{"id":2055,"date":"2011-08-03T17:51:20","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T20:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=2055"},"modified":"2011-08-18T17:25:52","modified_gmt":"2011-08-18T20:25:52","slug":"department-of-homeland-security-general-counsels-summer-law-intern-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cdo.law.miami.edu\/?p=2055","title":{"rendered":"Department of Homeland Security General Counsel&#8217;s Summer Law Intern Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About the Summer Law Intern Program<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Summer Law Intern Program is a competitive program for compensated positions in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at Department of Homeland Security (DHS) headquarters located in Washington D.C. \u00a0Summer Law Interns may expect to be assigned positions which offer both valuable experience and substantial individual responsibility.\u00a0 Successful candidates will be afforded the opportunity to work in the different legal divisions within OGC headquarters, including Immigration, Regulatory Affairs, Operations and Enforcement, Legal Counsel, General Law, Technology Programs, National Protection and Programs, and Intelligence. \u00a0They may interact with clients, attend legislative hearings, and meet with attorneys and representatives from other agencies over the course of the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Law Intern Program also includes an extensive orientation on the operating divisions of DHS and the federal government in Washington D.C., including visits to the U.S. Coast Guard Washington Air Station, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Forensic Document Laboratory, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspections facility at Dulles International Airport. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Eligibility:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only U.S. citizens are eligible for employment in DHS\u2019s Summer Legal Intern Program.<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Law Intern Program is open to second-year law students, as well as third-year law students in four-year programs. \u00a0DHS OGC also will consider eligible first-year law students starting December 1, 2011, contingent upon available vacancies.<\/p>\n<p>DHS selects candidates based on multiple factors including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or higher or Top 1\/3 of the class preferred);<\/li>\n<li>Exceptional research, writing and analytical skills; and<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated involvement in activities beyond required coursework is encouraged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application Process and Deadlines:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0Interested 2Ls (or 3Ls in four-year programs) should submit a <strong>cover letter, resume, references, and a transcript <\/strong>(unofficial is acceptable) to <strong><a href=\"mailto:OGCStaffing@dhs.gov\">OGCStaffing@dhs.gov<\/a> <\/strong>starting <strong>August 15, 2011.\u00a0 <\/strong>The application period closes on <strong>October 1, 2011. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0OGC may also consider applications from ILs depending upon remaining vacancies.\u00a0 Interested 1Ls are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> eligible to apply until <strong>December 1, 2011<\/strong>.\u00a0 The application period for 1Ls will close on <strong>December 16, 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OGC will make its hiring decisions between December 2011 and January 2012 for 2L and 3L candidates;
