The Florida Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association (“FL NELA”) is seeking up to three (3) Summer Advocacy Fellows for Summer 2014.
FL NELA’s mission is to advance employee rights and serve lawyers who advocate for equality and justice in the workplace. FL NELA is part of the country’s largest professional organization that is exclusively comprised of lawyers who represent individual employees in cases involving employment discrimination, employee benefits, illegal workplace harassment and retaliation, as well as other employment related matters. FL NELA pursues its mission through education, amicus curie briefs, technical support, and other activities.
Description of Position:
The Summer Advocacy Fellow will be based in a FL NELA member’s firm located in either the Middle District, Northern District, or Southern District of Florida, and will report to and be under the general supervision of that firm’s managing partner. The Fellow will use his/her independent judgment, initiative and creativity in managing and prioritizing his/her workload.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have completed at least one year of law school. They should possess excellent research and writing skills and have a demonstrated commitment to workers’ rights or civil rights. Experience or course work in employment law is preferred. Preference will be given to first time recipients, and applicants who complete their own applications for consideration for the fellowship. FL NELA is unable to accommodate requests to use the fellowship for academic credits.
Start Date for the fellowship: Flexible. Starting around May 28, 2014.
End Date: Flexible. Minimum ten (10) weeks required.

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is a non-profit legal and educational organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.
CCR seeks a full-time Program Manager to be responsible for designing and implementing curriculum and programming related to its newly-created Social Justice Institute (SJI), made possible by the generous funding of the Bertha Foundation. The Manager must be extremely organized and detail-oriented, able to efficiently manage multiple tasks and priorities, work well in a team, and demonstrate a commitment to human rights/social justice work.
Since 1987, CCR has trained the next generation of “people’s lawyers” through a variety of internships and fellowships, including its renowned Ella Baker Summer Fellowship Program. In 2012, CCR launched the Social Justice Institute to expand the legacy of the Ella Baker Program and to deepen the Center’s work in training the next generation of movement lawyers. This position offers a talented individual the opportunity to develop, alongside the SJI Director, domestic and international programming for law students and lawyers including writing curriculums, designing national and regional trainings/conferences, coordinating a national mentorship/coaching program, organizing CLE’s and facilitating alumni convenings amongst other programs.
In addition to curriculum and program development, the SJI Program Manager will also work with the SJI Program Director and Program Associate to oversee logistics of several SJI events, including CLEs, workshops and conferences.

The Tahirih Justice Center (Tahirih) is a national non-profit organization that protects courageous immigrant women and girls who refuse to be victims of violence, elevating their voices in communities, courts and Congress. Through pro bono holistic legal services and nonpartisan public policy advocacy, Tahirih empowers and supports women and girls seeking protection from gender-based human rights abuses such as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, “honor” crimes and forced marriage. Tahirih is a Bahá’í-inspired organization and works to create a world where women and girls enjoy equality and live in safety and with dignity. Winner of the 2010 Meyer Exponent Award which recognizes outstanding nonprofit executive directors and the 2007 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management, Tahirih has a staff of over 40 with offices in Falls Church, VA; Houston, TX; and Baltimore, MD.
Position Summary:
Tahirih is seeking a dynamic Director of Public Policy to spearhead Tahirih’s national advocacy initiatives, forging and mobilizing diverse coalitions and engaging bipartisan allies to press for laws, regulations, policies and precedent that better protect immigrant women and girls from violence.
The Director will lead Tahirih’s efforts to bring about lasting, systemic change and to secure stronger protections and supports for immigrant survivors, including under U.S. asylum laws, the Violence Against Women Act and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The Director will also drive the development of legislative and policy proposals emerging from Tahirih’s groundbreaking national campaigns, such as the Forced Marriage Initiative and the Campaign to End Abuse and Exploitation through International Marriage Brokers.
The Director will also promote other U.S. legislation to prevent and address violence against women and girls worldwide. The Director will serve as Tahirih’s primary spokesperson on policy issues to Tahirih supporters, advocates and colleague organizations, legislators and policymakers and the media. The Director will also work closely with Tahirih’s communications staff to enhance public understanding and to ensure that stakeholders are informed and invested in advocacy to protect and empower immigrant women and girls.
Based in Tahirih’s national headquarters office in Falls Church, VA, the Director of Public Policy will report to the Executive Director and manage a small but growing policy team.

Professor Froomkin is seeking one or more University of Miami School of Law students to do projects connected with “We Robot 2014″ a major conference on legal and policy issues relating to robotics, to be held at the law school on April 4 & 5, 2014. There is intellectual work to be done to set up the event, notably writing online summaries of all the accepted papers. There are also some administrative duties involved.
The job mostly involves a smaller amount of work now and a somewhat larger amount of work in the weeks leading up to the event. You would also be asked to attend and assist with the conference, for example, liaising with speakers and summarizing events online, on Twitter and other media.

Thirty Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans will be awarded in March 2014 on the basis of a single national competition. Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study – in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States.
Each award is for up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and up to $20,000 in tuition tuition and fees or 50% of required tuition and fees/year. The program promotes a strong sense of community among Soros Fellows through fall conferences and other activities for fellows receiving financial support and numerous events held throughout the country for fellows receiving financial support and numerous events held throughout the country for fellows who are no longer receiving financial support.

Each year, the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers seeks to recognize written contributions to the field of consumer financial services law. Eligible papers include publishable articles, substantial book reviews, or book chapters; books; and student case note or comment. In any year, depending on the quality of the submissions, awards may be made in all or some of these three categories.
The awards include a cash payment ($2,500 for books, $2,000 for articles, reviews, or book chapters; and $1,000 for student work), a certificate or other token of recognition, and travel expenses to attend the College’s annual dinner held in conjunction with the Spring Meeting of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association.
Guidelines:
Eligible entries must discuss some aspect of consumer financial services law. Topics that relate principally to securities regulation, insurance, or the safety and soundness aspects of banking regulation are not eligible, but works on subjects within these (or other) areas will be considered if they bear directly on consumer financial services.
The deadline for entry is December 2, 2013, and entries are eligible if they have been written or published within the twelve months preceding that date. Unpublished manuscripts should be double-spaced and conform to law review standards. All entries should be submitted in electronic format.

The Independence Foundation is a private, not-for-profit philanthropic organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving Philadelphia and its surrounding counties. The Foundation is specifically interested in addressing the need for legal aid and assistance to the disadvantaged. In order to help to meet this need, in 1996 the Foundation established the Independence Foundation Public Interest Law Fellowship Program. Independence Foundation Public Interest Law Fellowships provide support for law school graduates, outgoing judicial law clerks and attorneys who are currently employed and who want to work in the public interest for a legal services organization that qualifies as a 501(c)(3) organization and provides legal services to individuals who are disadvantaged, including the elderly, the disabled, the homeless or those deprived of their civil or human rights.
Application must be made within five years of law school graduation. The Foundation anticipates granting a maximum of three Fellowships in 2013, the nineteenth year of the program, with the expectation that the 2014 class of Fellows will begin to render service in the public interest by the end of September 2014.
Each Fellowship will provide the Fellow an annual salary in the amount of $46,000, plus the cost of health care benefits, disability insurance and employer’s withholding taxes as compensation for full time employment. These amounts will be paid on a quarterly basis directly to the sponsoring organization. The Foundation will not pay the cost of pension benefits or any fringe benefits, such as employment related travel expenses. In addition, each Fellowship will provide for those Fellows who owe student loans an amount equal to the amount due and payable on such loans during the term of the Fellowship up to a maximum amount of $10,000 in each Fellowship year. This amount will be paid on a quarterly basis directly to the employing organization. The Fellow shall be an employee of the organization and not the Foundation. To the extent that amounts paid under the Fellowship Program are deemed taxable, the Fellow shall be responsible for such tax obligations.
The duration of a Fellowship is one year. Fellowships may be renewed for one additional year if requested by the Fellow and approved by the Foundation Board of Directors and the sponsoring organization.
Grants will be made to sponsoring organizations only. Therefore, before final application, due September 25, 2013, a legal services organization that will sponsor the applicant must be identified. It is the responsibility of the applicant to secure a position with a potential sponsoring organization before submitting an application for a Fellowship.
If awarded a Fellowship, applicants will be expected to devote their full time to Fellowship work for the duration of the Independence Foundation Fellowship.
Applications must be received by September 25, 2013. Fellows will be notified in mid-December 2013.
