The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project (Summer 2014)

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the in the consumer protection and antitrust departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States, as well as the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs, and the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Protection.

The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (“NAAG”), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ADLF) is Hiring a Litigation Fellow

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) is extremely pleased to announce its new Litigation Fellowship Program with the ALDF Animal Law Institute, a first-of-its-kind program that, by training classes of promising litigators in strategic impact litigation, will further ALDF’s mission to protect the lives and advance the interests of all animals.

About ALDF:

For more than three decades, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has been fighting to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. Founded in 1979 by attorneys active in shaping the emerging field of animal law, ALDF has blazed the trail for stronger enforcement of anti-cruelty laws and more humane treatment of animals in every corner of American life. Today, ALDF’s groundbreaking efforts to push the U.S. legal system to end the suffering of abused animals are supported by hundreds of dedicated attorneys and more than 110,000 members. Every day, ALDF works to protect animals by:

  • Filing groundbreaking lawsuits to stop animal abuse and expand the boundaries of animal law;
  • Providing free legal assistance to prosecutors handling cruelty cases;

About the Animal Law Institute Litigation Fellowship:

The Fellow will learn to develop state and federal strategic impact litigation that betters the lives and legal status of animals. The Fellow will operate as part of a team, but will ultimately be responsible for the innovation and success of his or her projects while developing litigation skills. The model applicants must have earned a J.D. within the past three years, excelled in school, earned strong work references, and have a sincere and proven interest in animal protection. The primary focus of the fellowships is on civil animal law issues, but all Fellows will be exposed to criminal anti-cruelty cases as well.

The Fellowship begins in the Fall of 2014, lasts roughly two years and is based at ALDF’s headquarters in Cotati, California.

The Vermont Poverty Law Fellowship

The Vermont Bar Foundation and the Vermont Access to Justice Campaign are pleased to announce the availability of a two-year Vermont Poverty Law Fellowship (VPLF) beginning in August 2014. The VPLF program is designed to allow graduating law students and other new lawyers to help expand the reach of Vermont’s existing legal services providers. Funding for salary and benefits will be provided by the Vermont Access to Justice Fund and will be matched by supervision and office support from a host Vermont legal services organization.

The specific fellowship projects will be designed to take advantage of the Fellow’s background and the needs of the low-income community, and will be integrated directly into the services being delivered by one or more of the three major legal services programs in Vermont: Vermont Legal Aid, Legal Services Law Line of Vermont, and/or the South Royalton Legal Clinic at Vermont Law School. The fellowship will include work on one or more specific projects impacting the lives of low-income Vermonters, as well as the day-to-day delivery of legal services to clients. The three prior Fellows focused on foreclosure defense, Tropical Storm Irene relief and education issues. Additional areas of legal aid in Vermont include, but are not limited to, legal services to veterans, consumer, housing, public benefits, disability rights and immigration.

Fellows will work with the Vermont Bar Foundation and the Vermont Bar Association to publicize fellowship activities, contribute to the public awareness of legal services in Vermont, and participate in Vermont Bar Association continuing legal education activities.

Applicants must have excellent written and oral skills. Experience in public interest law, civil rights law or legal services is a plus. Applicants must be recent law school graduates or graduating law students and must be admitted to the Vermont Bar or willing to sit for the July 2014 examination. Some in-state travel is required.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Class of 2014 Application Period is Open and Will Close On October 15

Attention 3Ls and LLMs:

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Class of 2014 application period opens Tuesday, October 1 and will close on Tuesday, October 15 at 11:59pm Eastern Time.  The entire application process, including submission of all necessary documents, must be completed during this time period.

The PMF Program offers paid two-year appointments with Federal Government Agencies. More than 80 Federal Agencies recruit through this program and offer positions in public policy and administration, domestic or international issues, information technology, human resources, engineering, health and medical sciences, financial management, and many other fields in support of public service programs.  Please note that Finalists cannot be appointed into attorney positions and Fellows cannot reappoint into attorney positions. Finalists seeking appointments as an attorney in the Federal Government may wish to look for such opportunities outside the PMF Program through USAJOBS or on individual agency websites. However, attorney positions are excepted service so there is no public notice requirement for job vacancies.

How to Apply:

The Class of 2014 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Application launched today, Tuesday, October 1, 2013.  You may access the application on USAJOBS, or from the PMF homepage.  Remember to study the PMF Assessment Preparation Guide before you begin the on-line assessment portion of the application.  Also, the assessment is not timed, but be sure to submit your completed application by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. If you will meet all graduate degree requirements (even though you have not necessarily graduated), including the completion or successful defense of any required thesis or dissertation (as required), during the academic year (September 1, 2013 – August 31, 2014), you are eligible to apply for the PMF Class of 2014.
  2. If you obtained your advance degree from a qualifying college or university no more than 2 years prior to the opening date of the announcement for the Class of 2014 application, you are eligible to apply.

The Law Student Division Mentoring Program

The Florida Bar YLD Law Student Division Mentoring Program was designed with the main goal of connecting Law Student Division members with Florida attorneys. The Florida Bar YLD Law Student Division has built a statewide network of attorneys to mentor students both locally and across the state. To accommodate Law Student Division members, mentees have the opportunity to select whether they prefer to be paired with a local mentor or an Across-the-State mentor. Local mentors are expected to meet with their mentees at least 5 times during the program, focusing on real legal experience, networking and professionalism by allowing their mentee to attend events and activities such as depositions, trials, negotiations, closings, hearings, mediations, document executions, client consultations, and/or local bar events, activities and educational programs.

Across-the-State mentors benefit those students who may be attending law school in one part of the State, but who have plans after graduation to practice in another part of the State, and/or students who want to learn about a particular practice area in which a practitioner outside of their school’s geographic region specializes. Mentors and mentees paired through an “Across-the-State” mentoring relationship will communicate electronically and/or by phone. Such relationship will allow the mentee to establish a relationship with an attorney who practices in their future “home” base and/or ideal post-graduation practice area.

The Law Student Division Mentoring Program is a benefit to Law Student Division members. Therefore, only applications received from Law Student Division members will be considered for the Mentoring Program. Law Student Division membership is free to law students and we encourage you to sign-up as a Law Student Division member by clicking here.

Applications will close on October 15, 2013 at midnight. The form for the mentoring program is due October 15th.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Seeks Human Rights Specialists

Under the supervision of the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), directly or through the corresponding Specialist and under their general supervision, the Human Rights Specialists will be responsible for several duties, including case processing and reporting, research and monitoring, seminars and conferences.

There are currently 2 positions available and they are for six months each and both are located in Washington, DC.

The deadline to apply is October 7, 2013.

Qualifications:

Essential: Juris Doctor or First University Degree (Bachelor’s) in law, international public law or human rights issued by a duly accredited institution and 4 years of relevant experience in similar positions at the national and/or international level OR Advanced University Degree (Master’s) in one of the fields listed above and 2 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of the principles and theories of international public law and human rights law.

Desirable:  Experience or knowledge of the OAS mandates and priorities as related to the area of work and/or the dynamics of the Inter-American agenda and system; experience working in an individual case system.

Computer Skills: Ability to effectively work using Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, and Excel), and other software applicable to the area of work.

Languages:

Essential – Proficient in English and Spanish (read, write and communicate).

Desirable – Working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Internship Program

The period to apply for an internship at the IACHR is now open. The deadline is October 6, 2013, and the period for the internship is January 12 to May 2, 2014. The internships are unpaid.

The IACHR has opportunities for law students and recently graduated lawyers. The IACHR also receives students and recently graduates in translation who can work in at least two of the four official languages of the OAS (English, Spanish, Portuguese and French).

The Inter-American Commission’s internship program is managed in conjunction with the OAS Internship Program. It gives young law students and lawyers recently graduated from the OAS Member States the opportunity to learn about the IACHR and work in applying the protection mechanisms provided by the inter-American human rights system. One of the benefits of this program is that after the internship, the acquired knowledge is used in the intern’s home country.

During the internship, the participants have the opportunity to work with the Executive Secretariat’s professionals and staff on the various activities carried out by the IACHR. The specific assignments are given by the Executive Secretariat.

Over the years, dozens of young people have been interns or fellows at the IACHR. Many of them have gone on to defend human rights in their home countries, perhaps by representing victims of human rights violations, filing petitions and requests for precautionary measures with the Commission, advising civil society organizations that represent victims in the inter-American system, or working with government bodies and Ombudsmen’s Offices. The knowledge these young students and attorneys acquire on how the inter-American system works, through their experience at the IACHR, plays a role in their professional development in international human rights law, and also has a multiplying effect that takes place when they return to their home countries.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program offers paid two-year federal government fellowships.  More than 80 Federal agencies recruit through this program and offer positions in public policy and administration, domestic or international issues, information technology, human resources, engineering, health and medical sciences, law (very limited), financial management and many other fields in support of public service programs.

The PMF Program Office invites interested applicants with any unique questions regarding the program and application process to join the Coffee Chat on Wednesday, October 2nd, any time between 2 and 4 PM (Eastern Time).

The PMF Class of 2014 tentative application period is from Tuesday, October 1 through Tuesday, October 15, 2013. More information will follow.

We recommend you apply early and set aside ample time to complete the entire application.

The Become A PMF section on the PMF website will soon be updated for the PMF Class of 2014 application cycle. Most information on the website is from last year’s application process, but the information will give you a good overview of the general application process. If applicants have specific questions, they should consider dropping in to the session.
