John Arrastia Speaks About Conquering Your Fear of Arbitration

John Arrastia, a panelist with the American Arbitration Association and partner at Arrastia & Capote, has arbitrated over 250 cases and written various articles on arbitration and litigation.

On Thursday, March 15, 2012, John Arrastia will provide practical tips from the perspective of an arbitrator and litigator on drafting arbitration clauses, using arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution tool, and saving time and money by arbitrating.

Networking and registration begin at 11:45 a.m. Luncheon begins at 12:00 p.m.

The City of Chicago Law Department Seeks Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior

Description:

Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior, Department of Law, Torts Division

The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior in its Torts Division. The Torts Division represents the City and its employees in personal injury, property damage, workers compensation claims and wrongful death lawsuits. The types of cases handled by the Division on behalf of its client departments and employees range from slip-and-fall accidents on City property to complex litigation arising from alleged medical malpractice, police pursuits and misconduct, roadway design defects, wrongful demolition, and 9-1-1 misconduct. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior’s work will focus in the Division’s Personal Injury Unit and will likely include supervising the work of other attorneys in the Unit. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior is expected to work with minimal supervision and assist other attorneys with tactical and strategic issues at all stages of the litigation process. The Senior Counsel conducts and supervises discovery, coordinates work with department investigators and liaisons responsible for gathering case evidence, and serves as lead attorney at trial. In addition to other responsibilities, the Senior Counsel is expected to maintain a personal docket and to try cases.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school on or before May 2001, admission to the Illinois Bar (or another state bar having reciprocity with Illinois), a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a licensed, practicing attorney, and a minimum of 10 jury trials in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Familiarity with the Illinois Governmental and Governmental Employees Tort Immunity Act and other statutory and common law immunities and defenses; significant writing experience and motions practice; exceptional organizational skills; excellent critical and analytical thinking and negotiation skills; the ability to work well with others; demonstrated leadership and initiative on assigned tasks; and demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, monitor and control workflow deadlines.

There is a two-step application process for this position.

Step One: To apply for this position, you must submit an on-line application on the City of Chicago’s webpage by March 22, 2012.

Step Two: In addition to the on-line application, the following materials must be submitted in hard copy to the City of Chicago Department of Law’s Legal Recruiter, 30 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 1640, Chicago, IL60602:

– cover letter quantifying how you meet the above criteria;

– copy of your resume;

– law school transcript;

– two writing samples; and

– copy of your ARDC card.

The foregoing materials must be submitted in person or postmarked on or before March 27, 2012; late submissions shall result in your application not being considered for the position.
