CDO Summer Survey

The CDO is asking all returning students to complete its 2009 Summer Survey.  The survey asks you for information about your summer employer and how you obtained your position.  The data obtained from this survey will be provided to students for their own use in their summer job search.

Please feel free to complete as much of the survey as you are comfortable although the more information you share, the more useful the survey data will be to other students.  You may choose to remain completely anonymous by checking “no” to the question “Are you willing to be contacted by students about your summer experience.”

The CDO will compile the data received and will prepare a report that will be available to all students via the CDO Student Portal and your CDO advisor.  Again, for the report to be valuable to students, the CDO needs strong student feedback.  We appreciate your willingness to complete the survey.

You may pick up a copy of the survey in the CDO (Room A-112), from your advisor via email or from the CDO Student Portal.

Fall 2009 Judicial Internship Program

The Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court (Miami, FL) places second and third year University of Miami School of Law students in a direct working relationship with county and circuit judges in the Civil, Criminal, Juvenile, Family and Domestic Violence Divisions.

The schedule by which the law student will intern will be a matter to be determined between the student and judge.  However, a minimum of 5-10 hours per week is required.  Interns are not permitted to work with any law firm or other legal agency while participating in this program.  The Career Development Office is responsible for matching students and judges.  To every extent possible, the assignment will be based on students’ expressed areas of interest.

Yale Law Women’s Top Ten Family Friendly Firms List

The Yale Law Women annually prepare a Top Ten Family Friend Firms List.  Below is their 2009 report:

Yale Law Women (YLW) has announced its fourth annual Top Ten Family Friendly Firms List.  The 2009 Top Ten Firms, in alphabetical order, are:

  • Arnold & Porter
  • Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton
  • Covington & Burling
  • Jenner & Block
  • Katten Muchin Rosenman
  • Mayer Brown
  • Munger, Tolles & Olson
  • Patton Boggs
  • Sidley Austin
  • WilmerHale

“The Top Ten List, and any discussion of family friendly policies, is even more salient in this recession than in previous years,” said Yale Law Women Chair, Noorain Khan.  “We hope firms will take advantage of the current market shift to create new opportunities for flexible work arrangements and work-life balance.”

“We congratulate these Top Ten Firms, which are taking the lead in this area, especially in tough economic times,” said Lauren Gerber, Top Ten List Co-Chair.  “However, our survey demonstrated that a significant gender disparity remains in how family friendly policies are designed and used in practice.  Additionally, women continue to lag behind men in attaining partnership and leadership positions, indicating that firms still do not accommodate attorneys acting as primary caregivers.”

“We believe that the desire to maintain a challenging and engaging career while spending meaningful time with one’s family is and should be a gender neutral issue,” said Emily Oldshue, Top Ten List Co-Chair.  “As the legal profession, and large law firms in particular, strives to meet new expectations and economic imperatives, we hope to see firms taking steps to retain and engage the top talent they have spent such valuable resources to recruit and train.  The adoption and promotion of gender neutral leave and flex-time policies are an important component of this evolving vision.”

Selected statistics from the 2009 survey include the following:

  • On average, 16% of partners were women; of partners promoted in 2008, 23% were women
  • On average, women receive 15 weeks parental leave, compared to 6 weeks for men
  • 92% of mothers used the maximum parental leave offered, compared to 55% of fathers
  • 99% of requests for part-time work were granted
  • 7% of attorneys work part-time, on average, of whom 12% are partners, and 81% are women
  • 91% of firms make their part-time attorneys eligible for bonuses; 59% of part-time attorneys received bonuses in 2008, compared to 46% of full-time attorneys

Additional statistics, innovative practices, survey methodology, and a summary report can be found at www.yale.edu/ylw.

Lawyers for Literacy Law School Fellow Opportunity

Lawyers for Literacy Law School Fellow Opportunity 2009/2010

Lawyers for Literacy is a collaborative effort, in which local attorneys, judges, and law students provide civic and life skills education to underprivileged juveniles and young adults in Miami-Dade County, under the auspices of The Family Learning Partnership and led by United States District Judge Ursula Ungaro.

To date, Lawyers for Literacy has recruited over 100 volunteers from some of the most prominent law firms in Miami including: Greenberg Traurig; Kenny Nachwalter; Tew Cardenas; White and Case;  the US Attorney’s Office; and the Public Defenders office.

Classes:  Legal Up! Is a four-part, modular series of interactive workshops proposed by the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership designed to address these challenges in ways that interweave practical advice and legal information for youth. The first module provides an Overview of the Law and its importance in the lives of individuals and communities, a basic understanding of the law, and an individual’s rights and responsibilities within the law.

The second module deals with Housing and Landlord/Tenant Law.  Understanding of the law as it applies to landlord/ tenant relationships helps youth learn what will be necessary to find and maintain consistent and stable housing, which itself has a positive effect on educational achievement and employment .

The third module addresses Employment and The Law. The workshop on employment, in addition to providing practical advice on job-seeking, is designed to help participants understand the legal structure that governs their relationship with an employer and the protections afforded employees.

The Fourth module, which is critical to long-term financial stability, is Financial Literacy Education . This workshop, not only helps participants understand the law, and how it applies to consumers and financial transactions, but it aims to teach participants how to be fiscally responsible and how to establish and maintain credit.

Role of the Volunteer

  • Students will be required to teach a minimum of two modules (4 class hours) per month
  • Participate in a monthly lunch/learn session at the Federal Courthouse
  • Provide assistance with the Literacy Newsletter

All applicants should submit the completed package to umhope@law.miami.edu no later than August 25, 2009.  Applications are available in the HOPE office or by emailing cdo@law.miami.edu.

One outstanding student will be selected for an Internship with the Honorable Judge Ungaro.
