Summer 2018 Litigation Program Clerkship With the Animal Legal Defense Fund

When: The clerkships are full-time (35 hours/week), during summer 2018, for a period of 3 months (approximately 12 weeks) with a flexible starting date (dependent upon the student’s schedule).

Location: Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Cotati, California office.

Responsibilities: The clerks will be closely supervised and trained by top experts in animal law. Clerks will complete legal research, work with Animal Legal Defense Fund’s litigation department in developing new cases, and learn how to prepare pleadings in cases currently handled by the Animal Legal Defense Fund. The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law.

Stipend: This is an unpaid clerkship. There is a monthly stipend of $2,400 (the total stipend is $7,200). This is to assist you in paying for reasonable expenses, including room and board, gas, travel, and other expenses.

Eligibility: Summer clerkships are open to second-year students only (rising third year students).

Application Deadline: November 20, 2017.

How to Apply: Students must apply for either the Criminal Justice Program Clerkship or the Litigation Program Clerkship. Applications submitted to both programs will not be considered. Forward an application form (PDF), cover letter (addressed to Director of Litigation Matthew Liebman), resumé (including 2-3 professional references), original writing sample, and transcript (unofficial is okay) via email. Please consolidate application materials into one PDF, if possible. Only complete applications will be considered.

The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law. The primary focus of this clerkship is on criminal cases involving animal cruelty, but there will exposure to civil animal law issues as well.

FIU Invites Students to the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals on October 24th 2017

The U.S. Air Force JAG is extending an invitation to students to attend an Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals oral argument on Tuesday, October 24th. An Air Force JAG recruiter will also be in attendance and will discuss Air Force JAG employment opportunities.

Oral arguments will be heard in the large courtroom at Florida International University College of Law from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The case to be argued is United States vs. Airman Braxton T. Swafford.

All Miami Law students are invited to attend. Students who are interested in the JAG Corps are welcome and encouraged to attend.

For directions and a map of FIU and the event venue, please ask the CDO or your advisor. There is metered visitor parking in both the lot and garage adjacent to the law school.

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program – Pathway to a Federal Government Job

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program offers paid two-year appointments with Federal Government Agencies.  This rigorous fellowship includes challenging assignments, developmental assignments, and networking opportunities. Finalists appointed as PMFs are hired by Federal Agencies and engage in solving domestic and/or international issues in areas such as public administration, engineering, technology, science, criminal justice, health, privacy, cybersecurity, and financial management, to name a few.  The PMF Program seeks eligible graduate students every year who want to make a difference through public service.  More information about application and selection process is available on the PMF website.

The Class of 2018 PMF application period will be open from October 23, 2017 – November 1, 2017 and the announcement can be found online when it opens (simply search for “Presidential Management Fellows” during the open period).  The announcement will only be visible during the application period.  To learn more about eligibility and how to apply, please review the “Become a PMF” section on the PMF website. Carefully review the “Application Process” and “Application Tips” sections on the PMF website before working on your on-line application AND you are encouraged to apply early.

The selection process for the PMF Program consists of the following:

  • Complete the On-line Application, which includes a resume and transcript (and/or alternative), and supporting documentation for any of the following that apply to you:
    • requesting reasonable accommodations,
    • claiming veterans’ preference, and/or
    • claiming Native American/Indian preference.
  • Complete the On-Line Assessment (allow for 2-3 hours to complete).  Please review the Assessment Preparation Guide for additional information, which will be available shortly before the announcement opens.)
  • Finalists will be selected in mid-November
  • Finalists will be invited to participate in the Virtual PMF Hiring Fair in December and can search PMF appointment opportunities on the PMF website (available positions updated throughout the year)
  • Finalists will have 12 months from the date selected as Finalists to secure appointment with agency.

20th Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

The Recording Academy™, in concert with some of the nation’s most prominent entertainment attorneys, established the Entertainment Law Initiative® to promote discussion and debate about the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. Now in its 20th year, the program has grown to include a national writing competition, mentor sessions, and a GRAMMY® Week event.

ELI fosters future careers in entertainment law by seeking out the nation’s top law students and giving them invaluable networking and educational opportunities. The ELI writing contest challenges students to identify, research, and write an essay with a proposed solution on a compelling legal issue confronting the music industry. A national panel of music law experts will judge the papers in a blind process to select a winner and a runner up. This contest is open to juris doctorate candidates currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school.

The ELI event will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 in New York City and at this function the winner of the ELI Writing Competition will be recognized. This event also features recognition of a top music industry legal figure annually and serves as a key gathering of the industry’s legal and executive community during GRAMMY Week. Further details and ticket information for this event will be announced soon.

In the meantime, law students are encouraged to participate in the ELI Writing Competition to further their knowledge, better connect to the music and legal community and also to get a chance to attend the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards in New York City in 2018.

Winner and Runner-Up Chosen:

January 10, 2018.

ELI Event & Winner Scholarship Presentation, New York City:

Inaugural John D. Greenwald Writing Competition Submission Deadline: November 15, 2017

IIEL and the Georgetown Journal of International Law are pleased to announce the launch of the Inaugural John D. Greenwald Writing Competition.  The Competition is seeking submissions of Notes from current JD, LL.M., or SJD students on international economic law.  The Competition, named after John D. Greenwald, a former Deputy General Counsel in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives and first head of Import Administration in the Department of Commerce, commemorates his life by inviting top submissions on current issues relevant to international trade law, the jurisprudence of the WTO or regional trade organizations, jurisprudence concerning U.S. trade organizations, an issue relating to the political economy or the efficacy of U.S. or international trade regimes.

The winning Note will be published in the trade issue of the Georgetown Journal of International Law, one of the nation’s top resources for trade scholars and practitioners in the field of international law.  In addition, the author of the winning Note will receive a cash prize.  The competition is managed and supervised by the Institute of International Economic Law.  The evaluation of written submissions and the publication of the winning submission(s) will be managed by the Georgetown Journal of International Law.  The deadline for submission to this year’s competition is November 15th, 2017.  Submissions should be between 30 and 55 pages, double-spaced, submitted in .doc or .docx format, in Times New Roman 12-point font, and accompanied by a 1-4 page summary of the Note.  Please submit entries via email.
