As a Field Counsel you will represent the company and its policyholders in civil litigation and workers’ compensation matters involving claims for money damages or compensation for personal injury or property damage of a moderate value with moderately complex legal issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Use Litigation Protocols to develop and revise appropriate legal strategy for discovery, investigation, handling and trial/hearing of cases or matters
  • Conduct necessary and appropriate discovery, hearings, trials, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations and similar proceedings.
  • Research the law applicable to cases or matters; drafts legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs and opinions as required. If requested, conduct settlement negotiations.
  • Advise, communicate and confer with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients, rendering clear, unambiguous legal opinions and advice. Personally meet with, and maintain good relations and communications with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients as required.
  • Remain current with developments in the law; understand medical, scientific, construction, products, engineering or similar issues and defenses involved with cases or matters.
  • Prepare and conduct training sessions for Legal, Claims or other departments as required.
  • Provide daily direction and guidance to junior attorneys.
  • Understand and creatively use technology; apply technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost.
  • Act as a team or group leader for an assigned group within the office.
  • Interface with Home Office Legal department.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of law school with LLB or JD and admission to the bar.
  • Special license to practice before a particular board or federal court may be necessary.
  • A minimum of 1 successful year experience as an attorney.
  • A general knowledge of insurance law and specific understanding of the operations and requirements of insured clients, customers and the company.
  • The ability to effectively communicate and persuade by written or spoken word is critical.
  • Experience and ability appropriate to the level of cases or matters handled.

Southeastern Intellectual Property Job Fair (SIPJF): Registration is Open Now through May 17

Georgia State University College of Law is hosting the 9th Annual Southeastern Intellectual Property Job Fair (SIPJF) on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia. This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in intellectual property law.  Students will be able to interview for positions in various areas of IP, including patent, trademark, trade secrets, and copyright law.

To register for SIPJF, please complete the following steps:

(1)  Review the Employer List in the SIPJF 2013 Full Packet to determine if you are qualified and interested in participating in the job fair.  Please note that two employers are seeking May 2013 graduates.

(2)  Review the Student Instructions and complete the Participation Form. The Participation Form must be submitted to Karen Warren in the CDO on or before 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 17th.  UM Law will pay your registration fee.

(3)  Starting Friday, May 24th  – Friday June 7th, registered candidates will be able to use SIPJF’s Symplicity to upload application materials and bid on employers.  Students will receive further instructions by email on or before May 24th.

CRR seeks a Legal Adviser for the Europe (50%) and Global Advocacy (50%) Programs.  The position will be based in Geneva.

Responsibilities:

The Legal Adviser will work under the supervision of the Director for Europe and the Director for Global Advocacy, and will work closely with Europe and Global Advocacy Legal/Advocacy Advisers and Fellows, as well as liaise with Center staff for other regions.

Duration of Position: The position is full-time, beginning in August 2013.

The Florida House of Representatives is Accepting Applications for the 2013-2014 Legislative Intern Program

The Florida House of Representatives is accepting applications for the 2013-14 Legislative Intern Program. The forms and directions to apply for the Intern Program are in the CDO and on the House website. The application deadline is May 31, 2013.

The Legislative Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for college graduates and graduate students to gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative process and to participate in the work of the legislative branch of state government. Program participants are assigned to House committees, subcommittees and leadership offices. Under the guidance of senior House staff, their assignments may include research projects, bill drafting and analysis, oversight activities and other tasks relating to budget and policy areas.

The 2013-14 Intern Program begins on October 4, 2013 and ends on May 23, 2014. Legislative Interns are paid $13.00 per hour. From October 4 through December 31, 2013, participants work 20 hours per week. From January 2 through May 23, 2014, participants work 30 hours per week to assist with the increased workload. Interns may choose to receive up to 18 hours of graduate tuition at Florida in-state rates during the time of the internship (Fall ’13 and Spring/Summer ’14) or receive a monthly stipend of $400 from October 4 through December 31, 2013, and $500 from January 2 through May 23, 2014.

To be eligible for the Intern Program, the applicant must be a Florida resident or be enrolled in a Florida school at the time of application. Applicants must have received their bachelor’s degree prior to beginning the internship.

The Miami-Dade County Commission on Ethics & Public Trust Presents Public Corruption Investigation Conference – Special Student Rate

The Public Corruption Investigation Conference is a two-day event for investigators, auditors, compliance officers and prosecutors in  criminal justice, government and financial organizations on techniques and practices unique to public integrity investigations, presented jointly by the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust and the City of Miami Police Department Training Center.

The Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust is offering a Special Student Rate for a limited number of students to attend its upcoming Public Corruption Investigation Conference on May 9-10, 2013.

The Conference will be held at the City of Miami Police Department Training Center, located in downtown Miami, at 350 N.W. 2nd Avenue. The Conference program offers a unusual array of lectures and panels on topics such as Money Laundering, Bribery, RICO, Financial Fraud, Environmental Offenses, Media Investigations, Investigative Technology and others of interest to law enforcement personnel and others involved in public integrity investigations.

The array of speakers includes present and former federal and state prosecutors and investigators, as well as former FBI Director Louis Freeh as keynote speaker. There are over 120 law enforcement officials already registered for the conference, which is being opened on a very limited basis to students at the reduced price of $50 for the entire conference (Reg. Price $199), including breakfast and lunch on both days. Women in International Law Interest Group Seeks Mentors and Mentees!

The American Society of International Law (ASIL) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational membership organization founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950. ASIL has a number of interest groups, one of which is the Women in International Law Interest Group (WILIG). WILIG is now launching a mentoring program, matching female law students or new attorneys interested in professional development in the international law field with experienced female international lawyers. This mentoring program is the first of its kind in the international law arena and is designed to foster a new generation of female international lawyers.

The mentoring program runs from Fall 2013 through Spring 2014, and applications are being accepted through July 1, 2013. Mentoring takes place locally, in a group setting, with a maximum of four mentees for every mentor. Mentors and mentees meet in person several times during the course of an academic year to discuss topics and engage in activities designed to help junior women enter and be successful in international law. Mentors will be provided with pre-planned meeting topics to structure meetings for their groups. Upon finishing the requirements of the one-year program, all participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Women Lawyers of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit: A Historical Perspective

The program will explore the history of civil rights, ethics and professionalism affecting women lawyers in litigation and leadership. 2013 New York State Bar Association Committee on Animals and the Law Student Writing Competition

Eligibility:

The submission must be written by a student currently enrolled (full-time or part-time) in an ABA accredited law school. Students expecting to receive their degrees in 2013 are eligible for consideration. The  submission must be written by one, and only one, student, i.e., papers jointly written by more than one student or that have been subjected to line editing by professors or advisors shall not be considered. No paper that has been previously published in any form shall be considered.

Deadline:

Papers must be postmarked no later than July 1, 2013.

Award Criteria:

Written submissions will be judged based on equality, clarity, originality and organization. All essays must also meet the following criteria:

Length: Type written, double spaced, no less than 12 point Times New Roman font, on 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch paper, with 1 inch margins, and no more than 25 pages, including footnotes. Footnotes should be single spaced, and no less than 10 point font.

Format: One hard copy of the written submission and one electronic copy in Microsoft Word format on a disk or CD must be submitted by mail, postmarked no later than July 1, 2013, and addressed to:

Women and Justice Fellowship-Avon Global Center for Women and Justice-Cornell University

The Avon Global Center for Women & Justice at Cornell Law School is seeking applications for the 2013-14 Women and Justice Fellowship.  The Fellow will play an integral role in executing and further developing the Center’s initiatives.

The Center works with judges, legal practitioners, civil society advocates and other stakeholders in an effort to end gender-based violence.  The Center’s initiatives focus on advancing access to justice and the international rule of law, with an emphasis on defending the human rights of women and girls.  For more information, please visit the Avon Global Center for Women & Justice website.

This one-year fellowship offers varied experience in the areas of international human rights and gender justice, including legal research and project management.  In addition to working with the Center team, the Fellow will interact with students, faculty, judges and advocates from diverse countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Cornell Law School provides an intellectually engaging work atmosphere, located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Fellow responsibilities will include:

– researching and drafting memoranda in response to requests by judges for legal research assistance;

– acting as content editor and strategist for Center publicity, including website and social media networks;

– furthering the development of the Center’s online legal resources collection, including research and analysis of case law from the US and other countries, as well as scholarly articles and reports;

– assisting with planning and managing Center programs, events, and outreach initiatives, such as the annual Women & Justice Conference;

– conducting original research for Center-produced publications; and

– providing ad-hoc support for clinical projects.

Qualifications/Requirements:

– J.D. or LL.M.

– Strong research, writing, and editing skills

– Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

– Ability to manage a diverse range of projects and initiatives

– Demonstrates interest in international human rights, comparative law, and/or gender justice issues

At least two years of professional work experience preferred.  Experience in international legal research and in website and/or database management is helpful.

Start date:  August 2013.
