The Florida Bar’s Business Law Section and the Dade County Bar Association’s Business Law Committee present “Demystifying the Securities Laws: A Practitioners Approach to Getting the Deal Done.” This event will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 from 12:15 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. The 1.0 hour CLE will be presented by Alan H. Aronson of Akerman Senterfitt. You may attend this event either in person or by telephone conferencing.

ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP)

The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or economically disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA: Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA. Interns will receive an award of $1,500.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as LGBT. The program is only open to students who have not previously participated as an intern in the program. Students applying to the program must submit a completed application, grades (second-year students), resume, legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Students may rank location preferences on their application; however students may not request particular judges or courts.

Screening interviews will be conducted to better determine student qualifications. Only qualified students will be sent on for judicial interviews. Judicial interviews will continue until all positions are filled.

Legal Services of New Jersey Public Interest Legal Fellowship Program for 1L and 2L Students

Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) invites applications from 1L and 2L students for the Deborah T. Poritz Summer Public Interest Legal Fellowship Program for the summer of 2011.  The program’s purpose is to promote public interest and poverty law opportunities for interested law students.

Foreign Service General Services Officers (GSOs) serve at many of the approximately 265 Foreign Service posts throughout the world, at Department of State locations in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, in New York at the United States Mission to the United Nations, and at the Florida Regional Center in Ft. Lauderdale. Primary responsibilities include the management of physical resources and logistical functions at United States embassies and consulates, and service to other U.S. Government agencies. GSOs are responsible for the overall management of General Services Operations (or some portion of these operations), the supervision of the subordinate staff, and the actual performance of some or all of the following functions. The GSO normally works under the direction of the Management Officer/Counselor and is a service provider to the International Cooperative Administrative Support Services (ICASS) Council at post.

American College of Legal Medicine 2011 Student Writing Competition

Every year, the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) presents an award for the outstanding original paper on legal medicine. All students studying law, dentistry, podiatry, nursing, pharmacy, health science, healthcare administration or public health are encouraged to compete.  Prizes to be awarded:

Hirsh Award Winner – $1,000
2nd Prize – $500
3rd Prize – $250

The first place paper will be named the Hirsh Award Winner. In addition, the ACLM will pay the Hirsh Award Winner’s costs of travel & lodging to present his or her paper at the ACLM 2011 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV.

Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship

The Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship Fund is intended to provide an opportunity for first through third year law students of under-represented minority backgrounds (e.g. race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or socioeconomic background) who have an interest in practicing law in Sarasota County upon graduation, to obtain summer placement in private law firms and governmental agencies in Sarasota County, Florida, so that they and potential employers in the Sarasota County legal community may establish a connection. At the conclusion of their summer employment in a law firm or governmental agency, the law school the student attends will receive scholarship funds of no less than $2,000.00 per student to be used by the student to continue his or her education.

To apply, students must complete an application and return it to the Community Foundation of Sarasota, FL by January 14, 2011.  To obtain a copy of the application, please email the CDO.
