Need to Find Summer Housing or Sublet Your Apartment?

As you figure out your summer plans, you may find that you need housing in other parts of the United States and/or need to sublet your Miami apartment. The NALP Apartment Exchange is a site allowing students to search for summer housing and/or post available housing. Free registration is required. The NALP Apartment Exchange will be available starting in February.

In addition, students from other law schools contact UM law to advertise their housing needs. One current request:

A 2L at Indiana University School of Law would like to sublet a furnished studio or one bedroom apartment from May 25th to July 31st, preferably near downtown Miami. To obtain contact information for this student, please email the CDO.

  1. “Review your lease – unless your lease specifically states that you are obligated to locate and secure a new tenant, you are not obligated to do this. Is your roommate moving out too? If you are on a separate lease from your roommate – then no you shouldn’t have to locate a new tenant. However, if you and your roommate are both on the lease – you both have to move out OR your roommate needs to negotiate a new lease with the landlord and locate a new roommate. Since you have provided your landlord 30 days notice (written is the way to do this), continue with your move. Make sure to advise your landlord once you’ve vacated the property – and make sure if your roommate is keeping the place they arrange for a new lease with new terms.”

It’s so important to follow all the steps you mentioned if you are going to get summer housing with the least amount of hassle.

This is much better than using craigslist, I’ve had a horrible time finding an affordable house there and would much rather do an ‘exchange’ with fellow law students that have to live with a random stranger. Thanks for this resource!

It is so hard to find a place just for a few months, seems like everywhere I look wants me to sign a 6 month lease, minimum. And if I don’t then it’s good bye security deposit. This is a couple years old but I’ll check it out, hopefully can find a place for the summer.

  6. I’ve had good luck with craigslist, but you’re right: results can be mixed. Better to room with someone with similar interests.

  7. Thank you for these tips! I will try these tips out!
