The University of Miami Faculty Senate Seeks Legal Intern, Faculty Senate Office

This is a pert-time position, consisting of approximately 10 hrs. week, $14/hr. The duties include composing and editing correspondence; sorting, categorizing and provisionally determining what should be archived or deleted; drafting of legislation and maintenance of the Faculty Manual; and other duties as assigned.

Must be self-motivated and able to work w/minimal supervision. This is a busy, quiet, small office that deals with sensitive materials. Employee must exhibit discretion and professionalism. 2L and 3L students are eligible.

The Center for Alcohol Policy (CAP) is Accepting Entries for its Seventh Annual Essay Contest

The CAP Essay Contest is intended to foster debate, analysis and examination of state alcohol regulation and its implications for citizens across the United States.

 

The topic for this year’s contest is: “As states contemplate the legalization of prohibited products, like marijuana, what are some lessons policymakers and regulators can learn from the movement to end alcohol Prohibition in the 1930s?”

 

WHO CAN ENTER:  The contest is open to all persons who are over the age of 18 as of November 2014. Students, academics, practicing attorneys, policymakers and members of the general public are encouraged to submit essays.

 

HOW TO ENTER:  Essays may be emailed or mailed as a hard copy to: Center for Alcohol Policy; Attn: Essay Contest; 1101 King St., Suite 600A; Alexandria, VA22314. Essays must be accompanied by an entry form.

 

DEADLINE:  The deadline for entries is November 17, 2014.  Winners will be announced in early 2015.

Equal Justice Works Veterans Legal Corps (VLC) Fellow Position

Program Background & Description:

Equal Justice Works (EJW), AmeriCorps and Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (CLSMF) have partnered to provide the Veterans Legal Corps (VLC) Fellowship opportunity to assist veterans and military families with their legal needs.  The VLC Fellow will provide civil legal assistance to low-income veterans and military families in central Florida.  The VLC is funded in Florida by AmeriCorps, EJW, and CLSMF.  CLSMF is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible clients in 12 central Florida counties.  CLSMF is funded by a variety of sources including the Legal Services Corporation, the Florida Bar Foundation, United Way, and private donations.

VLC Fellow Job Description:

  • Provide direct representation to low-income and homeless veterans and military families with legal issues including VA benefits, landlord-tenant matters, evictions, foreclosures, health and disability benefits, public benefits, child support, domestic violence and other family law matters, consumer and medical debt, wills & advanced directives, drivers’ license reinstatement, and sealing & expunging criminal records.
  • Do outreach to and collaborate with veterans’ organizations including VA facilities, Vet Centers for combat veterans, homeless shelters, veterans courts, and Stand Downs for homeless veterans.
  • Teach classes to groups of veterans at homeless shelters, Vet Centers, jails, etc. to facilitate referrals of veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
  • Establish a medical-legal partnership (MLP) on site at a VA medical facility in CLSMF’s 12 county service area. Conduct intakes at the MLP at least once a month.
  • Other administrative tasks related to CLSMF, AmeriCorps and EJW program compliance.

Qualifications:

EJW and AmeriCorps require the completion of state and federal fingerprint and criminal background checks as well as compliance with all CNCS Federal Regulations throughout the fellowship program.

The Fellow must be admitted to practice law in Florida and have graduated from an EJW member law school.  The Fellow will need excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively as a team member.  Must be able to creatively and zealously advocate for clients while managing a full caseload.  Previous experience working with low-income and homeless clients, veterans, and/or military families is a plus.

AmeriCorps Fellowship Living Allowance:

  • Living Allowance of $24,200
  • Supplemental benefits for housing, student loans, professional dues, relocation expenses and other allowable expenses (a minimum of $12,000, with a maximum determined by a Fellow’s reimbursable costs)

  • Eligibility to place all qualified student loans into forbearance and receive an interest accrual payment at the end of service;
  • $5,550 education award on successful completion of service;

Golden Gate University Seeks Director for Employer Outreach

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

External Outreach and Marketing:   

  • Develop and build long-term relationships with local and national employers to identify or create new employment and externship opportunities for Golden Gate law students and graduates. Conduct outreach visits to prospective and current employers. Maintain regular communication with past, current and prospective employers, alumni and placements. 
  • Develop marketing initiatives to promote GGU law students and alumni, particularly in the private sector legal markets. 
  • Cultivate relationships with local, state, and national bar associations to generate more employment opportunities, raise the profile of the law school, and stay abreast of the needs of the legal community. 
  • Coordinate with LCS staff to increase employer participation in established recruiting programs (e.g., On-Campus Interview and Resume Collection services). 
  • In coordination with LCS staff, the Dean, and faculty, identify and promote options to engage attorneys and prospective employers, including participation in the mentor program, speaking on campus, supervising externs, hosting receptions and information sessions, and participating in recruiting programs. 
  • Represent GGU at job fairs, including regional, diversity, geographic and special interest fairs. 
  • Participate actively in legal and professional organizations such as BALRA (Bay Area Legal Recruitment Association), NALP (National Association for Legal Professionals), local and specialty bar associations, and the Law Career Services Consortium of Northern California.  

Career Development Programming 

  • In collaboration with Law Career Services staff, identify speakers and topics for career programming. 
  • Conceptualize, plan and host employer events (e.g., receptions, information sessions, etc.) at the law school in collaboration with LCS and externship staff.   
  • Invite alumni and other attorneys to interact with students via campus presentations, receptions, and participation in the 30-Minute Mentor program. 
  • Write content for handouts, blog entries, social media, newsletters and external publications.

Internal Outreach and Relations 

  • Share substantive feedback from employers with faculty, dean, and LCS staff for incorporation into curriculum planning and career advising. 
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean and faculty members, provide direction to the law school’s Employment Task Force to support faculty members’ efforts in linking students with the legal community.  Train faculty and law school leadership boards on how to make helpful introductions and interventions on behalf of GGU students and graduates. 
  • Work closely with the Office of University Advancement in conducting outreach to alumni for employer development purposes. 

Data Analysis, Data Management and Assessment: 

  • Conduct research to identify prospective employers for outreach purposes and expand the employer database. 
  • In collaboration with LCS staff, develop and utilize a variety of communications and records systems to monitor employment outreach activity and history. 
  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Law Career Services, identify specific outreach goals and produce regular reports to evaluate success. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience: 

 

Required:

  • Experience in law career services, legal recruiting, or legal hiring.
  • Well-developed network of relationships with Bay Area legal employers.
  • Experience with event planning, program administration, record keeping and working with deadlines required.
  • Experience supervising staff.

Preferred:

  • J.D. degree from ABA-accredited law school or equivalent strongly preferred
  • Member of the state bar of California
  • Experience in program development and administration, preferably in a law school or other post-secondary educational institution.
  • Experience in relationship cultivation and stewardship (e.g., fundraising, recruiting, marketing and sales).
  • Prior experience working with diverse populations.  

Knowledge of: 

  • Principles and best practices of law career services, legal recruiting and hiring practices.
  • Current legal job market, both locally and nation-wide.
  • Effective design of marketing campaigns that involve in-person, email and telephonic outreach.
  • Best practices for cultivating relationships with prospective employers. 
  • Best practices for record-keeping using online databases and other tools.
  • MS Office and prior experience utilizing relational databases.

 Ability to: 

  • Initiate and maintain positive and professional relationships with employers, students, faculty, staff, and the legal community.
  • Be a champion for the law school and its students to prospective employers.
  • Spend a significant amount of time out of the office. Plan to use time efficiently, whether working in the office or off-site.
  • Act independently while staying in close communication with supervisor and team members. Work collaboratively with law school colleagues to share information and resources.
  • Understand and be sensitive to the needs of diverse populations of students.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively in oral and written forms. Excellent public speaking and group presentation skills.

DAYS & HOURS:   

Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Schedule may require some evening and weekend

hours, and local travel to off-campus appointments during the week

The Director for Employer Outreach reports to the Associate Dean for Law Career Services and is

responsible for promoting, cultivating and expanding employment opportunities for Golden Gate law

students and graduates.
