Wednesday, October 17, 2018:

  • CDO Presents: Summer Opportunities in Criminal Prosecution– 12:30 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. – Room E265: The State Attorney’s Office for the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida will host an information session to discuss their summer 2019 law student internship program. Each summer, this office hires 1L and 2L students to assist prosecutors with their cases. This session will be very informative for those interested in potentially working in criminal law this summer. If you have questions, please contact Diane Quick in the CDO.

 

 

Miami Law is Hosting the US Maritime Law Association Fall 2018 Meeting on October 17 and 18!

Miami Law is hosting the US Maritime Law Association Fall 2018 meeting on October 17 and 18.  More than two hundred maritime lawyers from around the country are expected to visit our campus.  Please see more information about the event here.   

Interested JD and LLM students can participate in committee meetings.  In addition, there are a few spots for students interested in volunteering.   • CDO Presents: OCI Employer Information Session– 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – 4th Floor Law Campus Faculty Meeting Room: An employer participating in the Fall On Campus Interview Program (OCI) will be hosting an information session for interested students. If you have questions, please contact Diane Quick in the CDO.

The Mark T. Banner Scholarship

The Mark T. Banner Scholarship is part of The Richard Linn American Inn of Court’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers of high ethics, civility and professionalism, and especially those from diverse backgrounds.

The recipient of the scholarship receives $10,000 to be applied to their legal education.  This scholarship is available to law students who have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States and who will continue in that program through at least the Fall semester 2019.  Scholarship recipients are selected by the Mark T. Banner Scholarship review board based on the following criteria:

• Commitment to the pursuit of a career in intellectual property law.
• Commitment, qualities and actions toward ethics, civility and professionalism.
• Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school).
• Written and oral communication skills.
• Leadership qualities and community involvement.
• Member of a historically underrepresented group in IP law (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disability).

Applications need to be submitted by December 7, 2018.  The application is available on the Linn Inn of Court’s website.

The South Florida Chapter of the FBA in Hosting the Kickoff Event for its Sixth Annual Law Student Mentorship Program on Wednesday, October 24, 2018

The South Florida Chapter of the FBA invites you to the Kickoff Event for its Sixth Annual Law Student Mentorship Program! This event is open to all local law students, judicial law clerks, and practitioners. It is not limited to the participants in the program. Please join us for this excellent networking opportunity. Applications for the 2019 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Open October 6, 2018

The application for the 2019 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program opens October 6, 2018.  This program offers candidates a two-year paid fellowship with a participating Federal Agency.  Finalists appointed as PMFs are hired by Federal Agencies and engage in solving domestic and/or international issues in areas such as public administration, engineering, technology, science, criminal justice, health, privacy, cybersecurity, and financial management, to name a few. The PMF Program seeks eligible graduate students every year who want to make a difference through public service.

GWEN S. CHERRY BLACK WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION’S WESTERN LINE DANCE COMPETITTION ON OCTOBER 6TH 2018

The Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association hosts another Western Line Dance Showdown at Scandals Saloon on October 6, 2018. The western line dance venue, Scandals Saloon, has generously offered to host and provide a Western line – dance lesson! To add some spice, this lesson will culminate in a full dance competition, with a $100 cash prize being awarded to the best line-dancer!! There will also be a special prize awarded to the participant with the best cowboy/cowgirl look.

GSCBWLA’s mission is to address the legal, social, and economic  concerns of women lawyers, the Black community, and the community-at-large. Part of the proceeds of this fundraiser will go to the GSCBWLA LSGMI Fellowship. Help us support an earnest law student interning with the Legal Service of Greater Miami, Inc. during Summer 2018.

The Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies

The “Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies,” seeks to recognize and support the efforts of graduate and/or law students dedicated to improving the lives of workers, by awarding up to five $10,000 scholarships annually.

Michael spent 25 years, nearly his entire professional career, with the MLBPA working in support of the Players – past, present and future. Despite being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in August of 2012, Michael waged an inspiring battle against his disease as he continued to work on behalf of the Players right up to the time of his passing last November, at the age of 51.

To be eligible for an award, individuals must be graduate or law students enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada and must have a demonstrated interest in, and wish to make a career out of, working in the labor movement and on behalf of workers’ rights. To receive an award, eligible candidates must meet a combination of criteria identified below:

  • A strong academic record
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement
  • A strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers’ rights practitioner
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) scores or otherwise.

Scholarship applications are being accepted through Friday, November 30, 2018. Each student selected as a Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Up to five awards will be presented annually.
