The Florida Bar’s Business Law Section and the Dade County Bar Association’s Business Law Committee present “Demystifying the Securities Laws: A Practitioners Approach to Getting the Deal Done,” Part 6-B. This event will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 from 12:15 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. The 1.0 hour Florida CLE will be presented by Alan H. Aronson of Akerman Senterfitt. The 2011 George J. Joseph Education Law Writing Award

The 2011 George J. Joseph Education Law Writing Award is sponsored by the Education Law Association in cooperation with the Journal of law and Education. 

The purpose of this national competition is to generate increased interest in and recognition of education law among not only graduate students in education schools but also, in particular, to students in law schools.

Criteria:

  • Doctoral dissertations are not eligible; they are subject to a different ELA award. However, manuscripts that synthesize dissertations may be submitted, provided that they meet the specifications.
  • Subject matter: one or more legal issues within any of the various contexts of education, including public and private K-12 schools and institutions of higher education, especially current and emerging issues in elementary and secondary public education. 
  • Status: not previously published and not under review elsewhere for publication. 
  • Format: double-spaced, with 12-point font and one-inch margins, with footnotes on each respective page (rather than at the end) carefully conforming to Blue Book citation style.
  • Authorship: single-authored by a law student (not LL.M.) or a student in a graduate program in education (not postdoctoral). 
  • Length: between 35 and 55 pages including the footnotes.

Procedure: 

The author must submit the manuscript via email (as an attachment in Word format) by 4:00 p.m. EST on July 1, 2011 directly to the chair of the Joseph Award Committee with “Joseph Award” in the subject line.

Roundtable Invitation: The Implications of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act on Social Media Sites

The Intellectual Property Law Association of Florida is hosting “The Implications of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act on Social Media Sites,” hosted by Keith Lipscomb, Steven Eisenberg, and Deborah Baker.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Thirty Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans will be awarded in 2012 on the basis of a single national competition. Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study – in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States.  Each award is for up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and up to $20,000 in tuition support for each year of graduate study supported, a total of as much as $90,000.  

The deadline for submission of completed applications is November 1, 2011.

To be eligible, you must be:

  • A New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country).
  • Not yet 31 years old, as of the application deadline.
  • A college senior or holder of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Not beyond your second year – if already enrolled — in the graduate degree program for which you request support.

Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment.  The program values a commitment to the constitution and the bill of rights. The program promotes a strong sense of community among fellows and alumni through fall conferences for fellows and numerous events for fellows and alumni held throughout the country. The top 77 applicants will be designated “finalists” and will be asked to appear for interviews in New York City or Los Angeles in late-January of 2012. Reasonable expenses will be covered by the Fellowship Program.  The 30 fellowship winners, selected from among the 77 finalists, will be announced in February of 2012.

The two-year Echoing Green Fellowship program provides start-up capital and technical assistance to help new leaders launch their organizations and build capacity. The Fellowship offers:

•    A stipend of $60,000 for individuals ($90,000 for 2-person partnerships) paid in four equal installments over two years

The Echoing Green Fellowship selection process is highly competitive. Applicants progress through three application stages with eliminations after each phase. By the end of the process, Echoing Green will have narrowed the 2500+ applications to 12-20 fellowships. The 2011 Fellows will begin their fellowship July 2011 and continue until June 30, 2013.

The Deadline for the Palm Beach County Diversity Internship Program Has Been Extended

The deadline to apply for the Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Diversity Internship Program has been extended until Friday, June 3, 2011.  The internship program runs from June 20th-July 29th.  Diverse law students in the top 50% of their class who want to gain valuable work experience in Palm Beach County this summer should apply for a position.

The National LGBT Bar Association is Now Seeking Candidates for Positions at the American Bar Association

The LGBT Bar is now accepting statements of interest from individuals who wish to represent the organization in various positions at the American Bar Association. The National LGBT Bar Association is an official affiliate of the ABA and, as such, holds a seat in the ABA House of Delegates. In addition, the LGBT Bar liaises in an official capacity with many key sections within the ABA — including three seats in the Young Lawyers Division (YLD), a seat within the Law Student Division and positions on the Coordinating Committee on HIV/AIDS, the Commission on Women in the Profession, as well as others.
