Interested in the intersection of RJ and HIV/AIDS?

Want to get hands on training in federal law and policy?

Rub elbows with the leading advocates?

Then consider submitting an application for the 2015-16 Reproductive Justice Fellowship Program (RJFP). The program runs from the end of August 2015 through August 2016.

RJ Federal Fellows will be placed at nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. to work to advance reproductive  justice through law and policy. RJ-HIV Fellows will be placed at SisterLove (Atlanta, GA) or Positive Women’s Network – USA (Oakland, CA) and will work at the intersection of RJ and HIV issues.

Application deadline is Monday, November 3, 2014 at 5:00pm PT. Please visit the RJFP website to fill out the online form and download the applications.

Registration is Now Open for the Workforce Recruitment Program!

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) is a referral and recruitment program that identifies students with disabilities who are interested in employment with the federal government. The WRP is one of the main paths to:

  • Find an internship or permanent position at federal agencies
  • Explore careers in the federal service
  • Gain Interviewing experience

A recruiter will be assigned to the University of Miami School of Law to conduct interviews with interested candidates. Candidates that are accepted into the program will have the opportunity to be interviewed for federal and private sector positions. Participation is open to any students with disabilities at all levels and majors, and degree programs. Veterans with disabilities are especially urged to apply.

In The Community:

Books and Buddies. Law student leaders are needed for this program that targets children who attend local elementary schools in order to promote reading, writing and education. Each semester, Books & Buddies pairs law students with local school children to share and communicate the excitement of reading through the exchange of letters. Correspondence is traded weekly between the Buddies and provides an opportunity for each to learn about their reading pen pal. Interested students should e-mail UM HOPE with the subject line “Books and Buddies”. Please indicate if you are interested in volunteering as a Buddy and/or serving as a project leader.

Empowered Youth. The mission of Empowered Youth is to break the cycle of teens who are or have been in Juvenile Detention by empowering them to create a lasting transformation and a positive life for both themselves and their communities. Internship with ACLU of Miami

The American Civil Liberties Union of Miami is seeking a volunteer 2L or 3L intern for 15 hours per week to work on policy issues such as immigration, the death penalty, elections, juvenile justice, anti-bullying and anti-discrimination. The Equal Justice Works annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country. More than 1,200 students from 165 law schools attend for two days of interviews, workshops, networking and other career opportunities. Public interest employers conduct interviews for internship and full-time positions and meet with students in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities. The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and more. Externship with Planned Parenthood Latin America Program in Miami

Planned Parenthood Global is seeking a 2L or 3L extern to work 20 hours per week during the fall semester. Computer skills are required and fluency in Spanish is preferred. Externs will have the opportunity to learn about the organization’s work and how it uses international mechanisms to advocate and protect human rights. Immigration Assistance Projects

Americans for Immigrant Justice is seeking a volunteer to assist with Know Your Rights presentations, intakes and document preparation at the Broward Transitional Center on Thursdays. Interested students should contact Jessica Shulruff, Senior Attorney for the Detention and LUCHA Projects. Spanish speakers needed. Catholic Charities Legal Services is seeking assistance with interviewing unaccompanied immigrant children for potential relief. Volunteers may choose any days to help facilitate at the Immigration Court in Miami. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for a half or whole day, any time between now and September 12th. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

VITA volunteers help people with basic tax returns, particularly those with moderate income and fixed income, individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking and elderly taxpayers. Preparation for this project begins during the fall semester and volunteers are needed to lead both on-campus and off-campus activities. Interested students should e-mail UM HOPE with the subject line “VITA volunteer”.

American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers (ACCFSL) 2015 Writing Competition – Deadline for Submission is December 1, 2014

The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers is pleased to announce awards to be presented for:

(a) the best book

(b) the best publishable article, book chapter, or substantial book review

(c) the best student note or comment

on a topic dealing with consumer financial services law.

The awards include cash payments of $2500, $2000, and $1000, respectively, a Certificate of Recognition from the College, and travel expenses to attend the Spring 2015 meeting of the College. In any given year, depending on submissions, all three awards, or fewer, may be made.

Eligible entries will address a topic on consumer financial services, but not securities regulation, insurance, or the safety-and-soundness aspects of banking regulation. Works on subjects within these (or other) areas, however, will be considered if they bear directly on consumer financial services.

Entries must have been written or published between November 15, 2013, and December 1, 2014. The deadline for submission is December 1, 2014. Unpublished entries should be typed, double spaced, and in law review format.

The winners will be honored at the annual meeting of the College held in conjunction with the Spring Meeting of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, to be held in San Francisco in April 2015.

The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers is a nonprofit association of attorneys who have made significant contributions to consumer financial services law over an extended period of time. Its members include academics, present and former federal and state regulatory and enforcement officers, authors in the field, private practitioners, counsel for financial institutions and other service providers, and representatives of consumer protection and advocacy organizations.
