2021 CABA Foundation Scholarships

The Cuban American Bar Foundation (“CABF” or “CABA Foundation”) will be awarding At-Large Scholarships to law students who meet the criteria set forth below. The application deadline for this year’s application package is Thursday, July 1 2021.

Applicants need only submit one application package to be considered for all At-Large Scholarships. The CABA Foundation Board of Directors will make its selections from the submissions received and formally announce the scholarship recipients at an upcoming CABF/CABA Event by August 1, 2021. (information to be provided in the coming weeks). Application packages should be submitted to: Frances G. De La Guardia.

CABA Foundation awards scholarships on the basis of a comprehensive process. Areas that are reviewed by the committee include, but are not limited to, the following: Academic Accomplishments, Community Service, References, Personal Essay and Financial Need. CABA Foundation pays scholarship funds directly to the recipient. Scholarships are awarded annually. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.  Scholarships awarded are based upon the availability of funds and additional qualifying criteria.

CRITERIA

  • Applicant must be a law student of Cuban heritage who has distinguished himself/herself academically and/or in service-oriented activities; OR any law student who has distinguished himself/herself in research, writing, community services, and/or other activities of importance to the Cuban-American community;
  • Applicant must be a currently enrolled student in good academic standing at an accredited law school;
  • Applicant must submit a complete formal application for a CABA Foundation Scholarship;
  • Applicants must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States; and
  • Applicants must complete and submit a typed Scholarship Application and provide all supporting documents listed below (i.e., resume, evidence of enrollment, etc.) no later than July 1, 2021.

TIMELINE

  • Applications and supporting documentation are due no later than July 1, 2021.
  • Candidates may be asked for an interview by the Scholarship Committee, conducted in June.
  • Applicants are notified if awarded a scholarship by August 1, 2021.

In addition to the At-Large Scholarships, CABF has endowed scholarships at the following law schools:

  • University of Miami
  • Florida International University
  • Thomas University
  • Nova Southeastern University
  • Florida State University
  • University of Florida

Students enrolled in these law schools should contact the Dean of Students in his or her respective school to get scholarship criteria and application deadlines. July 1, 2021 is the latest for acceptance of school submittals. Recipients of these endowed scholarships will also be announced at the upcoming scholarship event by August 1, 2021.

Nebraska Governance & Technology Center Announces its First Annual Student Paper Competition: How Technology Regulates

The Nebraska Governance and Technology Center (NGTC), based in the Nebraska College of Law in collaboration with the Nebraska Colleges of Business and Engineering, is pleased to announce its first annual student paper competition. The prompt for papers is “how technology regulates.”

Technology regulates human conduct in many ways. Technologies can be designed to enable or prohibit certain types of activity directly. They may be used instrumentally to monitor or control activity. Digital platforms’ content moderation decisions have effects on our information economy and democratic policy. Changing technologies can support, undermine, or confound existing regulations and regulatory norms, for instance by decentralizing currency or eroding the distinction between longstanding categories such as employees and independent contractors.

This competition is for papers on topics such as these. We are particularly interested in papers that use a clear methodology to provide insight into underlying theories of technology and regulation. Preference will be given to papers written in a style suitable for essay-style law review publication (e.g., 6,000-10,000 words and properly footnoted). To be considered for publication, papers should be written in a style suitable to law reviews, including proper Bluebook citations.

Eligibility

This competition is open to anyone who was a law or other graduate student during the 2020-2021 academic year. Co-authored papers are welcomed. Papers co-authored with non- students where the student author was the primary author may be considered on a case-by- case basis.

Submissions

Papers should be submitted as Word documents using the form available here.

Deadline

Papers should be submitted prior to June 30, 2021.

Prizes

$4,000 first prize, $2,000 second prize, $1,000 third prize.

Judging

Papers will be judged by the NGTC faculty with input from the NGTC academic advisory board and editors of the Nebraska Law Review.

Publication

Winning papers that meet the Law Review’s publication requirements will be considered for publication in the Nebraska Law Review.

Do you wish to expand public interest opportunities on law campuses across the country? Join the Equal Justice Works National Advisory Committee to help bridge the gap between law school and the public interest field.

The National Advisory Committee (NAC) is made up of eight law students and eight law school professionals who conduct outreach and provide feedback and advice on our programs and initiatives. NAC Members serve two-year staggered terms and new members are selected each spring.

As a NAC member, you will be responsible for:

  • Building relationships with law students and law school professionals within your assigned region
  • Promoting public interest opportunities and resources
  • Visiting and speaking at regional law schools
  • Reporting back to Equal Justice Works on public interest law issues, news, and events
  • Assisting with the annual Conference and Career Fair held every October held in Washington, D.C.
  • Assisting with the design, implementation and evaluation of select initiatives including the Student Representative program and the Regional Public Interest Awards

Applications are now open for the 2021-2023 National Advisory Committee. Because terms are staggered, not all regions have vacancies at this time. For those at schools not listed,
applications will open Spring 2022.

The FCBA Foundation Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program application has re-opened! The extended deadline is Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 6:00pm ET!

The FCBA Foundation Law School Summer Internship Stipend:

For the 28th consecutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation will award stipends to outstanding law students employed as unpaid summer interns, through the FCBA Foundation’s Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program.

The FCBA Foundation is actively looking to help students from around the country who want to dedicate their time and talent over the summer to government service in areas that relate to communications law, including broadcasting, cable, information technology, television, telephony, satellite, and wireless.  It also can include work at agencies and Congressional committees addressing other communications-related areas, including internet law and policy, privacy, cybersecurity, copyright, emerging technologies, and related policy and legal issues.

How much are the stipends?  The program provides stipends of up to $5,000.  In addition, the Foundation will select one outstanding intern among those chosen to receive an additional stipend for the summer: The Max Paglin Award. The Foundation considers funding from other sources in making award decisions and generally will adjust its stipend awards so that a recipient’s total funding for the internship will not exceed [$7,000].

Where can recipients work?  Over the years, stipends have been used by students to support work in diverse federal, state and local government agencies with a connection to the communications industry.  Examples of agencies where recipients can work include the FCC, FTC, NTIA, DOJ, DHS, NIST, and others.  Students can also work in Congress and in relevant parts of state and local government.

Where does the money come from?  The Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program awards stipends from its FCC Chairman Robert Emmet Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund, and last year provided support to 26 outstanding law students. FCBA individual and corporate members donate money to the FCBA Foundation to support these stipends.

Are there limitations on use of the funds?  Stipend recipients may be selected before they have finalized their summer plans, so the FCBA Foundation requires recipients to confirm in writing that they accept an unpaid internship at an eligible agency or government office.  Minimum requirements for internship duration and time commitment also apply.
