2015 Legal Diversity & Inclusion Tennis/Golf Classic @ Crandon Park – May 9th – 3 CLE

CONNECTING DIVERSE LAW STUDENTS WITH LAWYERS, LAW FIRMS, CORPORATE COUNSEL, JUDGES, ASSOCIATIONS & THE LEGAL COMMUNITY

BRING THE FAMILY AND JOIN US FOR A FULL DAY OF FUN!!

MAY 9th, 2015 – ALL DAY

3 CLE applied for

Crandon Park Tennis Center – Key Biscayne

A SPORTING EVENT FIRST AND FOREMOST: The 2015 Diversity & Inclusion Sports Classic will include tennis and golf tournaments. The USTA will once again run the tennis tournament, which will follow a team tennis round robin format so that during the day players can compete with nearly every other player out on the courts. The number of tennis players has been limited to 72, divided into 12 teams of six. Teams will be strategically organized in a ways that account for players’ skill levels, but also group people in different spheres of the legal community to facilitate networking – for example, a team may consist of a judge, law student, in-house counsel, law firm lawyer, government lawyer, member of academia or third-party legal vendor. Golf teams will be organized in the same way. The golf tournament will follow a shotgun start. It is open to 88 players that will be divided in 22 teams of four.

CAREFREE NETWORKING: Team sports facilitate camaraderie among team members and focused, friendly competition with opponents. In this environment, there is no self-awareness, awkwardness or boring conversations while networking. You will make true connections with other legal professionals without even thinking about it. This is an ideal networking environment for everyone – particularly people who are still learning how to network or who generally don’t enjoy doing so.

FUN FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND GREAT FOOD: What are sporting events without the excitement of spectators? Besides, work takes you away from loved ones enough. Invite your family and friends to join the tournaments, or simply come out for the many other activities available for guests – including tennis and video game competitions for children, and dominoes and chair massages for adults. Moreover the food will be excellent! Our caterer will be preparing freshly catered meals throughout the day – no boxed lunches. We will end the day with a happy hour celebration, with music, dancing and awards for the tennis and golf champions.

CUTTING EDGE CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION: The 2015 Diversity & Inclusion Sports Classic will incorporate a CLE presentation for players, while guests will have access to a total of three CLE programs throughout the day. See schedule for more information. Panel topics are to be confirmed and announced, but will be presented by highly-qualified experts and address cutting-edge topics like successful economic models for the modern legal practice, minority and diversity issues, preventing the professional exodus of mid-career women lawyers, leveraging media to promote your practice, how technology and social media are disrupting the legal profession, and future courthouses: brick and mortar or virtual spaces.

The 2015 James E. Beckley Securities Arbitration and Law Writing Competition

The James E. Beckley Securities Arbitration and Law Writing Competition is a writing contest for law students interested in Securities Arbitration and Securities Law.  The PIABA Bar Journal Board-of-Editors will publish the first place paper, and may, at their option, elect to print additional submissions.

Winners will be announced at the PIABA Annual Meeting and posted on The PIABA Foundation and PIABA websites. Stipends are awarded as follows: First Place – $1000; Second Place – $750; and Third place – $500.

Topic. The submission may address any aspect of Securities Law; Securities Arbitration; The Federal Arbitration Act, Title 9, US Code, Section 1-14; or FINRA Code of Arbitration, effective April 16, 2007 and any changes or proposed changes to that Code. The writing can be based in theory or practice, but should ultimately advocate a position on the topic area chosen.

Eligibility. The competition is open to all students who attend a law school in the United States. Full-time students who are not law students but who write law-related papers as part of a course at an American law school are also eligible. Employees of The PIABA Foundation and PIABA, except for students working less than 20 hours per week, are not eligible to enter the competition.

Authorship. The author must have performed all the key tasks of researching, writing, and revising the paper for himself or herself, but may have received a reasonable amount of advice from academicians or practitioners. Except for any discussions or other activities that occur as part of course activities approved by the student’s professor, the author must avoid collaboration with other students. If the paper is written as an assignment in a legal writing class and if the student was assigned to produce the paper along with a partner, the student may submit the paper but must identify the portions for which the student was the sole author. Only those parts of the paper will be evaluated. Under no other circumstances may any of the written product be produced by another.

Criteria and Judging. All entries will be judged anonymously by the Competition Judges, who will select the winning submission(s). Robin Ringo will notify the award winner(s). The Judges reserve the right not to award any prizes if it is determined that no entries are of sufficient quality to merit selection that year. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:quality of research and authority provided; accuracy and clarity of the analysis; compliance with legal writing standards and technical quality of writing, including organization, grammar, syntax, and form. Strong preference will be given to articles that advocate pro-investor positions, provide updates on or surveys of securities or ADR law, and/or are consistent with The PIABA Foundation’s mission of promoting financial literacy by educating public investors about abuses in the financial services industry and the securities dispute resolution process.

Purposes of the James E. Beckley Securities Arbitration and Law Writing Competition. The purposes of the competition are to promote greater interest in and understanding of the fields of securities arbitration and securities law and to encourage excellent legal writing skills in law students.

Format. Submissions should be on one of the topics listed above. The text of a submission must be double-spaced, with twelve-point font and one-inch margins. Any Question(s) Presented section, the Statement of the Facts / Statement of the Law section, the Argument section, and/or the Conclusion together are limited to 25 pages. If the submission covers both a topic among those listed above and a topic not listed above, only the topic listed above will be evaluated. Submissions will be penalized for arguing a position that would limit investor rights rather than expand them.

To Enter. Entries must be submitted no later than 3 pm CDT on September 18, 2015 through The Foundation Competition Submission Form. The contestant’s name and other identifying markings such as school name are not to be on any copy of the submitted entry. Announcing the 2015 International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Student Writing Competition

American University Washington College of Law Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law (Center), the American Society of International Law’s Lieber Society (ASIL), and the American Red Cross International Humanitarian Law team are pleased to announce the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Student Writing Competition. The Competition seeks submissions of academic papers on the topic of international humanitarian law (IHL) from students currently enrolled in a law degree program in the United States or abroad. The purpose of the Competition is to enhance scholarship and deepen understanding among students in this important area of international law.

The theme of the 2015 Competition is “The Intersection of International Humanitarian Law and Gender.” Papers should focus on ways in which IHL intersects with gender issues, such as the role of women as combatants, the gendered use of sexual violence during times of armed conflict, the impact of  gender stereotyping on international humanitarian law, etc.

This Competition is part of a multi-pronged initiative to expand and support the teaching and study of IHL among both students and professors in which both the Center and ASIL have been deeply involved. In 2007, the Center published a study with the International Committee of the Red Cross on Teaching International Humanitarian Law in US Law Schools. The study identified a growing need for resources to support and expand the teaching of IHL among law faculty, but also a desire to support the interest of students in learning about IHL. The IHL Student Writing Competition promotes and supports student interest and deepening scholarship in IHL by providing students with a tangible way to become more directly involved in the global discourse around IHL.

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:

Students must be currently enrolled in a law degree program at a U.S. or foreign law school as of the submission deadline. Students must choose a legal topic related to this year’s theme, “The Intersection of International Humanitarian Law and Gender.” Papers without a direct focus on this theme will not be reviewed. Submissions must be unpublished papers written solely by the candidate in English.

DEADLINE OF SUBMISSION:

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, October 7, 2015 by 12:00 PM (NOON) Eastern Standard Time (EST). Students will receive an email confirmation that their submission was received no later than 24 hours after the submission deadline and should contact the organizers in the event they do not receive a confirmation email.

AWARD:

The winning author will receive a $500 cash prize and a one-year ASIL student membership. The winning author will also have the opportunity to present his or paper through a virtual conference with a panel of experts.
