American College of Employee Benefits Counsel 13th Annual Employee Benefits Writing Contest:

Thursday, June 1, 2017 – 8:00am

The American College of Employee Benefits Counsel is is pleased to announce the Thirteenth Annual Employee Benefits Writing Prize.

SUBJECT:     Any topic in the field of employee benefits law.

OPEN TO:     Any J.D. and graduate (LL.M. or S.J.D.) law students enrolled at any time between August 15, 2016 and August 15, 2017.

SUBMIT BY:     June 1, 2017

UP TO TWO PRIZES:     $1,500 each. Winners will be honored during the College’s annual black tie dinner on October 14, 2017 in San Francisco, CA.  They will receive a plaque and an employee benefits treatise published by Bloomberg BNA Books. The winning papers will also be distributed to the Fellows of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, experienced attorneys who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the employee benefits field in a wide range of practice settings including law and consulting firms, universities, labor unions, advocacy organizations and government agencies throughout the United States.  The College will also use its best efforts to have one or more of the winning papers published in the Benefits Law Journal or another professional or scholarly publication, if deemed suitable by the College’s Writing Prize Committee and the editors of the publication.

2017 Fitch Law Scholarship Essay Contest

Ohio attorney John Fitch of The Fitch Law Firm LLC is a victims’ rights advocate. His work includes representation of victims of sexual abuse.  Mr. Fitch is also dedicated to promoting the education of the public with respect to issues pertaining to personal injury and sexual abuse law in order to promote safety and increased awareness of risks that exist to the general public.

With these principles in mind, The Fitch Law Firm is honored to offer a one-time, non-renewable scholarship of $2,500.00 to one college student who wins The Fitch Law Firm 2017 Scholarship Essay Contest.

Per Equal Justice Works (EJW), certain Miami-area organizations are still seeking interns for the summer.  Students who intern would be eligible to receive an educational award of $1,230 for three hundred hours of service.

In addition, students who have already secured public interest internships this summer can also apply for this award.  More information is available online and on the EJW Americorps JD website.

Out-Of-State Summer Housing Options in Washington, D.C.

Georgetown Law is offering short-term summer housing specifically for law students in Washington, D.C. The Gewirz Student Center offers apartment style living in the heart of Washington, D.C. Summer associates, interns and students enjoy the privacy of individual bedrooms, while sharing full kitchens and bathrooms with one to two other residents.

Summer residents are automatically members of GULC’s state-of-the-art Sport and Fitness Center.  Rates are listed under the ‘Room Rates’ tab on the website. Cable, wireless internet, electricity, water, and trash removal are included in the rates.

Summer Housing will be available from June 3rd through August 5th, 2017.

2017 Alford Excellence Award Scholarship Application: Deadline April 18, 2017

On May 11, 2017, the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section (“MJL Section”) of the Delaware State Bar Association will hold its annual Judge Haile L. Alford Memorial Breakfast. The event is held in honor of Haile L. Alford, the first African-American female judge in the State of Delaware. Judge Alford was appointed by Governor Mike Castle in 1992 and served on the bench until her untimely death in 2003 at the age of 54.

During the Alford Memorial Breakfast, the MJL Section intends to grant the 201 7 Alford Excellence Award, a $3,000 scholarship, to at least three future practitioners who will sit for the July 2017 Delaware Bar Examination.

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law Annual Law Student Writing Competition for 2016-2017

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law are pleased to announce their 2016-2017 writing competition.  This competition is open to articles written while the author is a student at an accredited law school in the United States.  Authors may not have graduated from law school prior to December 1, 2016.  Graduate students in law school (LL.M. candidates) are not eligible.

Entries should address aspects of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar.  Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine.  Articles may address U.S. law, international law of relevance to U.S. labor and employment attorneys, or how a legal topic is treated in states across the country.

Papers limited to the law of a single state will not be considered.  Papers must be analytical in nature, not merely a summary of the law.  Students must present and discuss competing points of view with respect to the issue addressed and must distinguish their conclusions from opposing positions with sound logic and reference to multiple primary and secondary sources.  We discourage students from writing articles about recent a Supreme Court decision or a case pending before the Supreme Court unless the article focuses upon case law or statutory developments subsequent to the Supreme Court’s decision.

The following prizes may be awarded by the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers:  First Place:  $3000, Second Place:  $1000, Third Place:  $500.  The first-place winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law.  In addition, the author will be a guest at the annual CLE program of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law and honored at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.  The College and the Section reserve the right not to select any article for publication or award any prizes if, in their judgment, the submissions do not meet their standards for outstanding legal writing.

Submission deadline is June 15, 2017.
