The University of Miami Faculty Senate Seeks a Legal Intern

The Universityof Miami Faculty Senate is the vehicle by which the Faculty is authorized to share in planning and governance of the university. Through its committees and as a deliberative and legislative body, the Senate plays an important role in dealing with academic policies, new program and degree approvals, compensation and the annual budgets, reviews of chairs and deans, and countless other matters of collegial concern and interest. It is also the vehicle for hearing faculty grievances regarding rank, salary and conditions of employment, as well as appeals on tenure decisions.  

The Faculty Senate is currently seeking a 3L law student as a legal intern to work 10-14 hours week at $10.00-12.00 per hour. The candidate must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision in a busy, quiet and small office that deals with sensitive materials. The intern must exhibit discretion and professionalism.

Job Description:

  • Compose and edit correspondence;
  • Sort, categorize and provisionally determine what should be archived or deleted; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship

Lane Powell has more than 135 years of commitment to communities.  This commitment is reflected in Lane Powell’s hiring and promotion of women and individuals from diverse backgrounds. As part of this commitment to diversity, the Firm has created the George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship.  The George V. Powell Scholar will be a 2012 summer associate in the Firm’sSeattleorPortlandoffice and receive a $7,500 scholarship toward tuition and expenses during the student’s third year of law school.

Academic Requirements and Selection Criteria:

The firm is seeking candidates who will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and who have a demonstrated desire to work, live and eventually practice law in Seattle or Portland.  The candidates’ academic achievements and record of leadership abilities, community service, and involvement in community issues will be taken into consideration.  Candidates must be second year students in good standing at an ABA accredited law school.  Candidates in four year joint degree programs will be considered after their third year.

Milbank Diversity Scholars Program

Milbank encourages students of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms to apply to its Diversity Scholars Program. Selected candidate will receive a $50,000 scholarship ($25,000 distributed during student’s third year of law school, $25,000 contingent on receipt and acceptance of full time offer) and a paid summer associate position with the firm for summer 2012.

Equal Justice Works Deadlines and Important Information

Public Defender Corps applications open Monday, August 15:

Equal Justice Works and the Southern Public Defender Training Center are pleased to announce that the application for the 2012 Public Defender Corps program opens Monday, August 15.  Applications must be completed online and submitted along with a résumé and two letters of recommendation by 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, September 16, 2011.  Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Approximately 14 fellowships will be available in 2012.  Exact host site locations for the 2012 Public Defender Corps Fellowships will be posted on the Equal Justice Works website on a rolling basis.  Applicants who advance to the final round of review will be able to rank their host site preferences.

Application instructions, frequently asked questions and general information about Public Defender Corps are available on the Equal Justice Works and the Southern Public Defender Training Center websites. 

Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program Update:

The 2012 Equal Justice Works Fellowships competition is underway and the online application is available from the website.  Preferred funding locations and issue areas have been updated, but note that the list is not exhaustive.  Some of the funding partners do not express specific preferences and Equal Justice Works welcomes all project proposals.  The deadline for submission is 5pm EDT on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.  Fellows selected this fall will begin their terms in September 2012.  Questions should be directed to fellowships@equaljusticeworks.org or (202) 466-3686, ext. 202.

Conference and Career Fair registration opens Tuesday, August 16:

Equal Justice Works is gearing up for their 2011 Conference and Career Fair, which will be in Washington, D.C. October 21 and 22.  Dozens of public interest employers have already signed up and several workshops are being developed to bring students the latest and greatest from the public interest law community.  Student registration opens Tuesday, August 16, 2011 on the website.

Applications Now Available for the Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court

Applications are now available for the Fall 2011 Judicial Intern Program of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court (Miami,FL).  The program places second and third year students in a direct working relationship with county and circuit judges in the Civil, Criminal, Juvenile, Family and Domestic Violence Divisions. 

The schedule by which the law student will intern will be a matter to be determined between the student and judge.  However, a minimum of 5-10 hours per week is required.  Interns are not permitted to work with any law firm or other legal agency while participating in this program.  The Career Development Office is responsible for matching students and judges.  To every extent possible, the assignment will be based on students’ expressed areas of interest.

In order to apply for the program, you must submit a completed application, resume and short writing sample.  Applications are available at the reception desk in the Career Development Office,  Room A112.  You may submit your application materials in hard copy to the Career Development Office or electronically to Amy Perez.

Application deadline:  Tuesday, August 30th at 5:00 p.m.
