Passport to Practice – An Upskilling Bootcamp for the New Lawyer – Launching on June 24th!

Launching on June 24! #PassportToPractice—a free virtual bootcamp for law students and grads to build rarely taught skills. Work for three weeks with powerhouse professionals and academics, earn a certificate!

Are you a current law student?   A recent law graduate?   Do you want to enhance your resume?

You are invited to Passport to Practice to improve your knowledge, skills, and story. We believe our summer 2020 program—the result of a collaboration of powerhouse professionals and academics—can help your career.

Consider it the good stuff you (likely) didn’t learn about in law school, and (definitely) won’t studying for the bar exam, but (really) should know if you want to navigate and succeed in the ever-changing legal landscape.

This program is free. We only ask that you commit to the program and provide feedback.

To succeed as a professional in the 21st century, you need to be prepared to answer YES to questions such as: 

  • Do you understand how the legal services ecosystem is changing, both pre- and post-pandemic?
  • Do you know how to seek and use feedback to improve your work (and excel in your career)?
  • Can you speak intelligently about innovation and technology in the legal profession?
  • Do you understand how multi-disciplinary teamwork and problem solving is vital to the practice of law?
  • Are you clear on the value you can bring to the profession (or do you at least know the secret handshake)?

PASSPORT TO PRACTICE SUMMARY

  • 3 weeks (with sessions on Tue, Wed & Thu)
  • 10-12 hours of virtual sessions/week
  • Sessions will be recorded for later viewing
  • 4-8 hours of prep & review/week
  • Certificate of Completion

CALL FOR EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS AND SKADDEN FELLOWSHIP PROPOSALS AT PUBLIC COUNSEL

Public Counsel is the largest pro bono public interest law firm in the country. Founded in 1970, it is dedicated to advancing equal justice under law and addressing economic, racial, and other inequities by delivering free legal and social services to the most vulnerable members of our community. Public Counsel operates eight legal projects: Children’s Rights, Community Development, Consumer Rights, Homelessness Prevention, Immigrants’ Rights, Veterans’ Rights, the Audrey Irmas Project for Women & Girls’ Rights, and our impact litigation project, Opportunity Under Law. Public Counsel has a full-time staff of over 130. We seek to have a racially inclusive staff.

OPPORTUNITY:

Public Counsel is seeking to host law students or recent graduate for Equal Justice Works or Skadden Fellowships to begin in the fall of 2021. This year Public Counsel will consider fellowship proposals limited to those which fall in the following areas:

  • Children’s Rights, especially focused on juvenile justice, education rights, child welfare, and/or children and youth with
  • Homelessness Prevention
  • Opportunity Under Law: projects centered around impact litigation in areas related to economic justice, education equity, criminalization of poverty, children’s rights, or immigrants’ rights.

Applications for those proposing 2020 Equal Justice Works or Skadden fellowship projects should be submitted by August 1, 2020. We do not have an application form separate from those used by the organizations that fund the fellowships. Students who are interested in a fellowship at Public Counsel should send their resume and a brief description of their proposed directly with the Directing Attorneys of the Public Counsel project you wish to work with. Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI), a Chicago-based nonprofit law and policy center, seeks a recent law or public policy graduate to serve as the Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellow for one year, renewable for a second year, beginning in Summer or Fall 2021.

The Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellowship offers Fellows the opportunity to develop the experience, skills and network critical to a rewarding career in public interest advocacy. Fellows have gone on to pursue successful careers in affordable housing law, legal aid, civil rights advocacy, no n- pro fit leadership and government.

For over 50 years, BPI has worked to create a just society. We have a long track record of innovative, effective advocacy across a broad range of social justice issues. Our work today focuses on addressing the challenges of poverty and racial and economic inequity, increasing housing and educational opportunity building vital communities, strengthening early  childhood  learning,  reforming  our  criminal  justice system, and improving governmental integrity and efficiency. BPI takes a multi-disciplinary approach, including legal and policy research, policy development, organizing, and litigation. A collaborative and stimulating workplace, BPI is committed to offering opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to work that advances a just society.

REQUIREMENTS of the Fellowship are:

  • Either a JD or MA/MS in public policy or related field (by Fellowship start)
  • An enterprising mindset, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a passion for social justice
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in one of BPl’s program areas
  • Accomplished oral and writing skills
  • Strong academic record
  • Initiative, creativity and flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of organizations, constituent groups, government agencies, and civic leaders

Fellows receive an annual salary of $54,000 with medical and dental coverage. Debt service on law school or graduate school loans for the duration of the Fellowship may be available, based on need.

The Career Development Office (CDO) is excited to announce the launch of the CDO Summer Series 2020. Please join us for a series of individual virtual programs designed to foster your professional development this summer. All programs will be available on Zoom and will feature guest speakers from the Miami legal community. Each program is scheduled for 30 minutes and you are encouraged to ask questions of the respective speakers beforehand. Detailed information on the program and the guest speakers as well as instructions for viewing the program and submitting questions will be provided before each session.

The first program, “How to Have a Successful Judicial Internship this Summer,” will take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 5:00 pm and will feature guest speaker Kelly Shami, Esq. (’16). Kelly is currently serving as a judicial clerk for U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom in the Southern District of Florida.
