The FBA Section on Taxation Announces the 2016 Donald C. Alexander Writing Competition!

The FBA Section on Taxation would like to announce the 2016 Donald C. Alexander Writing Competition.

The prizes are: 1st place: $2,000; 2nd place: $1,000; and a trip to the FBA’s Annual Tax Law Conference in Washington, D.C. Winning entries may be published in the Tax Section newsletter, the Report, or in The Federal Lawyer. Other entries may also earn an honorable mention at the conference.

Requirements are as follows:

  • Full and part-time J.D. and LL.M. students are eligible.
  • Deadline is January 8, 2016
  • Any original paper concerning federal taxation between 20 and 50 double spaced pages is welcome.
  • Seminar papers and articles submitted (but not yet selected for publication) to law reviews, journals, or other competitions are eligible.

Veterans’ Legal Career Fair 2016

The 2nd Annual Veterans’ Legal Career Fair will be held on April 29-30, 2016 in Washington, D.C. This event—the only one of its kind in the United States—provides a unique opportunity for legal employers to interview lawyers who are veterans or active-duty service members preparing for a transition out of the military.

The career fair will arrange one-on-one interviews and informational sessions for veterans (including active duty JAG Corps members and reservists) seeking positions as lawyers, including with corporate legal departments, law firms, other private sector employers and government agencies. Spouses of active-duty service members and veterans are also eligible to participate.

Last year’s inaugural event drew 150 candidates from around the world and 45 employers, including two dozen leading law firms as well as representatives of legal departments at major companies such as Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, American Express, PwC and Prudential.

Orrick is honored to partner with The American Legion; corporate founding sponsors Microsoft Corporation, Morgan Stanley and ALM; and private practice sponsors Shearman & Sterling and the D.C. Diverse Partners Network to create this career fair.

T.J. Reddick Bar Association Networking, Resume Building, and Interviewing Tips for Attorneys

Purpose: The purpose of the CLE is to provide new and experienced attorneys with information to assist in legal networking, resume building, and interviewing for legal jobs in the public and private sectors. Legal professionals from corporate and private practice will participate in the CLE. Additionally, a head hunter will provide practical tips and information regarding the legal sector and job market. The speakers will discuss the importance of pro bono services, as well as involvement in the community and the profession through voluntary bar organizations and other community service organizations. The speakers will also discuss networking, resume building, working with head hunters, non-legal jobs for lawyers, and salary expectations and trends in South Florida.

Date & Location: The CLE will be on November 19, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at Greenspoon Marder Law, 200 East Broward Boulevard, Suite 1800, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301.

Cost: The CLE is free for due paying T.J. Reddick Bar Association members, law students, and judges. Non-members, the cost of the CLE is $27.37 for non-members. Non-members may pay their dues before or at the CLE on November 19, 2015 to be considered a member.

Our editorial process will commence in mid-January and will be published in the spring.  UMBLR conducts a rigorous editorial process for each article and will often publish ahead of schedule. The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship (named in memory of the late Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission)

Selected (1L or 2L) students will serve for eight or ten weeks during the summer of 2016 in the consumer protection or consumer affairs offices of participating state and territorial governments.

Steiger Fellowship must complete an online application survey available here. At the completion of the application survey students must also submit, via email, required material.

The application period is November 1, 2015 until January 15, 2016. Applications will not be accepted beyond the January 15, 2016 deadline date.

Each selected student will receive a $6,000 stipend for the summer (administered through the offices of the state/territory attorneys general and subject to certain federal taxes). In the event that a Steiger Fellow is not living at home during their fellowship, there is a possibility that a limited optional travel/housing stipend allowance in an amount yet to be determined may be available.

Diversity Open House – An Invitation to All Law Students

The Legal Aid Society, the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys (ALAA), the Attorneys of Color Caucus (ACLA), and the LGBT Caucus welcome all 1L and 2L law students to attend a networking and informational Open House, generously sponsored by Debevoise & Plimpton, LLC.

The Legal Aid Society is the oldest and largest law firm for low-income New Yorkers. We offer law students the opportunity to advocate for social justice, while developing the legal skills they need to compete in the workforce.
