Tuesday, March 27th, Guardian ad Litem Info Session, 12 pm, 601 NW 1 Ct., Miami: Each day children are removed from homes that are physically and emotionally unhealthy. Outstanding Community Partner Award nominations are being accepted! Nominate your supervising attorney to be recognized for their outstanding mentorship and contributions to the legal community at the Public Interest Recognition Reception on April 12th. Community partners, external to the Miami Law community, are eligible. Submit a nomination via email to UMHOPE in 500 words or less describing why your supervising attorney is deserving of this recognition.

Public Interest Service Student Awards: Nominations are now being accepted for the Exemplary Service to the Poor and Innovative Service in the Public Interest Awards. For descriptions of these awards and details about the nomination/application process, please see the attached or visit the HOPE website. Nominations are due by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 21st via hand-delivery to the HOPE office or via email to UMHOPE.

Public Interest Leadership Board (PILB) applications are available! Do you want to be involved in a board that is dedicated to public interest leadership? Are you interested in fostering community development and challenging societal inequities? The PILB is accepting applications through Friday, March 30, 2012. Applications are available online here.

The American Bar Association’s Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division is accepting nominations for its 2012 National Awards. Nominations for the Dorsey, Hodson and Nelson Awards must be received by Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Don’t miss this opportunity to honor a public lawyer or public law office! Saturday, March 31st, Rockin’ on the Green Event, Ransom Everglades High School: Volunteers are needed at this annual fundraiser benefitting the Children’s Bereavement Center. Volunteers will be asked to assist from either 6 – 9 pm or 8:30 – 11:30 pm. Volunteer responsibilities will include assisting guests at check-in, monitoring auction items, relocating auction items, assisting guests locate their winnings and check-out. Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) is looking for volunteers for its naturalization project which will include monthly citizenship clinics. Email UMHOPE if you are interested in getting involved.

Global Workers Justice Alliance (NYC) Seeking Summer Legal Intern: Interns will research issues related to portable justice for transnational migrants and assist in developing and managing a transnational advocate alliance. Spanish fluency is preferred, but not required. To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and the names, emails, and phone numbers of two references via email. The Application for the 2012 Summer Institutes at Capital University Law School is Now Available

Capital University Law School welcomes Summer Institute visiting student applications from students who are in good standing at an accredited law school in the United States (for Summer Dispute Resolution Institute,Summer Adoption Law Institute, and Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Institute).

The application for the 2012 Summer Institutes is now available. Any student interested in adoption and child welfare topics should consider registering for either (or both!) the Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Institute or the Summer Adoption Law Institute, which are organized by the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy at Capital University Law School.

The Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Institute (ICWI) will take place July 30 – August 3 and the Summer Adoption Law Institute (SALI) will take place August 6 – 10 at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio. Both courses are dynamic, one-week intensive two credit hour classes.

The Egyptian-American Rule of Law Association (EARLA) Seeks a Law Clerk

The Egyptian-American Rule of Law Association (EARLA) seeks a second or third-year law student to serve as a pro bono law clerk for ten weeks.  EARLA is a non-profit organization that provides technical legal assistance to promote the rule of law in Egypt. Law clerks work virtually from home or in EARLA’s Washington, DC office on various substantive projects, including but not limited to, drafting policy papers on various aspects of Egyptian law, analyzing ongoing changes in Egypt’s legal system and politics, raising public awareness about rule of law in Egypt through social media, assisting in fundraising, attending conferences on behalf of EARLA, and preparing for and attending high profile public policy panels at leading think tanks.

EARLA will consider the following criteria when making its hiring decision:

  • Strong interest in rule of law, international law, and the Middle East
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Excellent legal writing skills
  • Strong legal research skills
  • Ability to multi-task under short deadlines
  • Willingness to perform administrative tasks
  • Fluency in Arabic speaking or reading is preferred but not required
  • Ability to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week during the semester and 15 hours per week during the summers
  • Possesses a positive, can-do attitude

The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia Seeks Attorneys

The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia seeks two staff attorneys to work in its Domestic Violence / Family Law Unit as a part of its new Domestic Violence Underserved Communities Representation Project.

The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia was formed in 1932 to “provide legal aid and counsel to indigent persons in civil law matters and to encourage measures by which the law may better protect and serve their needs.” Legal Aid is the oldest general civil legal services program in the District of Columbia. Over the last 80 years, tens of thousands of the District’s neediest residents have been served by Legal Aid staff and volunteers. For more information on Legal Aid please visit the website.

Tasks and Duties:

The staff attorneys will handle a caseload of domestic violence cases, including civil protection order cases, as well as custody, child support, and divorce matters for survivors of domestic violence; interview prospective clients; participate in community outreach; and engage in systemic reform efforts.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidates will have, at a minimum, the following:

  • Strong litigation, organizational, and written and oral communication skills;
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other staff;
  • Legal services experience or the equivalent;
  • Two years’ family law experience;
  • A willingness to handle a significant case load of individual cases and assist or take the lead on policy reform efforts;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice; and
  • Ability to speak Spanish, Amharic, or other language prevalent among the Legal Aid client community preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

The staff attorneys will be paid in accordance with Legal Aid’s attorney salary scale. Legal Aid also offers a generous benefits package.

Monday – Friday, 8:30 am-5:30 pm: Waiting Room Ambassadors (you can color with the children, read books, make bracelets etc.) Peak hours are afterschool 2:00 – 5:30 pm. Other volunteer activities include: public speaking, fundraising, special events and in-kind donation drives. If you want to volunteer, please contact Abegail De La Fuente.

Diversity Job Fairs for 2012

Bay Area Diversity Career Fair:

Job fair held in San Franciscoin early August, open to rising 2L students. Registration deadline TBA.  

The Boston Lawyers Group Boston and Washington Job Fairs for Law Students of Color:

The Boston Job fair will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2012, in, Boston, MA. In addition to the job fair, the BLG will host networking receptions for selected students. Registration deadline is July 6.  

The Delaware Minority Job Fair for 2Ls and 3Ls:

This year’s Job Fair will be held in August, in Wilmington, Delaware. The Job Fair is open to all second and third-year law students seeking positions in Delawarefor the summer of 2013 and fall of 2014. The job fair is by invitation only and if you are invited, expenses are paid. Students submit an application to all attending employers and if selected by two, they are invited. Interested students must complete and return an application form, along with their resumes and college and law school transcripts to the Job Fair Administrator, deadline TBA. Heartland Legal Diversity Job Fair:

Job fair takes place in August and is open to rising 2Ls, 3Ls and class of 2012 graduates. Fair is designed to expose students to both traditional and non-traditional employers. Registration deadline TBA.

Hispanic National Bar Association Career Fair:

Job will be held in Seattle, WAon August 24, 2012. Open to rising 2Ls, 3Ls and LL.M. students. Registration deadline TBA.

IMPACT Legal Recruitment Program for Students with Disabilities:

Job fair will be held in Washington, DCAugust 3. Registration deadline TBA. Open to rising 2Ls, 3Ls, and graduates with disabilities.

Indianapolis Bar Association Diversity Job Fair:

Job fair takes place July 26-27 and is open to 2L students graduating in 2013 who represent all aspects of diversity and are looking for a one of a kind legal community in a Midwestern city. Last year more than 20 employers participated. There is no fee for students to register for the fair. Three $2500 scholarships will be awarded to participating students. Registration opens April 1 and runs through June 18, 2012. For more information please contact Diane Quick in the Career Development Office.

Lavender Law Career Fair:

Job fair is open to rising 2L and 3L lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and in 2012 will be held in Washington, DC on August 23. Online registration deadline is August 10 (early registration) but participants can register at the door (registration fees are higher).

Louisiana State Bar Association Minority Involvement Section’s Annual Job Fair:

Open to all students (spring) and 2Ls and 3Ls (fall). Spring program is virtual and specifically targets students outside the top 1/3 of the class. Spring registration deadline is March 30.

Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference:

Held in Minneapolis, MN, open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls interested in interviewing with the largest legal employers in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Registration deadline TBA.

National Bar Association Annual Job Fair:

Job fair is held each year in conjunction with the organization’s annual conference. This year the job fair will be held in July is Las Vegas. Open to all students, recent graduates and seasoned attorneys. Registration deadline TBA.

National Black Law Students Association Southern Regional Job Fair:

Regional job fair is held annually and is open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls. Registration deadline TBA.

National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair:

Job fair will be held on Tuesday, July 31 in New Orleans, LA.There is a nominal registration fee required for participation. Registration is available online with a credit card. Registration deadline TBA.

Northwest Minority Job Fair:

This event will be held on Saturday, August 25th, 2012 from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, in Seattle. Job Fair participants are also encouraged to attend the Fair luncheon held at 12:00 pm, featuring a local guest speaker. Applications deadline TBA. Please see website for more information.  

Rocky Mountain Diversity Career Fair:

Career fair aims to assist employers in fulfilling their commitments to diversity and expand opportunities for law students and law graduates traditionally under-represented in the practice of law in the Rocky Mountainregion including law students and graduates who are ethnic or racial minorities, disabled, and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Job fair takes place at Invesco Field in Denver, Colorado, Friday, September 14, 2012. Interested applicants can begin applying April 1 (deadline TBA). 

The Southeastern Minority Job Fair (SEMJF):

All applicants must pre-register through the Miami Law CDO – watch your email for more information. Please complete the Job Fair Pre-Registration Form attached to this email to be included in this job fair. There is no fee for students to register for this fair. The fair will be held on Friday, July 27 & Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Suites Atlanta Northwest in Marietta, Georgia. A complete time line and other information may be found online. 

Tri-State Diversity Recruitment Program:

Open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls interested in interviewing with law firms and corporations in the Kentucky, Ohioand Indianan region. Registration deadline TBA. 

Vault/MCCA Legal Diversity Career Fair:

Fair is open to 2L, 3L and lateral candidates. Both Washington D.C. & Los Angeles fairs will take place in July. Registration for each fair is separate. Apply online.  No registration deadline is indicated, application deadline TBA if interested.

Virginia Bar Association Diversity Job Fair:

The VBA annual Diversity Job Fair will take place in August and is open to rising 2L and 3L law students of diverse backgrounds (including race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability or age) who are interested in practicing in Virginia.
