{"id":5791,"date":"2013-09-10T15:35:26","date_gmt":"2013-09-10T18:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=5791"},"modified":"2013-09-10T15:35:26","modified_gmt":"2013-09-10T18:35:26","slug":"american-indian-law-review-2013-2014-writing-competition-rules-deadline-is-january-31-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=5791","title":{"rendered":"American Indian Law Review 2013-2014 Writing Competition Rules &#8211; Deadline is January 31, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The American Indian Law Review (AILT)\u00a0is pleased to announce its annual writing competition for 2013-2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Topics<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Papers will be accepted on any issue concerning American Indian law or indigenous peoples. \u00a0However, topics recently published in the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em> will not be favored.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Eligibility<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The competition is open to students enrolled in J.D. or graduate law programs at accredited law schools in the United States and Canada <strong><em>as of the competition deadline of Jan. 31, 2014<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0Editors of the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em> are not eligible to compete.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Awards<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first place winner receives $1,000 and publication in the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em>, an official periodical of the University of Oklahoma College of Law with international distribution. \u00a0The second place winner receives $500, and third place receives $250.<\/p>\n<p>The three winning authors will be recognized on the masthead of the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em>, and will receive copies of <em>Felix S. Cohen&#8217;s Handbook of Federal Indian Law<\/em>, provided by LexisNexis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Deadline<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All electronic entries must be received no later than <strong><em>6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 31, 2014<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0Any hardcopy entries must be postmarked by that date. \u00a0Entries will be acknowledged upon receipt. \u00a0All entries become the property of the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Judges<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Papers will be judged by members of the legal profession with an interest in American Indian Law and by the editors of the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Standards<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Papers will be judged on the basis of originality and timeliness of topic, knowledge and use of applicable legal principles, proper and articulate analysis of the issues, use of authorities and extent of research, logic and reasoning in analysis, ingenuity and ability to argue by analogy, clarity and organization, correctness of format and citations, grammar and writing style, and strength and logic of conclusions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Form<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Entries must be a minimum of 20 double-spaced pages in length and a maximum of 50 double-spaced pages in length excluding footnotes or endnotes. \u00a0All citations should conform to <em>The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation<\/em> (19th ed.). \u00a0The body of the email must contain the author&#8217;s name, social security number, school, expected year of graduation, current address, permanent address, and email address. \u00a0Inquiries may be replied to by email. No identifying marks (name, school, etc.) should appear on the paper itself. \u00a0All entries must have only one author. Entries must be unpublished, not currently submitted for publication elsewhere, and not currently entered in other writing competitions. Papers entered in the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em> writing competition may not be submitted for consideration to any other publication until such time as winning entrants are announced. \u00a0Any entries not fully in accord with required form will be ineligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Submission<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Submissions may be <a title=\"link\" href=\"mailto:mwaters@ou.edu\" target=\"_blank\">emailed<\/a> to the <em>American Indian Law Review<\/em>\u00a0by the competition deadline. \u00a0Entries may be sent as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or PDF documents. \u00a0Although email submissions are preferred, hardcopies are acceptable. \u00a0If submitting hardcopies, mail them to AILR Writing Competition, American Indian Law Review, 300 Timberdell Road, Norman, OK 73019.
