Law Firm Announces Essay Competition in Honor of the late Criminal Defense Attorney Deron Castro

Deron Castro, a New York criminal defense attorney par excellence, departed this Earth too soon and too suddenly in late July 2018. He will not be forgotten by his family, his children, his colleagues whose respect he earned, and his many grateful clients whom he served in over 24 years of his law practice. He sought justice for many unjustly accused. He took more than 90 criminal cases to trial, winning the vast majority of them.

In his honor, Halscott Megaro, P.A. will be hosting its Annual Essay Writing Competition, which is open to all current full-time and part-time enrolled students in an ABA accredited law school. One winner will be selected and will receive a $1000.00 scholarship award from the Deron Castro Memorial Scholarship. Deron Castro was well-known and respected as one of the most successful and skilled criminal defense attorneys, securing acquittal after acquittal for his clients.  A fearless advocate, he provided nothing but the highest caliber of representation to his loyal and dedicated clientele.

Eligibility:

The scholarship is open to all current full-time and part-time matriculated students in an ABA accredited law school.

How to Apply:

For applying the essay contest, the candidates must write a 1000 word or fewer essay on the following topic: What makes the difference between a good and a great criminal defense attorney?

Submission Details:

Your essay must be submitted via email and must be in Word or PDF format.

In the alternative, the applicant may submit a 5-minute (or less) video essay.  The video must be a closeup of the applicant, giving their essay as a lecture or speech, addressing the camera directly and must have a green screen in the background. Editing is permitted.

The essay must be submitted along with a short bio on the applicant, a passport-style photograph of the applicant, and a release permitting publication of the photograph and the essay (or video) by Halscott Megaro, P.A., its agents or assigns.

Award Amount:

The $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded to the winning candidate.

Application Deadline:

The deadline for essay submission is September 1, 2018. The winner will be announced September 8, 2018. The press release may be viewed online.

2019 Weil, Gotshal & Manges 2L Diversity Fellowship

The Weil 2L Diversity Fellowship Program is designed to increase the number of diverse attorneys who want to pursue careers at Weil. The Weil 2L Diversity Fellowship is available to students who are enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and intend to practice law in a major city of the United States in which Weil has an office. Eligible students must have successfully completed their first year of a full-time JD program, with an expected graduation date of spring 2020, and may not be the recipient of Weil’s 1L Diversity award or a similar scholarship award from another law firm.

Weil will be accepting applications from potential Fellowship candidates from June 1, 2018 through July 14, 2018. An internal selection panel will evaluate all applications, considering such factors as overall commitment to diversity, work experience and academic achievement. Finalists will also be interviewed for the Fellowship after applications are submitted. The winner(s) will be announced in September 2018.

Weil 2L Diversity Fellows will receive a gift of a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship for their third year of law school (2019-2020). This scholarship is contingent upon accepting an offer of summer employment at Weil.

The Weil 2L Diversity Scholars Program application is available to apply online for students interested in applying for the 2L Fellowship. The application process is open to all law school students who fulfill the fellowship’s eligibility requirements.

■■ Personal Statement (no more than two (2) pages, double spaced)

Please note, while we do require a law school transcript, we understand that some schools will not release first year grades by the application deadline. It is not necessary to apply to the summer associate program separately; this completed application denotes consideration for the entire summer program/scholarship package. 2018 Gwen S. Cherry Scholarship and Fellowship Applications (deadline 6/11/18)

MISSION:

The Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association (“GSCBWLA”) Fellowship for Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. (“LSGMI”) was established to honor the remarkable work of a remarkable woman, Gwendolyn S. Cherry. Gwen Cherry was a pioneer attorney at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., where she promoted equal justice and advocated on behalf of low-income communities in Miami-Dade County, among many other accomplishments. This Fellowship was created to continue her legacy and humanitarian efforts.

FELLOW RESPONSIBILITIES:

The GSCBWLA Fellow’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, interviewing clients and or witnesses; drafting legal documents, including briefs; preparing discovery; and conducting research and investigations. The GSCBWLA Fellow may also attend strategy sessions, hearings, mediations, depositions, and community events.

WHO SHOULD APPLY? 

We are seeking an extraordinary Fellow with a strong commitment to public service. To be eligible for the GSCBWLA Fellowship, prospective applicants must be enrolled in law school, be a 2L or 3L, and demonstrate a commitment to equal justice and advocating for low-income clients of Miami-Dade County.

STIPEND AND HOURS:

The stipend will be paid bi-weekly. If the GSCBWLA Fellow is a 2L, he or she will receive $13 per hour. If the GSCBWLA Fellow is a 3L, he or she will receive $14 per hour. This is a 2018 Summer placement and will require the Fellow to work 10 – 12 weeks. The hours will be flexible.
