The Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization 2015 Paid Summer Fellowships at Yale Law School

The Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization of Yale Law School (LSO) invites applications for its 2015 Summer Fellowship program. Applications will be accepted immediately and reviewed on a rolling basis.

LSO is the main organization at Yale Law School providing legal representation to individuals and organizations in need of legal assistance but unable to afford private attorneys. During the academic year, law students work closely with clinical faculty members to represent clients in a wide range of litigation and non-litigation matters, helping to fill a critical need in legal services delivery for poor and marginalized communities in Connecticut.

LSO seeks to hire 20-25 Summer Fellows to work with clinical faculty in order to continue this client representation. These are paid positions, with a salary of $6,720 for 12 weeks of full-time work ($14/hour). The Fellowship will run from May 19 to August 28, with some flexibility as to start and end dates. Part-time work or full-time work for a portion of the Fellowship period may also be possible.

Summer Fellows can expect to have a range of challenging and rewarding lawyering experiences during the course of their time at LSO, including client interviewing and counseling; factual development of cases; researching and writing legal memoranda; drafting of contracts and other legal instruments; interacting with opposing counsel, government actors, and community stakeholders; and negotiation and alternative dispute resolution.

In several of the clinics, students will make court appearances to argue motions or present evidence. Fellows will work under the direct supervision of clinical faculty members and supervising attorneys, and will have significant responsibility for each case or project on which they work. In addition, faculty members will host a weekly series of presentations and discussions for the Fellows on the work of the clinics, public interest lawyering, and other topics of interest.

LSO clinics perform a wide range of exciting work, including litigation in state and federal court and before administrative agencies, transactional work on behalf of community organizations, and policy and legislative advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. For 2015, LSO seeks Summer Fellows for the following clinics:

  • Sol and Lillian Goldman Family Advocacy for Children and Youth Clinic
  • Ludwig Community and Economic Development Clinic
  • Criminal Justice Clinic
  • Immigration Legal Services
  • Landlord Tenant Legal Services
  • Legal Services for Immigrant Communities
  • Mortgage Foreclosure Litigation
  • Veterans Legal Services Clinic
  • Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic

Students who are eligible for summer funding from their own sources and who need an early decision on their LSO application to qualify for outside support are encouraged to advise LSO of their situation and to request expedited review of their candidacy.

Interested students should email a cover letter specifying the clinic(s) in which they have an interest, a resume, writing sample, transcript, and contact information for two references via email. (Transcripts, if not available, can be sent after the initial application.) The final deadline to submit application materials is February 15, 2015. Early applications are encouraged.

Announcing an Animal Law Writing Contest for Law Students

The American Veterinary Medical Association, American Kennel Club, Cat Fanciers’ Association and Animal Health Institute offer law students an opportunity to engage in a scholarly discussion and debate of legal issues related to animals and animal law. The Grand Prize winner receives a $2500 cash prize plus round-trip airfare, one night accommodation and ground transportation to the American Veterinary Medical Law Association’s Annual Meeting in Boston, MA in July 2015.

Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled at an ABA-Accredited law school in the United States.
  • Must submit cover sheet and certification form along with an in-depth analysis of one of the selected animal law topics.

Papers must be submitted no later than Noon CST on February 15, 2015 in order to be accepted.

The 2014-2015 Louis Jackson National Student Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law

The 2014-2015 Louis Jackson National Student Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law (co-sponsored by the Institute for Law and the Workplace and the Jackson Lewis Firm)

Topic:  Papers may address any topic relating to the law governing the workplace, such as employment law, labor law, employee benefits, or employment discrimination.  Only the first two submissions per law school will be accepted as entries for consideration. Submissions must be the law student author’s own work and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors must have completed or be currently taking course work in employment or labor law, and must be enrolled in an accredited law school during the Fall 2014 semester. There are formatting guidelines that must be followed. For questions, contact Professor Martin H. Malin, by email.

Prizes:  One top honors award of $3,000 and two $1,000 awards will be presented to the top three entries.  In addition to the cash awards, the top three entries will be published on the Institute for Law and the Workplace website. (Electronic versions of winning papers will be required).

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law Annual Law Student Writing Competition for 2014-2015

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law are pleased to announce their 2014-2015 writing competition. This competition is open to articles written while the author is a student at an accredited law school in the United States. Authors may not have graduated from law school prior to December 1, 2014. Graduate students in law school (LL.M. candidates) are not eligible.

Entries may address any aspect of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar. Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine. Articles may address U.S. law, international law of relevance to U.S. labor and employment attorneys, or how a legal topic is treated in states across the country, but papers limited to the law of a single state will not be considered.Papers must be analytical in nature, not merely a summary of the law. Students must present and discuss competing points of view with respect to the issue presented and must distinguish their conclusions from opposing positions with sound logic and reference to multiple sources. Entries will be evaluated on topic selection, analysis, quality of research, grammar, spelling, usage and syntax, clarity, structure, overall appearance, and relevance to the practicing labor and employment law bar.

The following prizes may be awarded by the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers: First Place:$1500, Second Place: $1000, Third Place: $500. The first-place winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law, and its author will be a guest at the annual CLE program of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law and honored at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The College and the Section reserve the right not to select any article for publication or award any prizes if, in their judgment, the submissions do not meet their standards for publication.

To be considered, articles must be submitted by midnight(EDST) on May 15, 2015, via email using the subject line “Writing Competition.” The manuscript should be submitted as attachments in both Microsoft Word and PDF documents. The text should be Times New Roman font, 12 point pitch, double-spaced and the footnotes single-spaced with double-spacing between footnotes on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper with one-inch margins on all sides. The manuscript, exclusive of the cover page, may not exceed twenty pages. All citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (19th Edition). Do not submit endnotes, a table of contents or table of cases. A separate cover page must also be submitted which includes the paper’s title, author’s name, law school, graduation date, e-mail, street address and telephone number. Although personal information should not appear on the manuscript itself, the title should be clearly visible on at least the first page. Manuscripts must be the original work of a single author, may not have been written for paid employment, and may not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.
