This year, the ABA Property Insurance Law Committee is holding its annual Spring CLE meeting on May 16-18, at the PGA National Resort & Spa, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This spring’s meeting will be co-sponsored with the ABA trial techniques committee. The topic of the presentations this year will be “Exclusions And Extensions Of Coverage Under The ALL-Risk Property Policy.”
In addition, the Committee will be including an “Insurance 101” program on the Thursday afternoon of the meeting, which will provide a broad overview of property law insurance specifically geared to new claim professionals and attorneys. Topics of presentation will range from burdens of proof to the intricacies of water damage, cyber coverages and collapse provisions.

Sterling is holding a ‘Fundamentals of Workers’ Compensation’ seminar in Tampa, Florida on May 10, 2013 and they would like to offer 5 law students free scholarship-passes to this seminar. The students get a day-long overview of a particular aspect of the law, a seminar manual and an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys.

The City of Chicago’s Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel in its Appeals Division. The Appeals Division handles all appellate matters for the City and appears in the Illinois Appellate Court, Illinois Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. Attorneys in this Division are responsible for briefing and, with rare exceptions, arguing their own cases.
Typical staffing for a case on appeal is one Assistant Corporation Counsel, as well as the Deputy and Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel. Division attorneys also provide advice to the trial divisions on appellate issues and, at times, on legal issues on which the Division has considerable experience. Attorneys generally do not specialize in a particular subject matter but handle the full range of appellate issues, including labor and employment, torts, civil rights, tax and revenue, regulation, issues arising under ordinances and statutes, and other cases involving city government and programs.

Law students (an individual or co-authors), currently enrolled as a J.D. or LL.M. candidates in an ABA-accredited law school within the United States or its possessions, are invited to submit an original, previously unpublished work that relates to an issue within one or more of the following topics in the area of trusts and estates:
1st Place: $ 5,000 and publication in ACTEC Law Journal.
2nd Place: $ 3,000 publication at www.actec.org and possible publication in ACTEC Law Journal.
3rd Place: $ 1,000 publication at www.actec.org and possible publication in ACTEC Law Journal.
Papers will be judged anonymously by a panel appointed by ACTEC’s Legal Education Committee.

Note that the April 2nd training is by the library (and will cover a variety of sources), while the other trainings are conducted by the law school’s Lexis and Westlaw representatives. At the April 4th Lexis training, Lexis representatives will discuss cost effective techniques and pricing in a law firm setting.

Wednesday, March 27th, Pro Bono Clinic for Nonprofits, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., CDO: Miami area transactional attorneys are coming together to provide free legal consultations to South Florida nonprofit organizations. Legal issues may touch upon contract, employment, corporate, intellectual property and real estate law. Students have the opportunity to shadow participating attorneys during the consultations. Wednesday, April 10th, HOPE Fellows: The Future of Marriage Equality, 12:30-1:50 p.m., Room F-309, Please join current HOPE Fellows in an event conducted by constitutional law scholar Caroline Mala Corbin, who will be lecturing about the two upcoming marriage equality cases before the Supreme Court. The Florida Bar Association Environmental and Law Use Law Section’s Summer Fellowship opportunity. A $5,000 stipend is available for this program, designed to encourage law students to study and pursue careers in public interest environmental law.
The James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, is hiring a Fellow for its Bacon Immigration Law and Policy Program to begin in August 2013. The position is open to recent law graduates with up to three years of practice experience. 3Ls with relevant experience and qualifications will also be considered. The U.D.C. David A. Clarke School of Law is pleased to announce fellowship opportunities in its Juvenile & Special Education Law Clinic for At-Risk Youth, and its Housing and Consumer Law Clinic. The Florida Justice Institute (FJI), a nonprofit, public interest litigation firm, is seeking a law student to intern for the summer months. FJI conducts civil rights litigation primarily on behalf of those incarcerated in Florida’s prisons and jails.
