Epstein Becker Green is pleased to announce its 20th Annual Health Law Writing Competition. The competition is designed to encourage J.D. and LL.M. students in the preparation of scholarly papers on current topics of interest relating to health law. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows for the three best papers:
First Place: $4,000 Second Place: $2,000 Third Place: $500
Entrants should take advantage of the fact that health law is a very broad and diverse field, encompassing aspects of almost every area of law. Papers may address any traditional area of the law as applied to health care (e.g., antitrust, tax, corporate) or areas of law unique to health care (e.g., fraud and abuse, managed care, Medicare/Medicaid, clinical trials, telehealth/telemedicine). Entries ranked in the top 20 percent of all competition submissions will be considered for publication in the Annals of Health Law, which is published by the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

The Criminal Defense Trial Practice Institute, May 14-18, 2018.
The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia is pleased to present the 2018 Criminal Defense Trial Practice Institute (Institute). The Institute seeks to help students cultivate effective trial advocacy skills and explore indigent criminal defense work. The program consists of a week of workshops on how to conduct opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, and closing arguments. In addition, students will learn how to develop theories of defense, master the rules of evidence, and impeach witnesses at trial. At the end of the program, students will participate in full-length mock trials presided over by District of Columbia Superior Court judges.
The Institute is designed to support law students from traditionally underrepresented minority groups, students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, and/or students from law schools that lack criminal defense and trial advocacy training opportunities.
The Institute will be held May 14 – May 18, 2018. Each student is expected to commit to participating in the entire program, which also includes daily evening sessions. The program is free of charge to students, although students are expected to provide their own transportation and lodging.

In order to further outreach efforts to law students, the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (“ACEBC”) has adopted a program to connect interested law students with willing ACEBC members for purposes of asking questions about employee benefits as a practice area.
Are you a law student? The ACEBC Law Student Outreach provides connections to law students to help foster interest in employee benefits as a practice area. We connect interested law students with ACEBC members. Find out what day-to-day practice is like from an experienced employee benefits attorney. It’s a challenging and enjoyable practice area — we’ll share what we’ve learned and answer your questions.
How to get connected: If you are a law student interested in talking with an ACEBC member about employee benefits practice, send us an email with your name, law school, email address, and phone number. Feel free to specify if you are interested in a particular type of practice, such as in-house, government, law firm, not for profit, or teaching. Your information will be passed to an ACEBC member who will contact you. By contacting you, the member has agreed to one email exchange or telephone exchange about the area that you have selected (although, of course, you and your volunteer may agree to more discussions). Since 2005, the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (ACEBCE) has sponsored a writing competition for law students, to encourage them to learn about employee benefits. Papers may be on any topic in the employee benefits field. Up to two monetary prizes are offered, one funded by Susan Serota, in honor of her father, Sidney M. Perlstadt, an Emeritus Fellow, and the other funded by the College for 2016 by Dianne Bennett, in honor of Al (Alvin D.) Lurie, an Emeritus Fellow. Winners also receive an employee benefits treatise published by BNA Books. If deemed suitable by the editors, one or more of the winning papers may be published by the BNA Pension and Benefits Reporter or in the BNA Tax Management Compensation Planning Journal.
The College’s writing contest award winners are selected each year by the ACEBC Writing Contest Committee from among eligible submissions. Submissions have been received from a wide variety of law schools from across the nation.
Each year, the eligible submissions are circulated among a group of initial reviewers consisting of ACEBC Writing Committee members and other ACEBC Fellows who volunteer to perform that task. Each initial reviewer provides his or her evaluation on the papers on score sheets based upon the factors identified in the contest rules. Those factors are as follows: (i) Analysis (i.e., depth and creativity of legal analysis); (ii) Research (i.e., thoroughness of legal research); (iii) Writing (i.e., organization/writing style); (iv) Difficulty (i.e., difficulty of subject matter); (v) Policy (i.e., consideration of policy implications); (vi) Other factors; and (vii) Overall impression.
Three to five finalists are selected based on the committee’s evaluation of the initial reviewer’s comments. All of the papers selected as finalists are reviewed by the entire committee. Each committee member submits a score sheet ranking the finalist’s submission according to the same factors described above. The Chair compiles a composite score sheet showing the rankings of all committee members. This composite score sheet forms the basis for the committee’s final deliberations.
The writing competition has been successful in many ways but one measure is that several of the competitors have gone on to practice employee benefit law after their graduation from law school.

OPEN TO: Any J.D. and graduate (L.L.M. or S.J.D.) law students enrolled at any time between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2018.

The American Bankruptcy Institute (“ABI”) is pleased to invite students to participate in its Tenth Annual ABI Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition. First, Second and Third Place prizes will be awarded.
WRITING TOPIC:
We invite papers on current issues regarding bankruptcy jurisdiction, bankruptcy litigation, or evidence in bankruptcy cases or proceedings. The paper may address business or consumer cases and may include matters such as bankruptcy sales, plan confirmation and other topics that involve jurisdiction, litigation or evidence in the bankruptcy courts.
DATES OF COMPETITION:
Papers must be submitted no later than March 1, 2018. Papers need to have been written since the close of last year’s competition (anytime after March 1, 2017). We encourage those professors teaching bankruptcy law classes during the fall semester to let students know about the competition so that they can prepare papers during their fall classes for submission. Our hope is that the competition will dovetail nicely with any fall legal writing or advanced bankruptcy courses so that students can satisfy one of their writing requirements while creating an entry for the competition.
COMPETITION AWARDS:
Available awards include $4,000 in prize money and publication in the prestigious ABI Journal and ABI committee newsletters. Winners of the competition will be announced in April 2018. We will also provide one-year ABI memberships to all students who participate.
COMPETITION RULES:
Papers must comply with the guidelines for submissions found here. Only one paper may be submitted per student.
SUBMITTING YOUR PAPER:

2018 Alford Excellence Award:
On May 16, 2018, the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section (“MJL Section”) of the Delaware State Bar Association will hold its annual Judge Haile L. Alford Memorial Breakfast. The event is held in honor of Haile L. Alford, the first African-American female judge in the State of Delaware. Judge Alford was appointed by Governor Mike Castle in 1992 and served on the bench until her untimely death in 2003 at the age of 54.
During the Alford Memorial Breakfast, the MJL Section intends to grant the 2018 Alford Excellence Award, a $3,000 scholarship, to at least three future practitioners who will sit for the July 2018 Delaware Bar Examination.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Application materials include: (1) the 2018 Alford Excellence Award Application, (2) a personal essay (1000 word limit) and (3) at least one letter of recommendation.
Part I:
2018 Alford Excellence Award Application: Each applicant must submit the Application to highlight their superior academic credentials, leadership qualities, commitment to community service and intent to actively practice law in the State of Delaware. Each applicant must complete all the requested information in the Application and include copies of a transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable) and a resume. Applicants may also include copies of other relevant documents such as awards, recognition certificates, etc.
Part II:
Personal Essay: Each applicant must complete a persuasive essay, highlighting his/her demonstrated leadership abilities, commitment to community service, personal barriers which have been overcome and/or provides examples of academic achievements, awards and certificates, personal qualities and character. In addition, applicants MUST address why they desire to actively practice law in Delaware and/or their ties/commitment to the State of Delaware. As a reminder, this scholarship is intended to help supplement the costs of sitting for the DELAWARE BAR.
Part III:
Letter of Recommendation: Each applicant must submit at least one letter of recommendation which highlights how the applicant meets any/all of the criteria mentioned above.
Part IV:
Each scholarship recipient will be required to submit proof of a submitted application to sit for the 2018 Delaware bar by May 15, 2018. Failure to do so will lead to forfeiture of the scholarship. The Tallahassee Barristers Association (Barristers) is a voluntary legal organization that focuses on empowering and supporting minority lawyers in the greater Tallahassee area. The Barristers established the Robert Woolfork Scholarship Foundation to support Florida law students and encourage innovative thinking on diversity, race, and the law.
Each year, we award scholarships to students during our annual Scholarship Luncheon. Finalists for this year’s scholarship essay contest will be invited to the 2018 Scholarship Luncheon being held on February 28, 2018, in Tallahassee, Florida, where they will be invited to make a brief presentation of their essay before the Barristers and the legal community. The winner will receive a prize scholarship in the amount of $1,500 that will be presented at the Luncheon.

Given the current political climate, how important is it to have diversity amongst members of the judiciary?
Eligibility:
Essays will be accepted from students enrolled at any Florida law school during the 2017-2018 school year. Applicants must submit their own work and must not have submitted the same essay for another scholarship contest. Students may utilize historical data, court opinions (including dissents), pending cases and other literature to support their arguments.
Format:
Essays must be in 12-point font, double spaced, Times New Roman font, with two spaces following each period. All margins must be at least one inch. Research and citations are suggested, but not required. Entries must not exceed five pages, including notes.
