Amnesty International is Seeking a Senior Policy Adviser for New York

Amnesty International is seeking a Senior Policy Adviser to develop and apply policies on key human rights issues in a way that maximizes the impact of their work, furthers their strategic objectives, upholds Amnesty International’s values and principles and contributes to the collective work of the Law and Policy Program. 

As Senior Policy Adviser, you will play a key role in working with country and thematic researchers, advocates and campaigners in the IS and sections and structures on the application and development of AI’s human rights policies with regard to research projects, advocacy initiatives and campaigns. The Senior Policy Adviser will also lead in developing and delivering Amnesty International’s contribution to particular standard-setting initiatives within the UN and regional human rights systems. This Senior Policy Adviser post will be responsible for specific areas of work and develop projects to promote human rights policy development that are designed to have a strong impact in promoting human rights for individuals whose rights are under attack. The post holder will work with legal and policy advisers and assistant advisers to ensure effective, coherent and timely approvals and consultations.

You will have significant professional experience in human rights, including field research and have extensive knowledge of law, politics, international relations or other fields related to human rights. You will have the ability to develop coherent policies based on a detailed understanding of human rights principles and AI’s core values. You will have demonstrated ability to lead policy development work in a complex political environment and have recognized expertise in one or more of the following fields of human rights: discrimination, freedom of expression, the human rights impact of development, the human rights of indigenous peoples, and gender analysis and the human rights of women, including sexual and reproductive rights.

You will have demonstrated excellent research, analytical and writing skills, including recent relevant publication. You will have extensive experience of managing people, including at a distance; excellent analytical skills; good interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent communication skills. You will have experience of planning, organizing and prioritizing work under pressure and to deadlines. You will also have excellent external representational skills. You will have outstanding written and verbal English skills and the ability to work to a high professional level in Spanish.

This position is in Amnesty International’s New York office. The closing date is October 1, 2013.

The Kozyak Minority Mentoring Picnic is on November 9, 2013

The Kozyak Minority Mentoring Picnic is a premier event currently in its 10th year. The picnic has grown exponentially each year and is well attended by many judges, established lawyers and law students from every school in Florida. The picnic is sponsored by many businesses, multiple voluntary bar associations, a bank and numerous law firms. Many sponsors rent tents where it is easy for students to meet lawyers, judges and potential employees. They have a “Leaders and Legends” tent where some of the  best lawyers in the country have shared their experiences. For example, former Attorney General Janet Reno, ABA President Stephen Zack and Florida Court Supreme Justice Peggy Quince and Barbara Pariente have led discussions.  Please check out the photos, videos and articles to get a better feel for the picnic.  It is an unusual, fantastic and fun networking event. The picnic is a family friendly event. There is an entire section dedicated to children with rock climbing walls, ring toss, games, face painting and much more. They also have  dominoes tournament, a volleyball tournament and a dunk tank. There is an extensive assortment of food and a DJ spinning tunes and introducing lawyers and judges.

The picnic is held at Amelia Earhart Park located in Miami at 401 East 65 Street, Hialeah, FL33013. The 10th Annual Minority Mentoring Picnic will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013 starting at noon.

Although the picnic is free, there is a small $10 fee for parking, donations and sponsorships to offset the costs are welcome.  Click here for a park map and parking information.

Every student, lawyer and judge who attends the picnic will have an opportunity to get a mentor or mentee. “Need Mentor” and “Need Mentee” badges will be handed out and introductions will be made.

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI) Announces The 2013-14 Beveridge & Diamond Constitutional Environmental Law Writing Competition

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI) is pleased to announce the 2013-14 Beveridge & Diamond Constitutional Environmental Law Writing Competition.

Organized by ELI and the National Association of Environmental Law Societies (NAELS), this annual competition invites law students from across the country to submit papers exploring current issues of constitutional environmental law. Their goal is to inform the ongoing debate about the constitutional legitimacy of environmental laws and to recognize students who have advanced the state of scholarship through original analysis of cutting-edge topics. The winner receives a $2000 cash prize, public recognition, an offer of publication in ELI’s flagship journal, the Environmental Law Reporter (ELR), and a one-year individual membership to ELI.

Last year’s competition produced winner James E. Flynn III of GeorgiaStateUniversity. His article, “The Fraudulent Misrepresentation of Climate Science,” will appear in the December 2013 issue of ELR.

Simon Wright, partner with JA Kemp in London, England, will speak to IPLAF about the European Unitary Patent System. Simon has over 25 years’ experience of patent work, including drafting and filing patent applications throughout the world, but in particular before the European Patent Office (EPO). Simon handles prosecution, as well as opposition and appeal work, primarily in the life sciences.

His technical work has covered pharmaceuticals and vaccines, insulin inhalers and fermentation technology. He also handles cases on gene therapy, personalised nutrition, biofuels, liposome technology, prognostic cancer markers and stem cells. Simon’s clients range from European multinational companies to small UK academic organizations.

Simon was involved in the seminal EPO Board of Appeal Decision concerning a contraceptive method involving the administration of LHRH to women. He also acted as an expert witness, and so gave evidence to the UK High Court, in the HGS vs. Eli Lilly litigation, which led to the first ever Supreme Court decision on a patent matter (concerning industrial applicability).

University of Miami School of Law students and alumni are cordially invited to attend the University of Miami Career Expo taking place on Thursday, September 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the BankUnited Center on the Coral Gables campus.

The Career Expo has traditionally attracted companies from various industries such as healthcare, financial services, banking, retail and merchandising, government, telecommunications, and marketing. This expo is specially designed to expose students and alumni to a broad spectrum of career paths, as well as provide them with opportunities to secure internships and full-time jobs. This is not a legal industry expo and no law firms will be participating. This is, however, a great opportunity to connect with employers from other industries.

There is no required registration to attend the expo. Students and alumni must come professionally dressed.  Bring plenty of copies of your resume and your Cane Card. Students not professionally dressed and/or without their Cane Card will not be admitted.

American Indian Law Review 2013-2014 Writing Competition Rules – Deadline is January 31, 2014

The American Indian Law Review (AILT) is pleased to announce its annual writing competition for 2013-2014.

Topics:

Papers will be accepted on any issue concerning American Indian law or indigenous peoples.  However, topics recently published in the American Indian Law Review will not be favored.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to students enrolled in J.D. or graduate law programs at accredited law schools in the United States and Canada as of the competition deadline of Jan. 31, 2014.  Editors of the American Indian Law Review are not eligible to compete.

Awards:

The first place winner receives $1,000 and publication in the American Indian Law Review, an official periodical of the University of Oklahoma College of Law with international distribution.  The second place winner receives $500, and third place receives $250.

The three winning authors will be recognized on the masthead of the American Indian Law Review, and will receive copies of Felix S. Cohen’s Handbook of Federal Indian Law, provided by LexisNexis.

Deadline:

All electronic entries must be received no later than 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 31, 2014.  Any hardcopy entries must be postmarked by that date.  Entries will be acknowledged upon receipt.  All entries become the property of the American Indian Law Review.

Judges:

Papers will be judged by members of the legal profession with an interest in American Indian Law and by the editors of the American Indian Law Review.

Standards:

Papers will be judged on the basis of originality and timeliness of topic, knowledge and use of applicable legal principles, proper and articulate analysis of the issues, use of authorities and extent of research, logic and reasoning in analysis, ingenuity and ability to argue by analogy, clarity and organization, correctness of format and citations, grammar and writing style, and strength and logic of conclusions.

Form:

Entries must be a minimum of 20 double-spaced pages in length and a maximum of 50 double-spaced pages in length excluding footnotes or endnotes.  All citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (19th ed.).  The body of the email must contain the author’s name, social security number, school, expected year of graduation, current address, permanent address, and email address.  Inquiries may be replied to by email. No identifying marks (name, school, etc.) should appear on the paper itself.  All entries must have only one author. Entries must be unpublished, not currently submitted for publication elsewhere, and not currently entered in other writing competitions. Papers entered in the American Indian Law Review writing competition may not be submitted for consideration to any other publication until such time as winning entrants are announced.  Any entries not fully in accord with required form will be ineligible for consideration.

Submission:

Submissions may be emailed to the American Indian Law Review by the competition deadline.  Entries may be sent as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or PDF documents.  Although email submissions are preferred, hardcopies are acceptable.  If submitting hardcopies, mail them to AILR Writing Competition, American Indian Law Review, 300 Timberdell Road, Norman, OK 73019. Please send an email on or before the deadline to notify the AILR that you are sending a hardcopy submission.

Attention 3Ls: The David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship is a distinguished postgraduate fellowship in health policy. The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for promising students to learn about the political system through direct exposure to the roles of both the public and private sectors in health policy development.  The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend and related expenses for a twelve-month period from July to June. Divercycles: A Bike Ride for Immigration Reform with the ACLU of Florida – Saturday, September 14th 

People in Miami came here from all over the world, and any decision made about our immigration system will have a huge impact on our community. Join the ACLU in a route stretching from Little Havana to Little Haiti to celebrate the diversity of our community and advocate for reform to help those living in the shadows fully enjoy the promise of America. There will be a stop at the ACLU of Florida mural, “I Am Here,” inspired by the real stories of Floridians dealing with our harsh immigration policies. The artist, Ruben Ubiera, will be at the mural to share details about its interactivity, and José Machado, one of the people represented in the piece, will be sharing his immigration story with the riders. The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade Screening of Playground O Cinema Miami Shores – Wednesday, October 23rd 

The Women’s Fund presents a powerful film about the sexual trafficking of underage girls called Playground: the child sex trade in AMERICA . 2013 Arsht Ethics Film Series: Glengarry Glen Ross – Tuesday, September 17th 

Adrienne Arsht, the UM Ethics Program, School of Communications, and the Alumni Association are kicking off a provocative film series. Each film is followed by a lively debate. Glengarry Glen Ross is a 1992 American drama, adapted by David Mamet from his 1984 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony- winning play with the same name. The film depicts two days in the lives of four real estate salesmen and how they become desperate when the corporate office sends a trainer to “motivate” them by announcing that, in one week, all except the top salesmen will be fired. The screening will take place at UM’s Bill Cosford Cinema at 6:30PM and is free to the UM community.

Public Interest Lecture Series – Wednesday, September 18 

Each year, the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center invites attorneys to share their experiences working in the public interest with students. The first speaker will be Betsy Havens, an EJW Fellow at Florida Legal Services who assists disabled children to obtain Medicaid coverage. This is a great opportunity for law students interact with advocates in a small group setting. RSVP now. Limited to15 spots.
