The Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington) Invites Applications for Assistant Dean for Admissions

The Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington) invites applications for the position of assistant dean for admissions. The assistant dean for admissions will be responsible for recruiting and enrolling a class of approximately 200 first-year JD students who match the school’s criteria for academic excellence, diversity, and career potential, while also having a key understanding of quantitative metrics and other related implications.  Key duties and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • Develop and lead the execution of annual recruiting plans that take into account the school’s financial needs and criteria for academic excellence and diversity, including median LSAT and GPA targets. Incorporate demographic and psychographic data that drive prospects’ selection decisions and incorporate them into the school’s recruiting strategies;
  • Work closely with law school colleagues to leverage relationships with constituent groups (alumni, faculty, students, staff) that will help recruit and enroll students;
  • Develop metrics and tracking mechanisms for measuring and predicting progress toward attaining goals throughout the recruiting season;
  • Meet weekly with the admissions staff to work with them on achieving their enrollment and operational goals;
  • Represent the law school at on-campus and off-campus events aimed at attracting prospective students; coordinate faculty, alumni, and staff attendance at those events as appropriate;
  • Ensure compliance with all LSAC, ABA, and Indiana University rules and regulations concerning recruiting and admission of prospective students;
  • Value diversity in the recruitment of incoming classes;
  • Perform other related duties and tasks related to the work described.

This position plays a pivotal role in the school’s success because it requires the incumbent to balance the school’s criteria for academic excellence with available amounts of scholarship funds that can be used to attract the best and brightest students. As such, the incumbent must be skilled at leveraging all available human and financial resources to the benefit of both the prospect and school.

The incumbent will be joining the law school at a crucial time in student recruiting. The new dean of admissions must have a demonstrated record of transforming old models into proven success. Specific experience in admissions is not necessary if the incumbent can show success in building and executing on a model for attracting human talent in a financially responsible manner. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD, MBA, or other graduate degree preferred.
  • Five years’ experience preferred in any of the following: higher-education recruiting; development; executive recruiting; major account sales management; or entrepreneurial ventures in a similar field.
  • Ability and willingness to test new methods for achieving goals and measuring them against specific metrics.
  • Ability to manage professional and clerical staff and work effectively with peers and outside volunteer constituents.
  • Thorough understanding of technical, legal, and regulatory requirements surrounding enrollment management of higher education.

The position supervises a full-time staff of four and about 15 student workers. Significant travel and evening hours are required.
