The Richard E. Greenleaf Library Fellowships

Program Description:

The Latin American Library at Tulane University is pleased to announce the Richard E. Greenleaf Fellowships to support research at the Library for 2013-2014. Their purpose is to offer researchers who permanently reside in any country of Latin America or the Caribbean short-term residential fellowships to use the resources of the Latin American Library at Tulane to conduct research in any field of the humanities or social sciences.

Up to two fellowships will be granted every year. Each fellowship will cover the full cost of round-trip airfare, as well as housing expenses and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses for a period of one to three months, as well as full library privileges at Tulane University. Fellowships are available to any qualified scholar – including independent researchers – who resides permanently in any country in Latin America or the Caribbean (including Puerto Rico). Applications from scholars of any nationality who are permanent residents of any country in the region will be considered, but preference will be given to citizens of Latin American or Caribbean nations, including Puerto Rico. Citizens of Latin American/Caribbean countries currently living outside the region and Puerto Ricans residing outside the island are not eligible.

Fellows are expected to reside in New Orleans, to conduct research at the library for the term of the award, and to deliver a public presentation of their work-in-progress during their stay. Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s scholarly qualifications, the merits and significance of the project, and the relevance of the Latin American Library’s collections to the development of the project.

Aside from the residential requirement, criteria for selection include:

  • The merit of the research project and proposal, which should be in any field of the humanities or social sciences
  • The relevance to the project of the resources of the Latin American Library
  • The scholarly achievements and merit of the candidate, and the significance of his/her project
  • Fellowships may be held at any time between September 27, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

National LGBT Bar Association Prudential Fellowship Program – Application Deadline: March 11, 2013 at 5:00pm ET

The National LGBT Bar Association is pleased to partner with Prudential Financial, Inc. (Prudential) to provide a meaningful summer internship opportunity to a highly-motivated first-year law student. Through this partnership, the National LGBT Bar Association will select a student to join the 2013 summer law intern class at Prudential for a 10-week internship at Prudential’s offices, for a stipend of approximately $10,000. Internship positions will be located in the New   Jersey tri-state area. A position may also be available in Dallas, TX.

Internship Responsibilities:

The summer intern will have the opportunity to work with attorneys who support the broad reach of the Prudential businesses. The summer intern will also participate in the summer intern training program, which includes programs presented by Prudential attorneys that highlight different areas of the business and the legal department. Each intern will be paired with an attorney who will serve as a mentor during the program and will provide guidance on projects. The summer intern may also have an opportunity to practice interviewing skills, prepare presentations and shadow attorneys on various projects. The summer internship will run between June 3, 2013 and August 9, 2013. The summer intern will be paid a stipend of approximately $10,000, which shall accrue and be paid on an hourly basis.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a member of the National LGBT Bar Association
  • Must be a law student enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school and have successfully completed the first year of law school and be scheduled for graduation in spring 2015 (full-time students) or spring 2016 (part-time students)
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent
  • Ideal applicant will have financial or business-related experience or interest

Zelle Hofmann is Pleased to Announce a Call for Applications for the 2013 Diversity in Law Scholarship

On behalf of the national law firm Zelle Hofmann, we are pleased to announce a call for applications for our 2013 Diversity in Law Scholarship. The keystone of the firm’s Diversity Outreach Plan, the Diversity in Law Scholarship was created for law students who either (1) are a member of a diverse group (broadly defined to include race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, physical disability or economic/educational disadvantage) that is historically underrepresented in the private practice of law; or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship.
The scholarship awards the selected recipient a total of $30,000.00 to be applied towards the selected recipient’s law school tuition, fees, and text books, with one half of the scholarship paid for the student’s second year of law school and one half of the scholarship paid for the student’s third year of law school subject to the following:  To receive the second installment of the scholarship, the recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or its equivalent) through the student’s second year of law school. The scholarship recipient will also be offered a paid summer clerkship at one of the firm’s offices for the summer following the student’s first year of law school.  Finally, in order to help ensure the recipient’s successful entry into the legal profession, the firm will assign an attorney to mentor the recipient for the student’s remaining law school career.

It is our hope to spread the word about our Diversity in Law Scholarship to eligible students attending your law school.  I thought you would be the perfect “go to” person to assist the firm in our communication outreach efforts.   2. Elizabeth Pryor Johnson, is a shareholder at Fowler White Burnett involved in all aspects of labor and employment law. She represents employers, from the private, public and non-profit sectors, on the full range of employment-related matters and disputes.  She currently serves as the Chair, Board of Trustees of St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School and Advisory Board Member of Do the Right Thing, Inc.
  3. Roberto Martinez is a partner at Colson Hicks Eidson handling business, products liability, professional negligence, and white-collar criminal defense cases. He served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Miami-Dade College and on the Florida State Board of Education.
  4. Evian White is Staff Attorney, Tenants’ Rights Project and Project Director, Renters Education and Advocacy Legal (REAL) Lines at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Dade County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and co-chairs the “Pro Bono and Community Service” and the “Schools” Committees.

The American Bar Association Health Law Section 14th Annual Conference on Emerging Issues In Healthcare Law on February 20th

The American Bar Association Health Law Section 14th Annual Conference on Emerging Issues In Healthcare Law is taking place on February 20-23, 2013 at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay Miami.

ONSITE REGISTRATION: 

Please call (312) 988-5146 by FEBRUARY 15, 2013 to ensure space availability. Onsite  registration fees will only be accepted when accompanied by check, money order, American Express, MasterCard or Visa.

REGISTRATION FEE:

Your payment will cover admission to the program, continental breakfasts, coffee breaks, ticket to an Interest Group Lunch each day, receptions, and an online version of the course materials. 

INTEREST GROUP LUNCHES:

Registrants are encouraged to attend the Interest Group lunch of their choice on both Thursday and Friday. There is no additional charge for these lunches but registrants must reserve a spot. 

CLE CREDIT:

CLE credit has been requested from most states with general mandatory continuing education requirements for lawyers. For information on the approved number of credit hours to be awarded by each state, please contact the Health Law Section directly at (312) 988-5532 after February 1, 2013.

HEALTH LAW SECTION MEMBERSHIP:

2012-13 Law Student Division Liaison – Application Deadline 2/15/2013

Position Description:

Law Student Division: Liaison to Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law

Eligibility:

To qualify as a candidate, an individual must be:

  • A law student attending an ABA-approved law school;
  • An ABA Law Student Division member in good standing (dues must be paid in full for the current bar year by the filing deadline);
  • A law student in good standing at law school (not on academic probation or suspension) during the 2012-13 academic year;
  • A law student attending law school during the academic year subsequent to June 1, 2013; and
  • A law student who is in compliance with submission deadlines and requirements.

Application Deadline and Mailing Instructions:

The liaison application form, your statement and resume MUST be POSTMARKED by February 15 using an overnight mail service (UPS or FedEx) to furnish clear proof of sending and receipt. Applications sent via regular or certified mail are not eligible for certification. This is a “strict liability” deadline and requirement. No exceptions will be granted.

Additional Information:

Applicants will be interviewed by telephone in April and appointed around May 15.

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is Hosting the 2013 Patent Law Interview Program in Chicago

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 2013 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, August 1 and Friday, August 2 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LL.M. programs.

Last year, roughly 120 employers, 190 law schools and 1,700 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and transcripts to bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the materials of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program. You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program is open and will close on Monday, March 4. You can register here.

At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on interviews later in the semester). Please note that our school is listed alphabetically as University of Miami School of Law on the registration form’s drop down menu of law schools.

The CDO will be paying the $35 registration fee for our students, so you will not be charged anything when you register online.
