018 positions and third-year and LL.M. students for post-graduate positions.  Among the components to the program are the Fall On Campus Interview Program and Fall Resume Referral and Direct Contact Program.  The Career Development Office will begin welcoming employers to campus as part of its OCI program in late August and interviews will continue through October.  Students interested in applying to participating employers should check their email, as all relevant information is communicated to students via the email address listed on Symplicity.
  • Mock Interview Program: Don’t miss the opportunity to practice your interviewing skills and receive immediate feedback. Local practitioners have agreed to participate in this program to make sure you are prepared for the fall recruiting season.

Attend a Webinar About The Attorney General’s Honors Program (HP) and Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP)

The webinar will be hosted by the Office of Attorney Recruitment and Management and will provide an opportunity for students to ask questions about the programs and the application.  The webinars will be brief and will be followed by a question and answer portion.

Please note that the HP and SLIP application opened on July 31, 2017 and will close on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 11:59 PM EST. Please review the application prior to the webinars and come prepared with questions.

This webinar is open to law students throughout the country. There are two sessions, either August 28th at 2:00 P.M. (EST) or August 31st at 11:30 A.M. (EST).

Peggy Browning Fund – National Law Students Worker’s Rights Conference

  • gain a greater understanding of, appreciation for and interest in the issues facing American workers;
  • supplement their labor and workers’ rights courses; and
  • network with fellow law students, top labor attorneys, professors, nonprofit practitioners and government officials.

LEESFIELD/AAJ SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsored by AAJ, and AAJ member Ira Leesfield, this scholarship awards $2,500 to a Law Student Member to subsidize attendance at AAJ’s Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. AAJ’s Annual Convention is a great opportunity for the scholarship recipient to network with top trial lawyers from around the country, attend CLE programs, and meet members of AAJ’s New Lawyer DIvision (NLD). This scholarship is available to first- and second-year AAJ Law Student Members.

2017 Cycle

The deadline for the 2017 AAJ Leesfield Scholarship has passed. The next scholarship cycle will open in February, 2018. 

Deadline is June 1, 2018.

Applications must include the following:

  • A resumé
  • A statement of financial need
  • A 500-word written request substantiating the applicant’s commitment to preserving the civil justice system.
  • Up to three (3) recommendations from a faculty adviser, trial advocacy professor, dean, AAJ member, or trial lawyer; and
  • A completed form verifying your student status. ​Download the form.

Every applicant must be an AAJ law student member (join here) and enrolled in an ABA accredited law school. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Join Squire Patton Boggs LLP for Attorney Parents Conversation

We all know attorneys work hard. Aside from having to keep our bosses, clients and judges happy, we also have to make our hours, bring in business, produce quality work products, stay involved in the community, etc. In addition, many of us have the added responsibilities – and joys – of being a parent and trying to keep our children happy and safe and the household running as smoothly as possible.

For those of you about to become a parent or thinking about becoming a parent, fears about how having a family will affect your professional career are undoubtedly on the back of your mind.

We are looking to start an informal group of friends and colleagues who get together regularly to talk about the difficulties we all face as parents or potential parents, and share ideas for solving those problems and addressing those issues.

There will be no formal agenda or speakers or mandatory obligations. If you are interested, simply join us for our first “Attorney Parents Conversation.” Bring your own lunch and struggles and we will brainstorm ideas and hopefully have a few laughs along the way.

Call for applications: 8th International Jacques Leroy Prize – Business and Human Rights

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA – International Association of Lawyers) invites law students to participate in the 8th International Jacques Leroy Prize – Business and Human Rights.

Students who wish to compete for this prize must submit a written paper (plea, study, commentary on a practical case) that deals with the theme: “natural resource exploitation and respect for human rights” to the UIA before July 31, 2017.

Upon winning the competition, the recipient of the Jacques Leroy Prize will be rewarded with free participation in the annual UIA Congress in Toronto (Canada) from October 27 to 31, 2017 including free travel costs and accommodation. The winner will also receive a cash prize of €1000 and enjoy free membership in the UIA for a year.

US DOJ Career Information Fair on July 13, 2017

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is hosting a Career Information Fair on Thursday, July 13, 2017, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. The event is open to a limited number of law students who are working in D.C. this summer.

The Career Information Fair is an opportunity for students interested in volunteer internships, the Honors Program (HP), or Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP) to learn more about the many offices and components in DOJ.  There is no interviewing at the fair.  Attendees are encouraged to visit with representatives from various DOJ components, learn about the interesting and unique work of each office, and ask specific questions about volunteer, HP, and SLIP positions.  The HP and SLIP applications open on July 31 and close on September 5, 2017.

In order to participate, students must RSVP via email by no later than Friday, June 23.  For security purposes, students must include the following information:
