{"id":4279,"date":"2012-09-23T17:41:25","date_gmt":"2012-09-23T20:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=4279"},"modified":"2012-09-23T17:41:25","modified_gmt":"2012-09-23T20:41:25","slug":"the-jacob-burns-community-legal-clinics-of-the-george-washington-university-law-school-announce-graduate-clinical-fellowships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=4279","title":{"rendered":"The Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics of The George Washington University Law School Announce Graduate Clinical Fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics of The George Washington University Law School announce the availability of new graduate\u00a0 clinical fellowships for the academic years of 2013-15.\u00a0 In\u00a0 recognition of the generous gift of Philip Friedman, the Fellows are\u00a0 known as Friedman Fellows.\u00a0 Friedman Fellows obtain LL.M. degrees\u00a0 while examining and engaging in clinical legal education and public\u00a0 interest law.<\/p>\n<p>The 2013-15 Friedman Fellowships begin in the summer of 2013.\u00a0 Each\u00a0 fellowship is affiliated with a specific law school clinic.\u00a0 Although\u00a0 the various clinics provide the fellows diverse responsibilities and\u00a0 experiences, each provides the Fellow with opportunities to co-teach\u00a0 and co-supervise, alongside experienced clinical faculty, the law\u00a0 students enrolled in the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The Friedman Fellowship program enables every Fellow to learn about\u00a0 clinical education and public interest lawyering through the practice\u00a0 of engaging in each, teaching and supervising law students engaged in\u00a0 these endeavors, and participating in a program of study in which\u00a0 these are the primary topics of inquiry.\u00a0 In the process, Fellows\u00a0 receive mentorship and support from the clinical faculty and\u00a0 administration, and the law school in general.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows enroll in two year-long courses in Clinical Teaching and\u00a0 Scholarship taught by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and\u00a0 other clinical faculty.\u00a0 As part of this course sequence, Fellows\u00a0 receive specific instruction and guidance in teaching and supervising\u00a0 law students, and in writing a publishable thesis.\u00a0 Fellows also\u00a0 enroll part-time in other law school classes, and receive an LL.M.\u00a0degree upon completion of the class and thesis requirements of the\u00a0 LL.M. program.<\/p>\n<p>The Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics of The George Washington University Law School are currently seeking applications from candidates with strong\u00a0 academic, clinical and lawyering experience.\u00a0They are especially\u00a0 interested in applications from lawyers with background and experience\u00a0 in the following areas: appellate advocacy, administrative advocacy,\u00a0 criminal defense, post-conviction re-entry, housing law, family law, domestic violence,\u00a0 public benefits, employment law, civil litigation, transactional law and\u00a0 community economic development law.\u00a0 Fellows receive an annual stipend\u00a0 between $45,000 and $50,000, tuition remission for the LL.M. program,\u00a0 health insurance and other benefits and possible student loan\u00a0 deferment.\u00a0 Fellows must be members of a state bar.\u00a0 Candidates who\u00a0 are not members of the D.C. Bar must be eligible for immediate waiver\u00a0 into the D.C.
