A Unique Opportunity – Dinsmore 2022 Diversity Scholarship Program

Dinsmore is proud to offer a unique opportunity for a first-year law student to split their summer associate experience between Dinsmore and Procter & Gamble, a global consumer goods company. One first-year scholarship recipient will be a salaried summer associate for both P&G and Dinsmore, splitting a 12-week period between both organizations’ Cincinnati, Ohio offices. One scholarship recipient will be a salaried summer associate at both Dinsmore and Humana, Inc., spending half of the 10-week summer associate program with Dinsmore and half with Humana, Inc.’s Legal Department receiving summer associate salary from each respective employer. Finally, we are also offering an opportunity for a first-year law student to split their summer associate experience between Dinsmore and global restaurant company Yum! Brands, Inc. One scholarship recipient will be a salaried Dinsmore summer associate, who will spend half the 12-week summer associate program in the Yum! Brands corporate headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. The chosen scholarship recipients will receive up to $10,000 and are assigned a mentor to serve as a dedicated resource for professional development. The Shook Scholars Institute is an innovative diversity and inclusion-focused development program concentrated on litigation and trial skills, leadership, and career success competencies for the underrepresented attorney. New Hampshire 1L Summer Associate Diversity Program

The legal community of New Hampshire is excited to announce a new initiative for 1L law students with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Five of the state’s leading law firms are each offering a ten-week, paid Summer Associate position during summer 2022.  The firms, in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, will partner together to offer joint programming for their participating students throughout the summer, designed to introduce the participants to life in the Granite State.  Each of the firms will provide a meaningful law firm experience to students who have completed one year of law school and who will contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts of the firms and the New Hampshire legal community. 

Timeline:

  • Applications accepted on a rolling basis through January 14, 2022  
  • Interviews will be conducted (remotely) in late January and/or early February 2022
  • Offers will be made by early February 2022
  • 2022 program will run June 1, 2022 – August 9, 2022

What Accepted Students Can Expect?

The 1L students who receive job offers from one of the five participating law firms for this ten-week paid internship will be working at one of the firm’s offices in Concord or Manchester, New Hampshire, and as may be applicable on occasion at participating firms’ offices in other locations.  Students accepted through the program will have the opportunity to experience legal practice and life in New Hampshire, participate in professional development programs, and build their social and business networks within the firm and the larger legal community.

Who Should Apply?

First-year law students attending an ABA accredited law school anywhere in the United States are eligible to apply.  Candidates must commit and contribute to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Applications will also be reviewed based upon the applicant’s academic record, writing skills, analytical and interpersonal skills, and personal statement. 

Each of the firms recognizes that diversity exists in many different forms, including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability, and is critically important to providing excellent client service and an enriched work environment for its attorneys and staff.  Each participating firm is an equal employment opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will be considered. 

How to Apply?

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until January 14, 2022.  For the application form with detailed instructions for applicants, please ask your CDO advisor.   

Interested students should submit an application form, resume, current law school transcript, a writing sample of no longer than 5 pages, and a brief personal statement describing their anticipated commitment and contribution to this program and/or why they believe diversity, equity, and inclusion are important in the legal profession.  

Applicants should not wait for transcripts to be available before applying, but—rather—supplement their applications with the transcript when it becomes available.  If an applicant’s transcript will not be available by the date the application period closes, but will be available by January 20th, the applicant should submit their application prior to the above deadline with a supplemental statement, certified by their law school’s registrar, confirming the date their transcript will be available.

2022 Delaware Diversity Job Fair 1L Fellowship Program

The Delaware Diversity Job Fair Committee (DDJF) of the Delaware State Bar Association (DSBA) is excited to announce its 2022 1L Fellowship. The Job Fair was founded by a consortium of Delaware law firm, corporate, and public sector/interest legal employers interested in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Delaware bar by encouraging interested law students to explore summer and full- time opportunities to work in Delaware.

The employers of the DDJF are dedicated to expanding diversity and inclusion in the legal profession within the First State. We strive to make the remarkable professional opportunities afforded by the practice of law in Delaware accessible to all interested candidates. Our signature job fair has facilitated the recruiting of diverse talent into traditional 2L summer associate programs and post-graduate positions for 30 years. We recognize the imperative to keep expanding the pipeline and are happy to extend our recruiting efforts to first-year law students through the DDJF 1L Fellowship for positions in Delaware for summer 2022. In addition to positions with law firms, in-house positions may also be available in the legal departments of various types of organizations. The Program is not just a vehicle for finding summer employment but an opportunity to join and help build a more diverse and inclusive legal community.

All first-year students at ABA-accredited law schools with a commitment to practicing or living in Delaware and a demonstrated connection to diversity in the profession are encouraged to apply. Part- time, evening, and joint-degree students are eligible to participate in the Program if they: (i) will have completed the equivalent of at least one year of law school, but less than two years, by May 2022, and will graduate in 2024; and (ii) have no time obligations that may interfere with a full-time commitment to the summer employer.

The 1L Diversity Fellowship Committee will evaluate candidates on their: academic record; leadership; oral and written communication, research, analytical and organizational skills; sensitivity to professional and ethical concerns; maturity, judgment, and integrity; commitment to the practice of law; commitment to hard work; demonstrated interest in the type of work practiced by the employers in the Program; ability to instill confidence in others; ability to diagnose and plan solutions to problems; initiative; professionalism; relevant work experience; and extracurricular activities and interests, along with other indicia of their potential for success.

The application includes: (i) completed application form (attached); (ii) current resume; (iii) unofficial transcripts from law school, college, and post-graduate programs (if any); (iv) law school writing sample; (v) list of activities and honors, noting leadership positions (optional); (vi) brief personal statement; and (vii) other information the Committee requests or is relevant. Submit your application online no later than January 12, 2022 by 11:59 PM.

LCLD 1L Scholars Program Job Opportunities Update

The application period for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s (LCLD) 2021 1L Scholars Program is now open. Designed to offer diverse, first-year law students the opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with attorneys from LCLD Member organizations, 165 (and counting) law firms and corporations will be hosting summer internships across the country.

In addition to a meaningful summer internship, 2022 1L Scholars also have the opportunity to benefit from:

  • Attending the 2022 1L LCLD Virtual Scholars Summit on June 7-9, 2022, which helps students build leadership and networking skills.  You can view the agenda from 2021 here as the agenda for 2022 is currently being created.
  • Mock interviews with attorneys from selected LCLD Member law firms and LCLD Member corporations.
  • Career-development resources and long-term connections with other 1L Scholars via the exclusive 1L LCLD Scholars LinkedIn group. 1L Scholars will be invited to join the LinkedIn group in spring 2022.
  • Group Mentoring Program (GMP) events during the summer for 1L Scholars to continue to build their network and participate in professional development sessions

2022 Affordable Housing & Community Development Law Student Legal Writing Competition

Official Rules

Description:

This writing competition (“Competition”) is sponsored by the Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law (“Forum”) of the American Bar Association (“ABA”), 321 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60654 (the “Sponsor”). The goal of the competition is to encourage law students to become involved in the Forum. It is also intended to attract students to the affordable housing, community development or pro bono practice fields, and to encourage scholarship in these fields. Each entrant must follow the rules of the competition detailed herein.

Eligibility:

Open to all law students who are at the time of entry, (a) enrolled in a law school that is at the time of entry, ABA Accredited, (b) member of the ABA and the Forum, (c) at least 21 years old, and (d) U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Employees of the ABA, its respective affiliates, and immediate family or household members of such employees are not eligible for the Competition.

Topic:

Entries should address any legal issue regarding affordable housing, fair housing and/or community development law.

Submission Requirements:

(a) Entries must be original, unpublished work. Any relevant article or essay may be submitted for the competition, including writing submitted for academic credit. Submissions must not have been previously published in any media. Only one essay, per competition theme, may be submitted by each entrant. Failure to submit an original essay will result in disqualification and selection of a new winner. Entries should be between 25-50 double-spaced pages, with 1-inch margins, in Times New Roman, 12 pt. size Font. Articles should include footnotes in Bluebook format (single
spaced in Times New Roman, 10 pt. size font and which shall count towards the word limit).

(b) There is no entry form of any kind. Entries should be submitted in Word format. All author-identifying information should be removed from the entry.

(c) A separate title page should be attached and must contain the entry’s title, the student’s name, law school and expected graduation year, and the student’s contact information including mailing address, phone number(s), and email address.

(d) Entries must be submitted by e-mail to the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Affordable Housing and Community Development Law (the “Journal”), Professor Anita Singh Lemar anika.lemar@yale.edu no later than 11:59 PM Central Time, on March 4, 2022. The Sponsor is not responsible for errors or for lost, late, or misdirected email, or telecommunication or hardware or software failures, including by reason of any bug or computer virus or other failure.

Selection and Notification of Winners:

The entries will be judged anonymously by a five (5) person committee comprised of members of the Forum. Decision of the Sponsor (including the committee judging the entries are final). Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: clarity of the topic, significance of the topic, manner in which the topic is treated, organization, quality of analysis, quality of research, authority, and citations, and quality of grammar, syntax, and form. The winning entry will be notified by email by April 18, 2022, 11:59 pm Central Time. The winner must acknowledge and confirm agreement to the terms and conditions of winning the competition no later than April 22, 2022, after which he/she forfeits the prizes and another winner may be selected.

Award:

A single winning entry, as judged by the selection committee, will be eligible to receive a prize of (a) a $1,000 cash prize. Winner will be solely responsible for reporting and payment of all taxes (federal, state, local or other) on prizes, which will include the value of any accommodations and airfare. Winner will be required to complete a W-9, affidavit of eligibility, tax acknowledgment and liability release for tax purposes. All forms must be completed and returned via email to Dawn R. Holiday at dawn.holiday@americanbar.org within 15 business days of receipt, or prizes will be
considered forfeited and another winner may be named. The decision of the Sponsor, including the judging committee is final.

At the sole discretion of the Sponsor, the winning essay may be selected for publication in the Journal. If selected for publication, winner will be required to sign a standard publication agreement giving the ABA the right of first publication. Please note: The Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law must have the first right of publication of the selected essay.

License/Grant of Rights:

By entering, the winning entrant consents to the publication of her/his entry by the ABA, understands that such publication is not guaranteed, and grants the ABA the following rights: (1) the exclusive worldwide right of first publication of their entry in any and all ABA media or form of communication; (2) the non-exclusive worldwide right, in ABA’s sole discretion, to use, transcribe, publish reproduce, distribute, sell (as part of an ABA publication) or display the entry, alone or in conjunction with other materials; (3) the right to edit the essay to conform to the publication’s standards of style, technological requirements, language, grammar and punctuation, provided the meaning of the essay is not materially altered; and (4) the non-exclusive worldwide right to use the winner’s name and likeness in connection with the essay or this Competition, in each case, without further compensation. Additionally, the winning entrant must execute a separate
publication agreement giving the ABA the publication rights enumerated above and the right to use the article for any other purpose related to the ABA mission. If the winner fails
to sign the agreement within 30 calendar days of receipt, the prize will be considered forfeited and another winner named.

Entry Deadline:

All entries must be emailed by March 24, 2022, 11:59 pm Central.

Odds of Winning:

Chances of winning may vary depending on the number of entries. However, Sponsor reserves the right not to award any prize if the judges determine that no entries are of sufficient quality to merit selection that year.

Laws and Regulations:

This Competition is governed by U.S. law and all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. By entering, all participants agree that the competition shall be governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, that the courts of Illinois shall have exclusive jurisdiction, and that Cook County, Illinois shall be the venue for any dispute or litigation relating to or arising from the competition. Void where prohibited by law.

Conditions of Participation:

By participating, each entrant agrees to these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor and releases and discharges the Sponsor, including but not limited to the ABA, subsidiary and affiliated entities, and each of their respective officers, directors, members, employees, independent contractors, agents, representatives, successors and assigns (collectively “Released Parties”) from any and all liability whatsoever in connection with this Competition, including without limitation legal claims, costs, injuries, losses or damages, demands or actions of any kind (including without limitation personal injuries, death, damage to, loss or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation, or portrayal in a false light) (collectively “Claims”). Except where
prohibited, acceptance of a prize constitutes a release by any winner of the Released Parties of any and all Claims in connection with the administration of this promotion and the use, misuse or possession of any prize. All entries submitted to the ABA become the property of the ABA and will not be returned; however, entrants who do not win first-place may submit their entries for publication elsewhere. Entrants must not submit their articles for publication elsewhere prior to December 31, 2021. All expenses involved in preparing and submitting an entry are the sole responsibility of the entrant.

Sponsor is not responsible for errors or for lost, late, or misdirected mail or email, or telecommunication or hardware or software failures, including by reason of any bug or computer virus or other failure. Sponsor may cancel, modify or terminate the promotion if it is not capable of completion as planned, including by reason of infection by computer virus, tampering, unauthorized intervention, force majeure or technical difficulties of any kind.
