Equal Justice Works Seeks Director, Law School Engagement & Advocacy Unit

Recognizing the vital role law schools and law students play in the public interest law movement and the challenges they will confront, the Law School Engagement & Advocacy unit focuses on:

  • Creating compelling public interest programs for students that instill public service values; and
  • Breaking down the educational debt barriers that prevent many graduates from going into public interest work after graduation.

Working with administrators, faculty and students at 198 member law schools, this unit works to:

  • Increase awareness of Equal Justice Works programs;
  • Advocate for law schools to adopt programs and practices that support students’ pursuit of public service; and
  • Expose all students to the rewards of public service.

The Director also will launch a new Student Engagement Initiative to more directly connect with thousands of law students and law student leaders who want to devote themselves to public service opportunities and careers.

Also within this unit is the Educational Debt Relief program, which advocates for law school loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs), and provides expertise on managing student debt to law students, law schools and public interest lawyers.

In addition, the unit runs the largest annual national legal Conference and Career Fair with more than 1,200 students and 120 employers attending.

This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic and creative leader with management experience, an understanding of how to organize effectively in the law school environment, a passion for transforming and improving legal education and diplomatically advocating for change, the vision to create programs that will inspire law students, the skills to build on our advocacy program for debt relief, and the storytelling and fundraising skills to identify funders for this effort.

The Director is a member of the Equal Justice Works management team and oversees the unit’s four-person staff, works with other units within the organization, and creates and manages annual work plans and budgets.  The Director reports to a Chief Operating Officer who in turn reports to the Executive Director.  The Director interacts with law schools and works closely with the National Advisory Committee which consists of students and law school professions.
