Becoming a Practising Law Institute (“PLI”) student rep can be a great boost for your resume (PLI is well known and highly regarded by law firms and corporations). And it can be a great way to be of service to your school and colleagues. Student reps not only help plan Patent Bar presentations at your school, but can also help keep an eye out for other ways PLI can be of service: scholarships, free IP books for clinics, etc.
Aside from the intangible benefits of representing a highly regarded nonprofit institution, networking with your IP professors and fellow IP students, and the like, student reps get money off their Patent Bar Review course price (or other PLI resources) and scholarships to our other programs.

The IFA Educational Foundation and DLA Piper US LLP have teamed up to sponsor the Franchise Law Diversity Scholarship Award. The goal of this program is to recognize and support academic achievement among diverse law students. Additionally, the program seeks to encourage diverse law students to enroll in courses that are oriented towards franchising.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible for the scholarship award, students must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school. Applicants must have 2L or 3L status during the period of the scholarship, and they must be enrolled in at least one course oriented towards franchise law (e.g., Torts, Unfair Trade Practices, Trade Secrets, Antitrust, Trademarks, Contracts, Agency, Securities). Applicants must be considered a member of a diverse group (African American, American Indian, Hispanic American, Asian American, or Gay/Lesbian).
What Does the Award Offer
One award, in the amount of $4,000, will be presented annually. The award will be issued to the law school to reduce the amount of tuition. This scholarship may not be used by the selected student’s law school to reduce the amount of any institutional financial aid. In addition to the financial award, the selected student will be invited to various functions, such as the IFA Annual Convention or other meetings, sponsored by DLA Piper US LLP. This will give the student an opportunity to get involved with the franchise law community and meet several franchise lawyers.
How Do You Get Started
Students should complete the application form and submit it to the IFA Educational Foundation, along with a certified copy of their academic transcript, and a typed essay explaining their interest in franchise law. Students should also submit two letters of recommendation from professors, school advisors, or other individuals who can attest to the applicant’s interest in franchise law. Applicants must describe their current academic course(s) in the space provided on the application form.
Application Deadline
All scholarship applications and materials must be postmarked no later than October 15, 2011 to be considered for the Fall scholarship award.

ABA OnRamps allows law students to attend ABA conferences and have their registration fee waived in exchange for their services. This is a great way to serve the profession while learning valuable legal info not often taught in law school.
Students are not expected to attend the entire conference. Instead, you can volunteer in shifts based on your availability. When not volunteering, students are free to either attend the conference or return to campus for class if necessary. Plus, volunteers are free to attend all conference receptions. With the number of practicing attorneys expected, this will be an exciting networking opportunity.
Duties will vary for each event. Primarily, student volunteers help prepare conference materials, aid with various registration tables, and attend panels to collect CLE registration forms. Again, outside their volunteer commitment, students are free to attend or free to leave.
Any ABA members who would like to volunteer must email their name, address, phone, email, ABA# and the days and times you are able to volunteer to the Law Student Division Delegate in charge of the ABA OnRamps initiative this year. Non-ABA members may also volunteer; however, preference will be given to ABA members. Space is available on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Florida Bar’s Business Law Section and the Dade County Bar Association’s Business Law Committee present “Demystifying the Securities Laws: A Practitioners Approach to Getting the Deal Done,” Part 8-A. This is a reminder that submissions are now being accepted for consideration for publication in the November issue of the National Law Review (NLR).
Please note that although students are encouraged to submit articles addressing Health & Labor Law they may also submit entries covering current issues related to other areas of the law. The deadline for entries is Monday, October 17th. The winning articles from this month’s NLR 2011 Law Student Writing Competition will be published online in November 2011. The top article(s) chosen will be featured on the NLR home page. Up to 5 runner-up articles may also be posted in the NLR searchable database.
Why Students Should Submit Articles:
- Students have the opportunity to publicly display their legal knowledge and skills.
- The student’s photo, biography and contact information will be posted with each article, allowing for professional recognition and exposure.
- Winning articles are published alongside those written by respected attorneys from Am Law 200 and other prominent firms as well as from other respected professional associations.
