Monday, November 5th, Public Interest Lecture Series, 12:30 – 2 pm, Room A-110A. These informal luncheons are designed to allow students to share their aspirations, ask questions and learn about the myriad opportunities in public service and public interest law. The second Public Interest Lecture Series for the 2012 Fall Semester features Elizabeth Schwartz, JD ’97. Ms. Schwartz is in her 15th year of law practice and emphasizes representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) community in family formation and dissolution matters. She serves as President-Elect of the Miami Beach Bar Association and is the Chair of the City of Miami Beach’s Human Rights Committee. Ms. Schwartz has served as pro bono counsel in several cases seeking to overturn Florida’s uniquely bigoted 1977 ban forbidding gays and lesbians from adopting children. Tuesday, October 30th, Panel Discussion: “Housing Under Water,” 12:30 pm, F-408. Educate and inform the local community of the vital roles that nonprofits and community development corporations have in providing and increasing affordable housing opportunities. Explore legal issues representing low-income and traditionally disenfranchised families in foreclosure proceedings. Tuesday, October 30th, Implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: The Case of Trinidad and Tobago, 12:30 pm, D201, Reading Room. Join Professor Kele Stewart, Professor of Clinical Legal Education and Co-Director of the Miami Law Children & Youth Law Clinic, for a lunch discussion on abused, abandoned and neglected children in the Caribbean.

Friday, November 2nd, Canes Carnival, 2 pm, Bricks. Please join Bar & Gavel as they host Canes Carnival. Featuring games, music, giveaways, UM Cheerleaders, and much more for the 5th graders of McCrary Elementary. Each student organization will have a station with an activity for the children. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). VITA volunteers help people with basic tax returns, particularly those with moderate income and fixed income, individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking and elderly taxpayers. Empowered Youth. Please join the Child Advocacy and Family Society in mentoring and tutoring the young men of Empowered Youth. Mentors are needed on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Belafonte Tacolcy Center in Liberty City. Tutors are needed on Saturdays at 11:00 AM on the Bricks.
