Each winner will be honored during the College’s annual black tie dinner on September 15, 2012 inBoston. They will receive a plaque and an employee benefits treatise published by BNA Books. If deemed suitable by the editors, one or more of the winning papers will be published by the BNA Pension and Benefits Reporter, the BNA Tax Management Compensation Planning Journal or another employee benefits publication. The winning papers will also be distributed to the Fellows of theAmericanCollegeof Employee Benefits Counsel, who are experienced attorneys that have made significant contributions to the advancement of the employee benefits field in a wide range of practice settings including law and consulting firms, universities, labor unions, advocacy organizations and government agencies throughout theUnited States.

Diversity Fellowship 2012 at Cooley LLP

The Diversity Committee is pleased to announce that the Firm, for the 5th year, is accepting applications for our Diversity Fellowship. The Diversity Fellowship is an initiative targeted to first year law students who demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity in their communities.

Recipients of the Fellowship receive a monetary award to assist with their law school tuition and will participate in the 2013 Summer Associate Program.  The press release announcing the Diversity Fellowship is posted on the website.

The George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship

Lane Powell PC has more than 135 years of commitment to the community. This commitment is reflected in Lane Powell’s hiring and promotion of women and individuals from diverse backgrounds. As part of this commitment to diversity, the firm has created the George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship. The George V. Powell Scholar will be a 2013 summer associate in the firm’s Seattle or Portland office and receive a $7,500.00 scholarship toward tuition and expenses during the student’s third year of law school.

Academic Requirements and Selection Criteria: 

The firm is seeking candidates who will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and who have a demonstrated desire to work, live, and eventually practice law in Seattle or Portland. The candidates’ academic achievements and record of leadership abilities, community service, and involvement in community issues will be taken into consideration. Candidates must be second year students in good standing at an ABA accredited law school. Candidates in four year joint degree programs will be considered after their third year.

Florida House of Representatives 2012-2013 Legislative Intern Program

Deadline for Applications: May 31, 2012

The Legislative Intern Program provides college students and graduate students with training in the legislative process and public policy making.

Participants are assigned to House committees and subcommittees, and on a limited basis, leadership offices. Under the guidance of senior House staff, assignments may include research, bill drafting and analysis, oversight activities, and other tasks relating to policy or fiscal areas.

Benefits: The rate of pay for participants is $13 per hour, along with payment of 18 hours of in-state tuition or monthly stipend.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a Florida resident or be enrolled in a Florida school at the time of application. Applicants must have received their bachelor’s degree prior to beginning the internship.

Georgia State University College of Law is hosting the 8th Annual Southeastern Intellectual Property Job Fair (SIPJF) on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Atlanta, Georgia. This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in intellectual property law. Students will be able to interview for positions in various areas of IP, including patent, trademark, trade secrets, and copyright law.

Opportunity With the International Human Rights Clinic at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia

There is a new collaborative project between Miami Law and an international human rights clinic located at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia. Since 2010, 4 students have already traveled over the summer and worked with issues of human rights and victimology.

The project, headed by Paula Arias, Lecturer in Law and Director of the International Moot Court Program, provides students the opportunity to learn about human rights and humanitarian law by doing legal research in the field and experiencing a different culture.

The Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law Seeks Outreach Coordinator for Anti-Torture Follow Up and Impact Initiative at AU/WCL Center for Human Rights

The Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law (Center) seeks a dynamic Outreach Coordinator with proven experience conducting human rights research and monitoring on the ground and managing innovative outreach. The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of the new Anti-Torture Follow-Up and Impact Initiative (FUII) with the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan Mendez (SRT), which will be run through the Center in collaboration with the SRT. The FUII is a two-year, grant-funded, independent project of the Center and is not a position of employment with or representing the United Nations.

The project goals are: (1) to create a replicable model for implementation of the recommendations of the SRT through a coordinated approach to follow-up and impact on the ground; and (2) to expand the impact of the SRT’s research, reports and recommendations on torture and CIDT through a professionalized outreach mechanism.

The Outreach Coordinator will expand strategies used by the SRT to support implementation of recommendations in-country, to monitor and assess implementation efforts, and to provide a model for effective in-country follow-up on SRT visits and recommendations. In addition, the Outreach Coordinator will support an outreach strategy-utilizing website development, social media, traditional media, blogging, and other tools-to raise the profile of the SRT’s work and recommendations. The Outreach Coordinator will be supervised by the Center Executive Director and will work in close collaboration with the SRT and other project staff.
