The Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship Application Now Available! 

Application deadline is June 21, 2013

Baker Donelson is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the individual differences among us are understood, respected, appreciated and recognized as sources of strength of the Firm. These qualities enrich the environment in which the Firm works. With this in mind, Baker Donelson will again award three scholarships to diverse law students who will complete their first year of law school by June 2013.

Recipients will be awarded a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position for the summer of 2014 in one of our following offices: Birmingham, AL; Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA; Jackson, MS; Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, TN; or Houston, TX.  Additionally, each recipient will be awarded $10,000 which will be paid prior to the student’s third year of law school to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses.

The ABA Section of International Law’s Africa Committee is Seeking Two Interns for the Committee’s Newsletter, Africa Law Today

The ABA Section of International Law’s Africa Committee is seeking two interns to work on the Committee’s quarterly newsletter, Africa Law Today, and to contribute to a variety of other research related tasks undertaken by the committee. The mission of the Committee is to interact with lawyers, academics, students and others with an interest in African legal affairs.

The Committee is comprised of nearly 400 practitioners in the public interest sector, private practice, academics and other fields. 

Description: 

The Africa Law Today student internship allows law students to have the opportunity to edit, proofread and cite check articles submitted to the Africa Committee for publication. The internship also allows the students to engage in meaningful research on a wide array of issues in conjunction with Committee Leadership. The students are exposed to work from experts and colleagues in areas ranging from human rights and AIDS policy research to the effects of international conventions and treaties on African business and development. The internship enables interns to become involved in the committee through monthly committee conference calls and provides a vast array of resources and networking opportunities pertaining to the legal communities throughout the African continent.

Work will be done remotely, though you must have access to the internet and email and involves approximately 25 hours per semester.

WALRAA’s Annual Summer in the Capital: A Fall Recruitment Preview for Law Students & Employers

The Diversity Committee of the Washington Area Legal Recruitment Administrators Association (WALRAA) is pleased to invite you to the second Annual Summer in the Capital: A Fall Recruitment Preview for Law Students & Employers on Monday, June 17, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Washington, 1150 22nd Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

At last year’s inaugural event, 40 employers participated and students from over 30 different law school schools were in attendance.  The purpose of this event is to bring together legal employers and rising second-year law students (with an expected graduation date of May 2015) who contribute to the diversity of the legal profession and are interested in practicing law in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.  This will be a great opportunity to network with a mix of representatives from firms, public interest organizations and government agencies and circulate resumes before the start of the fall recruitment season in an informal setting.  Each employer will have a table where they can speak with interested students about their firm and its culture.

Rising second-year students are encouraged to participate.  THERE IS NO FEE TO ATTEND — you are simply asked to RSVP by Monday, June 3rd by clicking hereA confirmation email, with detailed information, will be sent to all participants in advance of the event.

The 2013 Latham Watkins Diversity Scholars Program

Latham & Watkins is once again pleased to announce the Latham Diversity Scholars Program, which will award a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of six second-year law students. Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate’s:

  • Ability and commitment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms;
  • Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession;
  • Academic and/or leadership achievements; and
  • Desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

Students will be asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 3, 2013. Recipients will be announced in early 2014.

This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham. Rather, it is open to all law students in the hope that greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms will benefit the entire profession. The Latham Diversity Scholars Program, among other outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Subcommittee, enhances Latham’s efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys.

Attend the ABA Annual Meeting on August 8-12, 2013 in San Francisco

Law Student Division Activities: August 9-10, 2013
Early-Bird Registration Deadline: May 31, 2013

The ABA Annual Meeting is just around the corner. The early-bird registration of $50 ($75 for ABA non-member law students and includes a one-year membership in the ABA Law Student Division) will end on May 31. Beginning June 1, the student rate will increase to $75 ($100 for ABA non-member law students). Be sure to register for the Annual Meeting at the early-bird rate. Remember, your registration fee includes an “all access to CLE” student badge giving you complimentary access to most educational events sponsored by the ABA’s various practice specific entities.

ABA Law Student Division 2013-2014 National Leadership Opportunities

Submit Your Nomination for Division Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates or Vice Chair-SBA!

Deadline for Receipt: 11:59pm on June 1, 2013.

The ABA Law Student Division offers unique opportunities for law students to serve as leaders in the ABA while they are still in law school. These positions provide excellent resume-builders for students who receive hands-on experience working with practicing attorneys.

Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates:

The Law Student Division elects three Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates (the ABA’s governing body) to serve a one-year term. In short, these delegates are responsible for:

  • Representing the Division in the ABA House of Delegates and advocating Division positions to other ABA entities;
  • Advocating ABA House of Delegates adoption of Division resolutions, co-sponsored resolutions, and resolutions directly      affecting law students and legal education;
  • Serving as the primary contact and coordinators to the 65+ Law Student Division liaisons to other ABA entities; and
  • Working with Division and other ABA leaders to promote, advocate and lobby for law student and legal education legislation.

Vice Chair-Student Bar Associations:

Student Bar Associations serve as an essential link between the Division and law students around the country. SBA Presidents bring the concerns and issues of their students from a regional level to the ABA national level. The Vice Chair-SBA serves as the voice and representative of SBAs on a national level. Serving a one-year term, the Vice Chair-SBA is responsible for:

  • Strengthening relationships between Student Bar Associations and the ABA;
  • Facilitating discussions on legal education, law school, and law student issues among SBA Presidents;
  • Representing the interests of student bar associations and assisting these organization leaders in drafting/filing policy recommendations; and
  • Maintaining and developing resources and materials for the Division’s SBA webpage, handbook, conferences and law school chapters.

The Center for Professional and Leadership Development at the UW School of Law has an important mission in preparing law students for their professional transition in becoming lawyers and leaders in a variety of careers. The Assistant Director is responsible for the following: a leadership-focused career coaching program for students and alumni, development of job search skills and strategies, creation and coordination of career related workshops

Responsibilities:

Career Advising:

  • Provides career counseling and mentoring to students and alumni.
  • Coordinates  participation in job fairs, speaker series, and other programs designed to  provide information about legal careers.
  • Reviews cover letters and resumes.
  • Advises students regarding concentration tracks suited to their interests.
  • Collaborates with Center for Public Service Law on programming offerings relating to career opportunities.
  • Assists law school Admissions Office by advising prospective students about  legal careers.
  • Develops working relationships with various student groups and the Law School’s  Student Bar Association guidance for student organizations.

Programming:

  • Develop and manage a variety of programs relating to cultivating career opportunities and leadership. This includes building relationships with potential speakers, doing public promotion, scheduling, reserving rooms, arranging security, and hospitality.

Reporting & Resource administration for Center for Professional and Leadership Development:

  • Maintain detailed statistical information, on employment outcomes for JD students and recent graduates.
  • Develop in coordination with the Assistant Dean, processes, reports, and programs that track employment outcomes.
  • Acquire or develop resources appropriate for JD students, clerkship applicants and alumni, including: directories, and/or databases of law firms, attorneys and alumni/ae practicing in areas related to the graduate programs and clerkships.

Community engagement and outreach:

  • Fosters relationships with legal community.
  • Participates in local bar and attends bar events and meetings as needed.
  • Fosters relationships with faculty and staff at the law school and across campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • A JD and a minimum of three years of legal experience in· any of the following: law firm, public agency, non-profit organization, educational institution or equivalent.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.·
  • Sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse· communities.
  • Requires strong computer skills including working with MS· Office and database management programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.·
  • Ability to work independently and professionally under the· pressure of frequent deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

  • Familiarity with the legal job market.·
  • Previous experience in career coaching, marketing,· workshop planning or higher education administration.
  • Understanding of student advising.·
  • International or volunteer· work experience.

Join the Miami Worship Choir in “Night of SOL, Sharing One Love” on May 19th– A Concert Benefitting the LoF Center for Survivors of Human Trafficking in South Florida

On May 19th, join the Miami Worship Choir in  “Night of SOL, Sharing One Love” – a concert benefitting the LoF Center for Survivors of Human Trafficking in South Florida. This is a unique and worthwhile event. Every dollar from ticket sales will be donated to the Life of Freedom Center, a Miami facility that offers support and restorative programs for female survivors of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

The event starts at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19th at the Lewis Family Auditorium at Ransom Everglades located at 3575 Main Highway, Coconut Grove.

A number of judges and attorneys from the South Florida legal community will be in attendance. The following individuals will also be there:

Special Guest Host: Diana Diaz: The co-anchor of Today in Florida was born in Nicaragua and grew up in Miami. She is the winner of the ”Best Newscast Award” from the Community Broadcasters Association. Diana feels blessed to live in her hometown and be able to give back to the community.  She donates her time to several local charities.
