This event takes place on Thursday, November 7, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Miami Science Museum, 3280 S. Miami Avenue.

The event is a benefit for Dade Legal Aid, which provides a safety net of legal services to foster youth, victims of violence and other disenfranchised individuals and families in our community.

The Workforce Recruitment Program for Students with Disabilities

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the work-place through summer or permanent jobs.

The WRP provides students and recent graduates with disabilities in all fields of study the opportunity to market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States, sharpen their interviewing skills during a required phone interview with a WRP recruiter, and gain valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job.

Applicants for the program must: 

  • have an intellectual disability, severe physical disability, or psychiatric disability which makes the candidate eligible to use the Schedule A hiring authority; AND
  • be a U.S. citizen; AND
  • be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) to seek a degree; OR
  • be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the enrollment period immediately prior to graduation; OR
  • have graduated from such an institution within the past year.

The WRP is run on an annual basis and requires applicants to have a phone interview with one of their recruiters. The interviews take place from October through mid-November of each year. The WRP is coordinated on college campuses by Disability Services or Career Services offices. Currently, over 270 colleges and universities participate in the program, and additional campuses are added each year. They had over 2,900 candidates in the 2013 database.

Minority Law Students Resume Review & Mock Interview Workshop & Networking Event

On October 17, 2013 at 6:30 p.m., the Gwne S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association (GSCBWLA), South Asian Bar Association (SABA), the Venezuelan American Bar Association (VENAMBAR) and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) are hosting their second professional development workshop and networking event for minority law students in South Florida. The workshop includes resume reviews and mock interviews with practitioners. The bar associations will be collaborating with the Florida Bar Law Student Division Governors from the University of Miami, Florida International University, University of St. Thomas and Nova Southeastern University.

The American Bankruptcy Institute Announces The Sixth Annual Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition

The American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) is pleased to announce the Sixth Annual Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition. The competition allows law students to submit papers for the chance to be published in ABI’s magazine, the ABI Journal (read by more than 13,000 professionals monthly) or one of ABI’s committee newsletters, in addition to $4,000 in total cash prizes.

Please note that ABI does not require a law professor to approve papers prior to submission AND all students who participate will receive a one-year ABI membership.

ABI invites papers on current issues regarding bankruptcy jurisdiction, bankruptcy litigation or evidence in bankruptcy cases or proceedings. The paper may address business or consumer cases and may include matters such as bankruptcy sales, plan confirmation and other topics that involve jurisdiction, litigation or evidence in the bankruptcy courts. Previous winning topics include voting rights in inter-creditor agreements, the vacant class of creditors, and loss mitigation in bankruptcy.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The LKQ Government Affairs Internship Program will enable students to learn a wide range of career topics from federal and state legislation to public relations and analytical research while gaining knowledge of the automotive industry as a whole. The LKQ GAD Intern will become skilled and experienced in the field of government affairs through task-oriented exposure and involvement. On a daily basis, the LKQ GAD Intern will perform assignments directly related to the legislative process and various industry issues. Moreover, the LKQ GAD Intern will participate in special projects specifically designed to develop the Intern’s research, analytical, critical-thinking and leadership skills. In terms of mentorship opportunities, the LKQ GAD Intern will interact with senior executives, industry experts, state lobbyists and government affairs professionals to learn about their leading and critical roles within the company, industry and legislative process. By the end of the internship program, the LKQ GAD Intern will be equipped with solid experience, skills and industry contacts to pursue a career in government affairs or advance to graduate studies in law, political science, communications, and other related fields.

TIME COMMITMENT: Internship from December 2013 through June 2014 (20 – 30 hours a week).

OPTION #1 – ACADEMIC CREDIT: Interns may arrange to receive academic credit from his/her university advisor(s). LKQ Government Affairs will assist in verifying hours on the job and work load.

Larry J. Hoffman, JD ’54, is a Founding Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Greenberg Traurig.

The Larry J. Hoffman, Greenberg Traurig Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Business of Law was established in 2006 by the Greenberg Traurig firm to honor Larry Hoffman. The professorship supports a series of visiting professors and/or lectures on the business of law.

The American Bar Association Business Law Section Offers Two Opportunities For Law Students

The ABA Business Law Section offers two outstanding initiatives specifically for law students:

2014 Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest:

This highly regarded student writing contest is in its 28th year. Law students writing on a business law subject of general and current interest have the opportunity to win up to $2,500 and a paid trip to the Section Spring Meeting in Los Angeles, CA.

2014 Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program:

Up to 9 law students from diverse backgrounds are placed in summer business court clerkships around the country. Students will gain invaluable experience and the opportunity to build their network. They will also receive a stipend to cover living expenses for the duration of the 8-week clerkship.

The ABA National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws Southeast Regional Hearing

In 1992 a Presidential Task Force on Minorities in the Justice system was created in the aftermath of the Rodney King disturbances. Shortly thereafter, a report was issued with recommendations by the Task Force. The Task Force became the Coalition on Racial and Ethnic Justice in 1994. It was designed to implement the recommendations and develop partnerships among community groups, civil rights organizations, businesses, religious organizations, and bar associations for the purpose of eliminating racial and ethnic bias in the justice system. Its primary goal is to serve as a catalyst for eliminating racial and ethnic bias in the justice system with a focus on systemic change.

The ABA Coalition on Racial and Ethnic Justice (COREJ) examines issues stemming from the intersection of race and ethnicity with the legal system. COREJ partners with non-ABA entities in working to address these issues.

Recent initiatives address:

  • Election Protection
  • Teen Violence
  • Perceptions of People of Color and others of the Legal System
  • Foreclosures and the Mortgage Crisis in Communities of Color
  • Restoring Justice and Equity during Disasters

The ABA National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws Southeast Regional Hearing takes place on Thursday, October 17, 2013, 6:00 PM – 8:00 p.m., at HistoryMiami, 101 C   West Flagler Street, Miami, FL. The Task Force was convened principally to review, analyze, and assess the utility of the recently enacted state Stand Your Ground laws, as well as the potential impact these laws may have on public safety, individual liberties and the criminal justice system.

Expert witnesses drawn from local and regional community and government stakeholders, law enforcement, prosecutors, public and private criminal defense attorneys, and legal academicians will testify on the impact of Stand Your Ground laws in the Southeast region, where several states that have enacted similar expanded self-defense statutes.
