Wednesday, April 10th, HOPE Fellows: The Future of Marriage Equality, 12:30-1:50 p.m., F-309, Please join current HOPE Fellows in an event conducted by constitutional law scholar Caroline Mala Corbin, who will be lecturing about the two upcoming marriage equality cases before the Supreme Court. Saturday, April 13th, 8am, SunSmart 5K, The SunSmart 5K is an event to celebrate Heart & Skin health. Proceeds from the run/walk will go to support melanoma skin cancer research at the University of Miami via the Anna Fund and a program called Team for Life that helps get life-saving heart devices into Miami. The Florida Bar Association Environmental and Law Use Law Section’s Summer Fellowship opportunity. A $5,000 stipend is available for this program, designed to encourage law students to study and pursue careers in public interest environmental law. Deadline is May 1st. The U.D.C. David A. Clarke School of Law is pleased to announce fellowship opportunities in its Juvenile & Special Education Law Clinic for At-Risk Youth, and its Housing and Consumer Law Clinic. These two-year LL.M. programs will include coursework in public interest law, clinical pedagogy, and systems change. Health Law Internship: Poverty health law practice at Florida Legal Services, Inc. (FLS), Miami Office. Internship will include cutting edge work on implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA/ “Obama Care”), particularly as it impacts families and individuals entitled to subsidized premium assistance, including Medicaid. It will also include Medicaid advocacy and litigation, including assistance in preparation of oral arguments in the Eleventh Circuit, see KG v. Dudek, 864 F.Supp.2d 1314 (2012). The student will work in a collegial relationship with Miriam Harmatz, one of Florida’s most experienced Medicaid advocates, and Betsy Havens, an Equal Justice Works Fellow and Miami Scholars alumni, whose project focuses on children’s access to health care. University of Miami Graduate Seeking to Sublease in Washington, DC for Summer 2013

University of Connecticut School of Law Student Legal Writing Competition

Deadline:

June 3, 2013

Description:

The University of Connecticut School of Law has established a student Legal Writing Competition to encourage and reward original student writing on legal issues affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction or substance abuse.

Topic:

Entrants should submit a paper on a legal issue affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction or substance abuse.

Eligibility:

Papers will be accepted from any student enrolled for the 2012-13 academic year in an ABA-accredited law school in the United States or Canada. Papers must be the law student author’s own work and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere. Notwithstanding the foregoing, a student may incorporate professorial feedback as part of a course requirement or supervised writing project. All students intending to enter the competition must register by April 15, 2013. Registration Form.

Format:

Papers should be a minimum of 15 pages in length and shall not exceed 30 pages, including footnotes. They must be types, double-spaced and with one-inch margins, on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper, in a 12-point font, such as Times New Roman. All citations and footnotes should conform to the current edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation and should also be in a 12-point font.

Judging:

Papers will be judged by a panel appointed by the University of Connecticut School of Law. Judges will evaluate papers based on the substance, clarity of the proposal or thesis, logical force, support of argument, and quality of research. Grammar, syntax and form will also be taken into consideration.

Submission:

Entries must be received by 5pm on June 3, 2013. Entries must be submitted in two formats: (1) email an electronic version (in Microsoft Word or PDF format) via email and (2) mail, with a postmark dated by June 3, 2013, four copies of the paper to:

Three cash prizes will be awarded: $750 First Prize, $500 Second Prize, and $250 Third Prize. Winners will be notified by July 30, 2013. All decisions of the judges are final.

 

Immigration Fellowship Opportunity in Washington, DC

South Florida Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel – Ambassadors Program for South Florida Law Students

The South Florida Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACCA-SFL) announced the launch of its Ambassadors Program for South Florida law students in early 2012. Participating law students, or “ACCA-SFL Ambassadors”, volunteer at ACCA-SFL’s various events during the year, providing the students with a unique networking and educational opportunity.  With access to ACC-SFL’s in-house counsel membership and its law firm sponsors, students are able to build relationships and attend seminars on current legal issues. ACCA-SFL, a non-profit association, is the South Florida chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), the world’s largest community of in-house counsel, serving the professional and business interests of attorneys who practice in the legal departments of corporations, associations, and other private-sector organizations around the globe. ACCA-SFL serves more than 400 members from Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Attend “The Ins and Outs of Family Law and Child Advocacy” on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. in Room F-108.

This event will be a discussion about child advocacy and family law. Child advocacy and family law are both broad areas of practice, and students will be able to listen to and interact with practitioners who focus on different topics in these areas and different methods of practice.
