What is DIVEBAR?

DiveBar is a bar association composed of legal professionals that promotes education and awareness about coral reefs and the marine environment through scuba diving, philanthropic activities, and learning experiences. In the past year, they have:

– Traveled to Belize to dive with whale sharks

– Explored some of the world’s largest artificial reefs in the Florida Keys

– Gone diving in the Bahamas with lemon sharks and tiger sharks

Some of their philanthropic achievements include:

– Joining the world renowned biologists at the University of Miami’s RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program on an expedition to tag and release sharks for research and conservation

– Partnering with Nova Southeastern Oceanographic Center to support coral research and restoration through the sponsorship and development of a new DiverBar Reef in South Florida

– Pairing with the Diveheart Foundation, an organization that builds confidence and independence in people with disabilities through scuba diving

U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Solicitor General Bristow Fellowship Program

Every year, the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) accepts applications for one-year Bristow Fellowships. Bristow Fellows assist OSG attorneys in drafting briefs in opposition to certiorari filed against the government in the Supreme Court of the United States, preparing petitions for certiorari and briefs on the merits in Supreme Court cases, preparing recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding authorization of government appeals in the lower courts and assisting in the preparation of oral arguments in the Supreme Court. OSG usually selects four Bristow Fellows each year.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be law school graduates with excellent academic records. They typically come to the Fellowship after completion of a one-year judicial clerkship, most frequently with a federal appellate court judge. OSG receives applications from a diverse group of graduates from law schools throughout the United States.

The Fellowship has a one-year term that cannot lead directly to employment in the Solicitor General’s Office. The salary is established at the GS-12 level.

Application Process:

Applications for Bristow Fellowships are accepted between July 15 and September 1 of the preceding year. Fellows are appointed for a one-year period starting in July or August of each year. Fellowship selections will be announced no later than December of the application submission year. All application materials must be postmarked no later than September 1, 2014 to be considered.

Application Materials Required:

  1. Cover letter containing a statement of interest;
  2. Resume;
  3. Official law school transcript;
  4. Three letters from references familiar with the applicant’s work and abilities; and
  5. Writing sample.

All materials should be enclosed in one package, including letters of reference.

The Richmond Journal of Law and Technology 2014 Student Law and Technology Writing Competition

The Richmond Journal of Law and Technology is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2014 Student Law and Technology Writing Competition.  From now until midnight EST on Friday, October 3, 2014, all law students across the country will be eligible to compete in the writing competition for cash prizes and a chance to be published in a future issue of the Journal.

The entries must focus on topics at the intersection of technology and the law.  The first place prize is $1,500 and the second place prize is $700.  Additionally, one student from the University of Richmond will be awarded the Rick Klau prize of $300.

In order for an article to be properly considered, it must be submitted according to the guidelines provided below.

Submission Guidelines: 

  • Papers must be written independently
  • Only students enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school’s J.D. program as of January 1, 2015 may participate.
  • The topic of the paper MUST deal with a topic at the intersection of both law and technology.
  • Papers that have been submitted to or published by a student publication are not acceptable for submission to the contest.
  • Papers submitted must not exceed 30 pages in length and should be formatted as follows: using size 12 Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and 1-inch margins on all sides.  Submissions may not be in .pdf format.
  • Citations for the paper must be in compliance with the rules set out in The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 19th ed.
  • An entry form must be included with each submission, a copy of the entry form is available on the Journal‘s website.

All entries for the 2014 Student Law and Technology Writing Competition must be submitted via e-mail by Friday, October 3, 2014 at midnight EST and themail submissions must mail address.

2014 EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS CONFERENCE AND CAREER FAIR

Equal Justice Works (EJW) invites you to join them for the 2014 Conference and Career Fair!

Each year, the EJW Conference and Career Fair brings together 1,200 law students with more than 125 public interest employers from around the country under one roof.

The EJW annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country.  More than 1,200 students from 165 law schools attend for two days of interviews, workshops, networking and other career opportunities.  Public interest employers conduct interviews for internship and full-time positions and meet with students in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities.  The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and more.

NEW AMERICORPS JD OPENINGS – JULY DEADLINE

The AmeriCorps JD program has some additional slots available to start this month. Through AmeriCorps JD, law students focusing on any area of civil public interest law can earn a $1,175 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. AmeriCorps JD is also an exciting way to get connected to the various resources that Equal Justice Works offers to public interest law students.

AmeriCorps JD is looking for students who:

  • Can begin service in July 2014; and
  • Can complete 300 hours of service in a 12 month period (by July 2015).

Service includes training and substantive work, and can include research or additional projects for an internship even though a student may not physically be in the office past the summer months.

Time is of the essence — students must start this month! If you are a law student currently at or planning an internship at an organization (including legal aid, public defender, nonprofit organizations, or local, county or state government agencies), please think of applying to AmeriCorps JD today.
