Two Panels on Careers in Consumer Protection and Privacy Law – Join the Discussion!

The ABA Section of Antitrust Law Consumer Protection Committee is hosting two teleconferences on careers in consumer protection and privacy law for law students and young lawyers on February 1 and February 8, 2018 at 3 pm ET.

Join current consumer protection attorneys for a telephonic panel discussions to hear tips on pursuing consumer protection law as a possible career.  Panelists will share their experiences as private practitioners and attorneys at government agencies including the Federal Trade Commission, the Canadian Competition Bureau, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Department of Justice.  The discussions will also include ways the Section of Antitrust Law can serve as a valuable resource for law students.

Epstein Becker Green 20th Annual Health Law Writing Competition

Epstein Becker Green is pleased to announce its 20th Annual Health Law Writing Competition. The competition is designed to encourage J.D. and LL.M. students in the preparation of scholarly papers on current topics of interest relating to health law.

Cash prizes will be awarded as follows for the three best papers:

First Place: $4,000        Second Place: $2,000      Third Place: $500

Entrants should take advantage of the fact that health law is a very broad and diverse field, encompassing aspects of almost every area of law. Papers may address any traditional area of the law as applied to health care (e.g., antitrust, tax, corporate) or areas of law unique to health care (e.g., fraud and abuse, managed care, Medicare/Medicaid, clinical trials, telehealth/telemedicine). Entries ranked in the top 20 percent of all competition submissions will be considered for publication in the Annals of Health Law, which is published by the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Papers must be submitted by Friday, February 9, 2018.

  • CDO Presents: 1L Workshop + Symplicity Training – 12:30 PM – 1:50 PM – Law School Campus, Room F-309: During the spring semester, 1L students will have an opportunity to participate in Spring Recruiting, which includes the Spring On Campus Interview Program, Spring Resume Referral Program and Summer Externship Program. By participating in these programs, 1L students will have an opportunity to apply for legal internships for the upcoming summer. The 1L CDO Workshops will provide students will complete instructions on how to prepare for and participate in Spring Recruiting, including how to use Symplicity, the web-based program used to administer Spring Recruiting. Two sessions of this program will be held; both sessions are the same and 1L students need only to attend one. For any questions, please contact Diane Quick in the CDO.

Summer 2018 Clerkship Opportunities at Public Counsel

Public Counsel has 9 exciting law projects and several subprojects that accept summer interns.  Our projects include a comprehensive children’s rights program that handles school condition and discipline matters, special education cases, and adoptions; a community development team that supports affordable housing development and assists non-profit and small businesses with a variety of transactional needs; an immigrants’ rights group that does compelling asylum work on behalf of victims of torture and political persecution; a homelessness prevention unit that defends unlawful detainer complaints, advocates for welfare benefits, and eliminates outstanding tickets and warrants for persons at-risk of homelessness; a holistic legal initiative that addresses the specific needs of low-income women and girls; a complex consumer fraud division that focuses on litigation and policies to prevent consumer victimization; and an impact litigation department (Opportunity Under Law) that addresses economic injustices on a national level through strategic lawsuits and other means to accomplish systemic reform.  Click here to learn more about each of our practice areas.

Public Counsel’s 2018 summer internship program will run for ten weeks, commencing on May 29, 2018, and ending on August 3, 2018. Both 1L’s and 2L’s are eligible for these internships.  Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Public Counsel seeks summer interns who share our commitment to economic and racial justice, and we seek to have an inclusive group of interns.  Although Public Counsel does not provide funding to law students for its summer program, please be sure to consult with your law school’s public interest program to learn more about available scholarships and financial awards that might support your summer internship.

To apply, please email a cover letter, resume, transcript (or list of grades), and writing sample to Sandra Madera. If you are interested in more than one project, then please list up to three of the projects you would like to work with in order of preference.  It is helpful to describe in your cover letter the reasons for your interest in the project for which you are applying. Please be sure to include the following in the subject line of your e-mail:  “Application for 2018 Public Counsel Summer Internship.”  Your application will not be considered if the requested application materials or your preference are omitted.

SCHOLARSHIP AND SUMMER CLERKSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

The Sarasota County Bar Association Committee on Diversity and Inclusion is now accepting applications for its annual minority summer law clerk and scholarship awards.

Any 1L, 2L or rising 3L student enrolled in an accredited law school who is a member of a minority class as defined by the Florida Bar is eligible to apply.   Selection is based on need, merit and other qualifying criteria noted on the application.  Preference will be given to those students who have ties to the Sarasota community and who have expressed or demonstrated a commitment to return to Sarasota to pursue his or her legal career upon graduation from law school.

Selected applicants will receive a tuition assistance scholarship in an amount of up to $5,000.00 (payable directly to the student’s law school), and, if summer employment in the Sarasota area has not already been secured, a paid summer law clerk position at a Sarasota  private law firm, government agency, non-profit or other entity that has agreed to employ the student for a minimum 10 weeks.  In addition to the rich legal employment experience, awardees become summer members of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and will regularly interface with members of the Judiciary, the Bar and other community leaders.

The Committee on Diversity and Inclusion endeavors to increase diversity in the SCBA so that its membership reflects the demographics of our community and state.  Accordingly, all scholarship recipients are mentored and encouraged to return to the Sarasota community for future employment upon law school graduation. Since 2007, the SCBA Committee on Diversity and Inclusion has awarded over $110,000 in minority law student scholarships.
